The goal of the study was to observe the opinion of the GPs of one of the two Turin Local Health Unit (from now on LHU) and compare them to what emerges from literature. We employed a questionnaire ...administered via phone to all the 389 GPs active in the LHU in October 2013. The percentage of responders was 81.5%. Among the responders, 95% are in favor of acupuncture, 84.2% believe that it is scientifically based, 6% practice acupuncture, 25.2% use it on themselves, and 66.2% have sent at least one patient to an acupuncturist in the last year. 82% of responders are in favour of adding acupuncture training to their own professional practice, and 71.9% believe it would be useful to include acupuncture in specific training for general practice. 64% believe that acupuncture should be included into the benefits offered by the NHS. Data show that interest for acupuncture is higher than that observed in previous international studies carried out on the same topics in the last 20 years; in our opinion, such an increase in confidence and trust in acupuncture is due to the skilled performance offered by the public service in this LHU, which is also guaranteed by a prestigious acupuncture school.
BACKGROUND: Chronic ulcers can benefit from topical treatment with growth factors (GFs). PLT gel provides tissue regeneration‐inducing GFs. The aim of this study was to verify the effectiveness of ...autologous PLT gel in the treatment of nonhealing skin lesions.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: PLT gel was pro‐duced by treating PLTs with autologous thrombin. Two groups of patients were investigated: patients with dehis‐cent sternal wounds and patients with necrotic skin ulcers. Patients treated with PLT gel were retrospectively compared with patients having similar lesions but undergoing conventional treatment. The clinical endpoints of the study were the healing rate, the length of hospital stay, and/or the time required to bring about adequate tissue regeneration in order to undergo reconstructive plastic surgery.
RESULTS: In patients with treated dehiscent sternal wounds the healing rate (3.5 vs. 6.0 wks, p = 0.0002) and hospital stay (31.5 vs. 52.5 days, p < 0.0001) were signi‐ficantly reduced. Patients with treated necrotic skin ulcers required a notably shorter time to have surgery (median 15.0 vs. 35.5 wks, p < 0.0001). Neither adverse reactions nor in‐situ recurrences were observed.
CONCLUSIONS: Patients with chronic unhealing wounds showed substantial improvement when treated with PLT gel lesion dressings.
Tumors have developed several forms of resistance to receptor-induced cell death. Here, we show that malignant mesothelial (MM) cell lines as well as primary MM cells and normal mesothelial (NM) ...cells express Fas and TNF-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) receptors DR4 and DR5. We found that, although Fas expression levels are comparable, only MM cells are resistant to cell death. Furthermore, MM cells show resistance to TRAIL-induced apoptosis. Caspase-8 (FLICE) is not activated by death receptors triggering in malignant cells whereas it is well activated by nonreceptor stimuli, such as UV radiation. We found that FLIP (FLICE-Inhibitory Protein) is constitutively expressed in all MM cell lines and is more expressed in primary MM cells than in NM cells. Knockdown of FLIP expression in MM cell lines, by a FLIPsiRNA, re-established the normal response to apoptosis induced by Fas or DR4/DR5, which was blocked by pretreatment with the caspase-8 inhibitor z-IETD-fmk. These results indicate that MM cells develop an intrinsic resistance to apoptosis induced by death receptors upregulating the expression of the antiapoptotic protein c-FLIP.
