The present research project has been made mainly with the idea of comparing the tensile strength values and histological answers of three types of colon anastomosis: sutured with silk 5/0; ...polyglycolic acid 5/0; and sutureless anastomosis with human fibrin gum.
One hundred and five (105) Wistar breath rats allocated into 3 groups of 35 animals were used to implement this experimental research project: silk, polyglycolic acid and human fibrin gum. Furthermore, each group was subdivided in 5 series respectively to carry out an experimental study on the tensile strength parameter and anatomic-pathological determinations on the 10th, 20th, 30th, 40th and 50th day after the surgical intervention. The following surgical interventions were practiced on them: A cross section of the colon, followed by: group 1: an end-to-end discontinuous suture anastomosis with Silk; group 2: an end-to-end discontinuous suture anastomosis with polyglycolic acid; group 3: sutureless anastomosis with human fibrin gum. On the 10th, 20th, 30th, 40th and 50th days we proceeded to measure the anastomosis' tensile strength value for each series. We used a tensile strength apparatus and waited until the break down of the suture sample took place and wrote down the value, in g/cm, given by the voltmeter at that moment.
The results obtained indicate that anastomosis made in group 1 (silk) lasted longer to the tensile strength apparatus; followed by those practiced in group 2 (polyglycolic acid); and finally anastomosis carried out in group 3 (human fibrin gum). However in the anastomotic process carried out with the human fibrin gum the healing started from the 10th day. In the same period of time we carried out the following anatomic-pathological determinations: a) sharp inflammation; b) edema; c) non-specific chronic inflammatory infiltrate; d) granulomatous inflammatory infiltrate to foreign bodies; e) fibrosis.
The results show a better answer for anastomosis made with human fibrin gum than those carried out with the two other suture materials. This conclusion is based on the facts that the human fibrin gum used to carry out sutureless anastomosis during this research project generated a lower sharp inflammation and speediness in its absorption; absence of granular reaction to a foreign body; a minor or non-existent edema at all; as well as a good fibrous healing speediness process. Therefore, all these experimental results lead us to conclude that the human fibrin gum used to carry out sutureless anastomosis may be an alternative to the handmade conventional anastomosis. Moreover they are easy to be implemented.

The present study focuses on facts, practices and discourses about the Arbor Day celebrations, from the beginning of the 20 th century to the Seventies, exploring different meanings of this event in different historical moments of the Brazilian society. The city of Belo Horizonte, idealized since its foundation, in 1897, as a “garden city”, is the specific object of this case study.
AIM: To analyze the relationship between smoking and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study of a healthy population, carried out in a check-up unit of a ...university hospital in Mexico City. We enrolled 933 subjects, 368 current smokers (cases) and 565 persons who had never smoked (controls). Demographic, metabolic and biochemical variables were measured in the two groups. NAFLD was determined by ultrasound and metabolic syndrome according to ATPⅢ. RESULTS: A total of 548 men (205 cases and 343 controls) and 337 women (114 cases and 223 controls) were included in the analysis. Statistical differences between cases and controls were observed only in high blood pressure prevalence (6.6% vs 11.3%, P〈0.05; cases and controls respectively), high-density lipoproteins (1.00±0.26 vs 1.06±0.28 mmol/L, P 〈 0.005), triglycerides (2.18±1.49 vs 1.84±1.1 mmol/L, P〈0.001), and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (11.3±9.3 vs 13.5±11.9 mm/h, P〈0.001). No differences were observed in the prevalence of NAFLD (22.27% vs 29.68%, P = NS) and metabolic syndrome (41.69% vs 36.74%, P = NS). Univariate analysis showed that smoking was not a risk factor for NAFLD (OR = 0.89, 95% CI 0.65-1.21). CONCLUSION: No differences in NAFLD prevalence were observed between current smokers and nonsmokers, and furthermore, no differences were observed in heavy smokers (more than 20 packs/year), indicating that there js no relationship between smoking and NAFLD.
This paper presents a new non-isolated high step-up topology by connecting two buck-boost DC/DC converters in the interleaved form. The presented topology has two identical buck-boost converters ...connected in a parallel-input, series-output manner for boosting the output voltage. This new topology can serve as an alternative to the typically used transformer isolated converter topology. A low-frequency modeling technique MISSCO is used to model and analyse the converter and simulations results are shown.

A 250-km-long broadband and long-period (0.01-20,000 s periods) magnetotelluric (MT) line along latitude 40 1/2°N spans from the California-Nevada border at longitude 120°W across the buried ...extension of the northern Sierra Nevada, the southern Cascades arc, and the subducting Gorda plate to longitude 123°W. The resulting resistivity cross section reveals conductors at the locations of dewatering of the subducting metasomatized crust at 100 km depth, partial melting of the mantle wedge at 40-60 km depth, and melting in the crust shallower than 40 km. The conductor at 100 km is too conductive (8 S/m) to result solely from magma; very conductive fluids must be present either separately or incorporated into hydrous melts. A melt fraction of 7% is estimated for the mantle wedge (average conductivity is 0.06 S/m). Sites of Pleistocene and Holocene volcanism at Lassen Peak, Hat Creek, and Poison Lake are closely associated with crustal conductors inferred to be shallow magma. The MT study also reveals presumably basaltic magma at 40-50 km depth in the upper mantle where the eastern end of the profile extends into the Basin and Range province.
Abstract Aim This cross-sectional study evaluated liver fibrosis in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and compared the characteristics of metabolically healthy obese (MHO) with ...metabolically unhealthy obese (MUHO) patients. Methods The study was nested within a randomized clinical trial (RCT) and included obese patients with NAFLD, as determined by liver ultrasonography. Fibrosis was assessed by transient elastography, and AST-to-platelet ratio index (APRI) and NAFLD score. Patients were compared according to obesity phenotype using various accepted criteria. Results The RCT included 1024 patients with NAFLD, of whom 428 (41.7%) were included in the present study. The prevalence of MHO ranged from 1.2% to 63%, depending on the criteria used. According to various criteria for metabolic health, obese patients had less liver fibrosis. MHO patients, as defined by all criteria, showed a significantly lower prevalence of advanced liver fibrosis (F3–F4) than MUHO on transient elastography (16.5% vs. 28%, respectively; P ≤ 0.05). Conclusion MUHO patients are at higher risk of liver fibrosis and, therefore, the identification of obese patients with ‘healthy’ characteristics is imperative as their entire clinical work-ups are likely to differ.

The use of nanovectors in several medicinal treatments has reached a great importance in the last decade. Some drugs need to be protected to increase their lifetimes in the blood flow, to avoid degradation, to be delivered into target cells or to decrease their side effects. The goal of this work was to design and prepare nanovectors formed by novel surfactants derived from the Ru(bpy)32+ complex. These amphiphilic molecules are assembled to form metallomicelles which can act as pharmaceutical agents and, at the same time, as nanovectors for several drugs. TEM images showed a structural transition from spherical to elongated micelles when the surfactant concentration increased. Fluorescence microscopy confirmed the internalization of these metallomicelles into diverse cell lines and cytotoxicity assays demonstrated specificity for some human cancer cells. The encapsulation of various antibiotics was carried out as well as a thorough study about the DNA condensation by the metallomicelles. To the best of our knowledge, applications of these metallomicelles have not been shown in the literature yet.
