Summary
Basaloid squamous cell carcinoma (BSC) of the esophagus is classified as an epithelial malignant tumor and is a rare variant of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Most previous reports have ...suggested that advanced BSC has a poorer prognosis than typical SCC because of its high biological malignancy, but the biological activity of superficial BSC remains unclear. Twenty cases of superficial BSC, which underwent surgical resection in Tokai University Hospital between January 2004 and December 2013, were analyzed retrospectively. Among these cases, 19 cases with a T1 depth of invasion (BSC group) were compared with 180 cases of SCC that were resected during the same period and were pathologically diagnosed as T1 (SCC group). The frequency of lymph node metastasis in the T1 BSC group was significantly lower (2 patients, 11%) than that in the SCC group (84 patients, 47%) (P = 0.005). The frequency of lymphatic invasion in the BSC group was also lower (9 patients, 47%) than that in the SCC group (131 patients, 73%) (P = 0.021). The pathological type of the metastatic lymph node was BSC in all the superficial BSC cases with lymph node metastasis. This study demonstrated that lymph node metastasis was less likely to occur in cases with superficial BSC than in cases with superficial SCC.

Objectives
To evaluate the anamnesis, clinical signs, diagnostic test results, treatment and outcome of chinchillas diagnosed with bacterial conjunctivitis.
Methods
Medical records of 49 chinchillas ...diagnosed with bacterial conjunctivitis were retrospectively reviewed. Association between clinical signs and type of bacteria involved was determined by means of univariate logistic regression.
Results
61·5% of the isolated bacteria were Gram‐negative, and the most common bacterial species was Pseudomonas aeruginosa (50%), followed by Staphylococcus species (26·9%). Chinchillas with acute conjunctivitis (1 to 3 days) were much more commonly affected by Gram‐negative organisms. The majority of chinchillas that presented with concurrent respiratory signs were diagnosed with P. aeruginosa. Clinical resolution of conjunctivitis was reported in 87·8% chinchillas with a median time to clinical resolution of 17·5 days. Susceptibility of P. aeruginosa isolates to potentiated sulphonamides, enrofloxacin, ciprofloxacin, gentamicin, amikacin and polymyxin B was 8·3, 36, 62·5, 88·5, 100 and 100%, respectively.
Clinical Significance
P. aeruginosa is the predominant bacterial species associated with bacterial conjunctivitis in chinchillas. With the exception of duration of clinical signs, information on the anamnesis or physical examination findings cannot aid in distinguishing conjunctivitis caused by P. aeruginosa or other Gram‐negative bacteria from the ones caused by Gram‐positive bacteria. Gentamicin‐ or polymyxin B‐containing antibiotic formulations are recommended for empirical topical therapy.
We provide a quantitative estimate of the radiation dose during relativistic electron precipitation (REP) events at the International Space Station (ISS). To this goal, we take advantage of the data ...collected by the CALorimetric Electron Telescope, the Monitor of All‐sky X‐ray Image, and the Space Environment Data Acquisition equipment‐Attached Payload. The three ISS detectors offer complementary REP observations, including energy spectra and flux directional information, during a period of approximately 2.5 years, from November 2015 to March 2018. We have identified 762 REP events during this period from which we obtain the distribution of radiation dose, relevant to extravehicular activities outside the ISS.
The naturalization of alien Reeves's muntjacs (Muntiacus reevesi) on Izu-Oshima Island, Tokyo, Japan, has proceeded intensively over the last five decades. To clarify whether the gastrointestinal ...helminths of these animals were brought from their original endemic area or were newly acquired in Japan, 32 Reeves's muntjacs trapped on the island were parasitologically examined. In addition to Gongylonema pulchrum in the oesophagus (34.4% prevalence), Chabaudstrongylus ninhae (Dróżdż, 1967) (Trichostrongylidae: Cooperiinae) and Oesophagostomum muntiacum Jian, 1989 (Chabertiidae: Oesophagostominae) were prevalent in the small (28.1%) and large (46.9%) intestines, respectively. For the first time, these trichostrongylid or chabertiid worms were genetically characterized based on partial nucleotide sequences of the nuclear ribosomal RNA gene (rDNA) and mitochondrial DNA cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 gene (cox-1), and the phylogenetic relationships with other members of their family were explored. Since these two intestinal nematode species are inherent in muntjacs, this study demonstrates a new distribution of exotic helminth species in Japan in accordance with the naturalization of alien mammalian hosts. The molecular genetic data collected here could assist the taxonomic assessment of morphological variants in different Muntiacus spp. and/or of different geographical origins. Furthermore, our data may help to define the phylogenetic relationships among such isolates.
Surface tension of molten Si, Ag, and Fe–18Cr–8Ni alloy (Type-304 stainless steel) were measured as a function of the temperature and oxygen partial pressure of an ambient atmosphere by an ...oscillating drop method using electromagnetic levitation, which assures measurement over a wide range of temperatures below and above the melting point and of oxygen partial pressure. For molten silicon, the lower limit of measured temperature was determined by equilibrium oxygen partial pressure for SiO
2
formation; as oxygen partial pressure increases, undercooled conditions necessary for taking measurements become smaller. This is attributed to the low solubility of oxygen in molten silicon. For Ag, however, surface tension can be measured in a wide range of temperature and oxygen partial pressures due to the high solubility of oxygen. A boomerang-shaped behavior of surface tension was observed for Ag in an atmosphere with high oxygen partial pressure; surface tension has a maximum value when plotted against temperature. This boomerang-shaped behavior is attributed to desorption of oxygen at high temperature; surface tension increases with increasing temperature. The boomerang-shaped behavior was also observed for Fe–18Cr–8Ni alloy.
We present the results of searches for gamma-ray counterparts of the LIGO/Virgo gravitational wave events using CALorimetric Electron Telescope (CALET) observations. The main instrument of CALET, ...CALorimeter (CAL), observes gamma-rays from ∼1 GeV up to 10 TeV with a field of view (FOV) of nearly 2 sr. In addition, the CALET gamma-ray burst monitor views ∼3 sr and ∼2π sr of the sky in the 7 keV-1 MeV and the 40 keV-20 MeV bands, respectively, by using two different crystal scintillators. The CALET observations on the International Space Station started in 2015 October, and here we report analyses of events associated with the following gravitational wave events: GW151226, GW170104, GW170608, GW170814, and GW170817. Although only upper limits on gamma-ray emission are obtained, they correspond to a luminosity of 1049 ∼ 1053 erg s−1 in the GeV energy band depending on the distance and the assumed time duration of each event, which is approximately on the order of luminosity of typical short gamma-ray bursts. This implies that there will be a favorable opportunity to detect high-energy gamma-ray emission in further observations if additional gravitational wave events with favorable geometry will occur within our FOV. We also show the sensitivity of CALET for gamma-ray transient events, which is on the order of 10−7 erg cm−2 s−1 for an observation of 100 s in duration.
The CALorimetric Electron Telescope primary detector (CALET-CAL) is a 30 radiation-length-deep hybrid calorimeter designed for the accurate measurement of high-energy cosmic rays. It is capable of ...triggering on and giving near complete containment of electromagnetic showers from primary electrons and gamma rays from 1 GeV to over 10 TeV. The first 24 months of on-orbit scientific data (2015 November 01-2017 October 31) provide valuable characterization of the performance of the calorimeter based on analyses of the gamma-ray data set in general and bright point sources in particular. We describe the gamma-ray analysis, the expected performance of the calorimeter based on Monte Carlo simulations, the agreement of the flight data with the simulated results, and the outlook for long-term gamma-ray observations with the CAL.
Summary
Undernutrition and cachexia have been suggested to be risk factors for postoperative complications and survival in cancer patients. The aim of this study was to investigate whether body mass ...index (BMI) is related to the short‐term and long‐term outcomes in patients who undergo an esophagectomy for the resection of esophageal squamous cell cancer (ESCC). Three hundred forty patients who underwent an esophagectomy for the resection of ESCC between 2003 and 2008 were retrospectively reviewed. The patients were divided into two groups: an L‐BMI group characterized by a BMI < 18.5 kg/m2 and an N‐BMI group characterized by a BMI ≥ 18.5 kg/m2. Clinical and pathological outcome were compared between groups. The study included 40 patients in the L‐BMI group and 300 patients in the N‐BMI group. A clinicopathological assessment showed that nodal involvement was seen more frequently in the L‐BMI group (P = 0.016). Pulmonary complications seemed to occur more frequently in the L‐BMI group (P = 0.006). The 5‐year overall survival rate was higher in the N‐BMI group (63.6%) than in the L‐BMI group (32.3%) (P < 0.001). The 5‐year disease‐free survival rate was also higher in the N‐BMI group (58.0%) than in the L‐BMI group (33.6%) (P = 0.001). In multivariate analysis, the BMI (hazard ratio, 2.154; 95% CI, 1.349–3.440, P = 0.001) was found to be an independent prognostic factor for overall survival. Our data suggested that a lower BMI not only increased pulmonary complications but also impaired overall and disease‐free survival after an esophagectomy for the resection of ESCC.

To evaluate the incidence and risk factors for secondary solid tumors in Japan after allogeneic hematopoietic SCT (allo-HSCT), 2062 patients who had received allo-HSCT between 1984 and 2005 were ...retrospectively analyzed. Twenty-eight patients who developed 30 solid tumors were identified a median of 5.6 years after transplantation. The risk for developing tumors was 2.16-fold higher than that of the age- and sex-adjusted general population. The cumulative incidence of solid tumors at 10 years after allo-HSCT was 2.4%. The risk was significantly higher for tumors of the skin, oral cavity and esophagus (standard incidental ratio 40.23, 35.25 and 10.73, respectively). No increase in gastric, colon or lung cancer, despite being the most prevalent neoplasm in the Japanese, was observed. In multivariate analysis, occurrence of chronic GVHD and malignant lymphoma as a primary disease was associated with a higher risk for developing solid tumors. Eighteen patients are still alive, and their 5-year probability of survival since diagnosis of solid tumors is 59.7%. Our data suggest that the incidence and risk factors of secondary solid tumors in Japanese allo-HSCT recipients are comparable to those reported in Western countries and emphasize that the early detection of solid tumors has a crucial role in improving OS.
