We use very deep near-infrared (NIR) imaging data obtained in MOIRCS Deep Survey (MODS) to investigate the evolution of the galaxy stellar mass function back to z ~ 3. The MODS data reach J = 24.2, H ...= 23.1, and K = 23.1 (5 Delta *s, Vega magnitude) over 103 arcmin2 (wide) and J = 25.1, H = 23.7, and K = 24.1 over 28 arcmin2 (deep) in the GOODS-North region. The wide and very deep NIR data allow us to measure the number density of galaxies down to low stellar mass (109-1010 M ) even at high redshift with high statistical accuracy. The normalization of the mass function decreases with redshift, and the integrated stellar mass density becomes ~8%-18% of the local value at z ~ 2 and ~4%-9% at z ~ 3, which are consistent with results of previous studies in general fields. Furthermore, we found that the low-mass slope becomes steeper with redshift from Delta *a ~ -1.3 at z ~ 1 to Delta *a ~ -1.6 at z ~ 3 and that the evolution of the number density of low-mass (109-1010 M ) galaxies is weaker than that of M* (~1011 M ) galaxies. This indicates that the contribution of low-mass galaxies to the total stellar mass density has been significant at high redshift. The steepening of the low-mass slope with redshift is an opposite trend expected from the stellar mass dependence of the specific star formation rate reported in previous studies. The present result suggests that the hierarchical merging process overwhelmed the effect of the stellar mass growth by star formation and was very important for the stellar mass assembly of these galaxies at 1 z 3.
Dendritic cells (DCs) are the most potent antigen-presenting cells and acquire cellular antigens and danger signals from dying cells to initiate antitumor immune responses via direct cell-to-cell ...interaction and cytokine production. The optimal forms of tumor cell death for priming DCs for the release of danger signals are not fully understood. OBP-301 (Telomelysin) is a telomerase-specific replication-competent adenovirus that induces selective E1 expression and exclusively kills human cancer cells. Here, we show that OBP-301 replication produced the endogenous danger signaling molecule, uric acid, in infected human tumor cells, which in turn stimulated DCs to produce interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) and interleukin 12 (IL-12). Subsequently, IFN-gamma release upregulated the endogenous expression of the proteasome activator PA28 in tumor cells and resulted in the induction of cytotoxic T-lymphocytes. Our data suggest that virus-mediated oncolysis might be the effective stimulus for immature DCs to induce specific activity against human cancer cells.
We investigate the X-ray active galactic nucleus (AGN) properties of millimeter galaxies in the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey South (GOODS-S) field detected with the Atacama Large ...Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), by utilizing the Chandra 7-Ms data, the deepest X-ray survey to date. Our millimeter galaxy sample comes from the ASAGAO survey covering 26 arcmin2 (12 sources at a 1.2 mm flux-density limit of mJy), supplemented by the deeper but narrower 1.3 mm survey of a part of the ASAGAO field by Dunlop et al. Ofthe 25 total millimeter galaxies, 14 have Chandra counterparts. The observed AGN fractions at are found to be % and % for the ultra-luminous and luminous infrared galaxies with log / = 12-12.8 and log / = 11.5-12, respectively. The majority (∼2/3) of the ALMA and/or Herschel detected X-ray AGNs at z = 1.5−3 appear to be star-formation-dominant populations, having / ratios smaller than the "simultaneous evolution" value expected from the local black-hole-mass-to-stellar-mass ( -M*) relation. On the basis of the and stellar mass relation, we infer that a large fraction of star-forming galaxies at have black hole masses that are smaller than those expected from the local -M* relation. This contrasts previous reports on luminous AGNs at the same redshifts detected in wider and shallower surveys, which are subject to selection biases against lower luminosity AGNs. Our results are consistent with an evolutionary scenario in which star formation occurs first, and an AGN-dominant phase follows later, in objects that finally evolve into galaxies with classical bulges.
The aim of this study was to demonstrate the effects of sex and age on serum levels of 1,5-AG in nondiabetic subjects.A total of 1 134 nondiabetic subjects aged 16-96 years with HbA1c less than 6.8% ...were recruited and divided into 4 HbA1c groups (Q1: HbA1c≤5.3; Q2: 5.4-5.8; Q3: 5.9-6.3; and Q4: 6.4-6.8 %). 38 elderly subjects (65 years or older) in the Q3 and Q4 groups (13 men and 25 women) underwent a 75-g oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT).The Q4 group had significantly lower 1,5-AG levels than did the Q1 group among nonelderly males, nonelderly females, and elderly men. In elderly women, 1,5-AG levels did not differ among the 4 HbA1c groups. In both nonelderly and elderly subjects, the 1,5-AG level of the Q1 group was significantly higher in males than in females. Stepwise multivariate regression analysis showed that age was significantly associated with 1,5-AG level in both sexes. HbA1c was significantly associated with the 1,5-AG level in males, while there was no significant association between HbA1c and the 1,5-AG level in females. In the elderly OGTT group, although the glucose levels of both sexes during OGTT were identical, the mean urinary glucose levels and the percentages of subjects with glucosuria were significantly higher in elderly men than in elderly women.Serum 1,5-AG levels were significantly associated with age and sex. The sensitivity of the 1,5-AG level for identifying postprandial hyperglycemia in elderly women with near-normoglycemia is less reliable because they have a higher renal threshold for glucose.
In orthodontic tooth movement (OTM), we should be concerned about external root resorption (ERR) as an undesirable iatrogenic problem, but its mechanisms are not fully understood. Since our previous ...epidemiologic studies found that patients with allergic diseases showed higher rates of ERR during orthodontic treatment, we explored the possible effect of allergic sensitization on ERR. In ovalbumin (OVA)-sensitized Brown–Norway rats, the amounts of ERR and OTM were greater than those in animals subjected to orthodontic force alone. The expression levels of RANKL and pro-inflammatory cytokines were increased in the periodontal tissues of sensitized rats with OTM, compared with control rats. Furthermore, leukotriene B4 (LTB4), a potent lipid mediator of allergic inflammation, and enzymes of the 5-lipoxygenase pathway, the biosynthetic pathway of leukotrienes, were also up-regulated. We found that low doses of aspirin suppressed ERR in allergen-sensitized rats, as well as the expressions of RANKL, pro-inflammatory cytokines, and LTB4. The present findings indicate that allergen sensitization has adverse effects on ERR under OTM, and that aspirin is a potential therapeutic agent for combating ERR.
