We have evaluated the spread of SARS-CoV-2 through Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) region by means of a correlation between climate and air pollution indicators, namely, average temperature, ...minimum temperature, maximum temperature, rainfall, average relative humidity, wind speed, and air pollution indicators PM10, PM2.5, and NO2 with the COVID-19 daily new cases and deaths. The study focuses in the following LAC cities: Mexico City (Mexico), Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic), San Juan (Puerto Rico), Bogotá (Colombia), Guayaquil (Ecuador), Manaus (Brazil), Lima (Perú), Santiago (Chile), São Paulo (Brazil) and Buenos Aires (Argentina). The results show that average temperature, minimum temperature, and air quality were significantly associated with the spread of COVID-19 in LAC. Additionally, humidity, wind speed and rainfall showed a significant relationship with daily cases, total cases and mortality for various cities. Income inequality and poverty levels were also considered as a variable for qualitative analysis. Our findings suggest that and income inequality and poverty levels in the cities analyzed were related to the spread of COVID-19 positive and negative, respectively. These results might help decision-makers to design future strategies to tackle the spread of COVID-19 in LAC and around the world.

Neuroplastic changes appear in people with visual impairment (VI) and they show greater tactile abilities. Improvements in performance could be associated with the development of enhanced early ...attentional processes based on neuroplasticity. Currently, the various early attentional and cortical remapping strategies that are utilized by people with early (EB) and late-onset blindness (LB) remain unclear. Thus, more research is required to develop effective rehabilitation programs and substitution devices. Our objective was to explore the differences in spatial tactile brain processing in adults with EB, LB and a sighted control group (CG). In this cross-sectional study 27 participants with VI were categorized into EB (n = 14) and LB (n = 13) groups. They were then compared with a CG (n = 15). A vibrotactile device and event-related potentials (ERPs) were utilized while participants performed a spatial tactile line recognition task. The P100 latency and cortical areas of maximal activity were analyzed during the task. The three groups had no statistical differences in P100 latency (p>0.05). All subjects showed significant activation in the right superior frontal areas. Only individuals with VI activated the left superior frontal regions. In EB subjects, a higher activation was found in the mid-frontal and occipital areas. A higher activation of the mid-frontal, anterior cingulate cortex and orbitofrontal zones was observed in LB participants. Compared to the CG, LB individuals showed greater activity in the left orbitofrontal zone, while EB exhibited greater activity in the right superior parietal cortex. The EB had greater activity in the left orbitofrontal region compared to the LB. People with VI may not have faster early attentional processing. EB subjects activate the occipital lobe and right superior parietal cortex during tactile stimulation because of an early lack of visual stimuli and a multimodal information processing. In individuals with LB and EB the orbitofrontal area is activated, suggesting greater emotional processing.

The mountain cryosphere is crucial for socio-economic processes, especially during the dry seasons. However, anthropogenic climate change has had a detrimental impact on the cryosphere due to its ...sensitivity. Over the past two decades, there has been a decline in precipitation and a temperature rise, leading to a substantial reduction in the timing and extent of snow cover. This increase in temperature also elevates the snow line elevation (SLE), further diminishing the volume of available freshwater in the snow-driven basins of the Andes. In this study, we use 22 years (2000–2021) of 8-day snow product (MOD10A2) from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) to analyze the annual and seasonal variability of snow cover area, SLE, and snow persistence (SP, an indicator of the duration of snow) in the Yeso River basin in Central Chile and the correlation of SP and SLE with hydrometeorological variables and climatic indices. We introduce a new approach called the Maximum Dissimilarity Method to obtain the SLE even on cloudy days. The results are as follows: (1) Snow cover area reductions of 34.0 km2 at low elevations in spring and 86.5 km2 at mid elevations in summer were found when comparing the period 2016–2021 to 2000–2004; (2) SP trends at the annual scale revealed a significant decrease in 89% of its area and an average of 3.6 fewer days of snow cover per year; (3) an upward and significant trend of 21 m‧year−1 in the annual SLE was found; and (4) annual SP and SLE were highly correlated with annual hydrometeorological variables, and spring and summer snow variables were significantly correlated with dry streamflow. This methodology can potentially serve as a valuable tool for detecting trends in snow-covered surfaces, and thereby associate these changes with climate change or other anthropogenic effects in future research.
The aim of this work was to analyze the changes in the emissions from the transport sector during the COVID-19 lockdown in Colombia. We compared estimated emissions from road transportation of four ...groups of pollutants, namely, greenhouse gases (CO2, CH4, N2O), ozone precursor gases (CO, NMVOC, NOx), aerosols (BC, PM2.5, PM10), and acidifying gases (NH3, SO2), during the first half of 2020 with values obtained in the same period of 2018. The estimate of emissions from road transportation was determined using a standardized methodology consistent with the 2006 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories and the European Environment Agency/European Monitoring and Evaluation Program. We found a substantial reduction in GHG emissions for CH4, N2O, and CO2 by 17%, 21%, and 28%, respectively. The ozone precursors CO and NMVOC presented a decrease of 21% and 22%, respectively, while NOx emissions were reduced up to 15% for the study period. In addition, BC decreased 15%, and there was a reduction of 17% for both PM10 and PM2.5 emissions. Finally, acidifying gases presented negative variations of 19% for SO2 and 23% for NH3 emissions. Furthermore, these results were consistent with the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) satellite observations and measurements at air quality stations. Our results suggest that the largest decreases were due to the reduction in the burning of gasoline and diesel oil from the transport sector during the COVID-19 lockdown. These results can serve decision makers in adopting strategies to improve air quality related to the analyzed sector.
The endocardial vs. epicardial origin of ventricular arrhythmia (VA) can be inferred from detailed electrocardiogram (ECG) analysis. However, despite its clinical usefulness, ECG has limitations. ...Alternatively, scarred tissue sustaining VAs can be identified by contrast-enhanced cardiac magnetic resonance (ce-CMR). The objective of this study was to determine the clinical value of analysing the presence and distribution pattern of scarred tissue in the ventricles to identify the VA site of origin and the ablation approach required.
A ce-CMR study was carried out before the index ablation procedure in a cohort of 80 patients with non-idiopathic VA. Hyper-enhancement (HE) in each ventricular segment was coded as absent, subendocardial, transmural, mid-myocardial, or epicardial. The endocardial or epicardial VA site of origin was also assigned according to the approach needed for ablation. The clinical VA was successfully ablated in 77 (96.3%) patients, all of them showing HE on ce-CMR. In segments with successful ablation of the clinical ventricular tachycardia, HE was absent in 3 (3.9%) patients, subendocardial in 19 (24.7%), transmural in 36 (46.7%), mid-myocardial in 8 (10.4%), and subepicardial in 11 (14.3%) patients. Epicardial ablation of the index VA was necessary in 3 (6.1%) ischaemic and 12 (42.9%) non-ischaemic patients. The presence of subepicardial HE in the successful ablation segment had 84.6% sensitivity and 100% specificity in predicting an epicardial origin of the VA.
Contrast-enhanced cardiac magnetic resonance is helpful to localize the target ablation substrate of non-idiopathic VA and also to plan the approach needed, especially in non-ischaemic patients.
This work studied the spread of COVID-19, the meteorological conditions and the air quality in a megacity from two viewpoints: (1) the correlation between meteorological and air quality (PM10 and ...NO2) variables with infections and deaths due COVID-19, and (2) the improvement in air quality. Both analyses were performed for the pandemic lockdown due to COVID-19 in the City of Buenos Aires (CABA), the capital and the largest city in Argentina. Daily data from temperature, rainfall, average relative humidity, wind speed, PM10, NO2, new cases and deaths due COVID-19 were analyzed. Our findings showed a significant correlation of meteorological and air quality variables with COVID-19 cases. The highest temperature correlation occurred before the confirmation day of new cases. PM10 presented the highest correlation within 13 to 15 days lag, while NO2 within 3 to 6 days lag. Also, reductions in PM10 and NO2 were observed. This study shows that exposure to air pollution was significantly correlated with an increased risk of becoming infected and dying due to COVID-19. Thus, these results show that the NO2 and PM10 levels in CABA can serve as one of the indicators to assess vulnerability to COVID-19. In addition, decision-makers can use this information to adopt strategies to restrict human mobility during the COVID-19 pandemic and future outbreaks of similar diseases in CABA.
Diabetes is a disease that occurs when the body presents an uncontrolled level of glucose that is capable of damaging the retina, leading to permanent damage of the eyes or vision loss. When diabetes ...affects the eyes, it is known as diabetic retinopathy, which became a global medical problem among elderly people. The fundus oculi technique involves observing the eyeball to diagnose or check the pathology evolution. In this work, we implement a convolutional neural network model to process a fundus oculi image to recognize the eyeball structure and determine the presence of diabetic retinopathy. The model’s parameters are optimized using the transfer-learning methodology for mapping an image with the corresponding label. The model training and testing are performed with a dataset of medical fundus oculi images and a pathology severity scale present in the eyeball as labels. The severity scale separates the images into five classes, from a healthy eyeball to a proliferative diabetic retinopathy presence. The latter is probably a blind patient. Our proposal presented an accuracy of 97.78%, allowing for the confident prediction of diabetic retinopathy in fundus oculi images.
Snow-covered regions are the main source of reflection of incident shortwave radiation on the Earth’s surface. The deposition of light-absorbing particles on these regions increases the capacity of ...snow to absorb radiation and decreases surface snow albedo, which intensifies the radiative forcing, leading to accelerated snowmelt and modifications of the hydrologic cycle. In this work, the changes in surface snow albedo and radiative forcing were investigated, induced by light-absorbing particles in the Upper Aconcagua River Basin (Chilean Central Andes) using remote sensing satellite data (MODIS), in situ spectral snow albedo measurements, and the incident shortwave radiation during the austral winter months (May to August) for the 2004–2016 period. To estimate the changes in snow albedo and radiative forcing, two spectral ranges were defined: (i) an enclosed range between 841 and 876 nm, which isolates the effects of black carbon, an important light-absorbing particle derived from anthropogenic activities, and (ii) a broadband range between 300 and 2500 nm. The results indicate that percent variations in snow albedo in the enclosed range are higher than in the broadband range, regardless of the total amount of radiation received, which may be attributed to the presence of light-absorbing particles, as these particles have a greater impact on surface snow albedo at wavelengths in the enclosed band than in the broadband band.
Aims
Inhibitors of SGLT2 (SGLT2i) have shown a positive impact in patients with chronic heart failure and reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF). Nonetheless, the direct effects of SGLT2i on cardiac cells ...and how their association with main drugs used for HFrEF affect the behaviour and signalling pathways of myocardial fibroblasts are still unknown. We aimed to determine the effects of dapagliflozin alone and in combination with sacubitril/valsartan (LCZ696) or spironolactone on the function of myocardial fibroblasts of patients with heart failure and reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF).
Methods and results
Myocardial fibroblasts isolated from HFrEF patients (n = 5) were treated with dapagliflozin alone (1 nM–1 μM) or combined with LCZ696 (100 nM) or spironolactone (100 nM). The migratory rate was determined by wound‐healing scratch assay. Expression of heart failure (HF) markers and signalling pathways activation were analysed with multiplexed protein array. Commercially available cardiac fibroblasts from healthy donors were used as Control (n = 4). Fibroblasts from HFrEF show higher migratory rate compared with control (P = 0.0036), and increased expression of HF markers fold‐change (Log2): COL1A1–1.3; IL‐1b–1.9; IL‐6–1.7; FN1–2.9 (P < 0.05). Dapagliflozin slowed the migration rate of HFrEF fibroblasts in a dose‐dependent manner and markedly decreased the expression of IL‐1β, IL‐6, MMP3, MMP9, GAL3, and FN1. SGLT2i had no effect on control fibroblasts. These effects were associated with decreased phosphorylation of AKT/GSK3 and PYK2 kinases and the signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT). A combination of dapagliflozin + LCZ696 further decreased fibroblast migration, although it did not have a significant effect on the regulation of signalling pathways and the expression of biomarkers induced by SGLT2 inhibition alone. In contrast, the combination of dapagliflozin + spironolactone did not change the migration rate of fibroblast but significantly altered SGLT2i responses on MMP9, GAL3, and IL‐1b expression, in association with increased phosphorylation of the kinases AKT/GSK3 and ERK1/2.
Conclusions
SGLT2i, LCZ696, and spironolactone modulate the function of isolated myocardial fibroblasts from HFrEF patients through the activation of different signalling pathways. The combination of SGLT2i + LCZ696 shows an additive effect on migration, while spironolactone modifies the signalling pathways activated by SGLT2i and its beneficial effects of biomarkers of heart failure.
This work presents the integration of a gas-phase and particulate atmospheric emission inventory (AEI) for Argentina in high spatial resolution (0.025"x0.025"; approx. 2.5 kmx2.5 km) considering ...monthly variability from 1995 to 2020. The new inventory, called GEAA-AEIv3.0M, includes the following activities: energy production, fugitive emissions from oil and gas production, industrial fuel consumption and production, transport (road, maritime, and air), agriculture, livestock production, manufacturing, residential, commercial, and biomass and agricultural waste burning. The following species, grouped by atmospheric reactivity, are considered: (i) greenhouse gases (GHGs) - CO.sub.2, CH.sub.4, and N.sub.2 O; (ii) ozone precursors - CO, NO.sub.x (NO+NO.sub.2 ), and non-methane volatile organic compounds (NMVOCs); (iii) acidifying gases - NH.sub.3 and SO.sub.2 ; and (iv) particulate matter (PM) - PM.sub.10, PM.sub.2.5, total suspended particles (TSPs), and black carbon (BC). The main objective of the GEAA-AEIv3.0M high-resolution emission inventory is to provide temporally resolved emission maps to support air quality and climate modeling oriented to evaluate pollutant mitigation strategies by local governments. This is of major concern, especially in countries where air quality monitoring networks are scarce, and the development of regional and seasonal emissions inventories would result in remarkable improvements in the time and space chemical prediction achieved by air quality models.
