Boron (B), an essential nutrient for plants, participates in many physiological processes, with emphasis its role in the formation of the plant’s cell wall. In soil, the range between deficiency and toxicity of B is very narrow as compared to other nutrients, which makes its management in agriculture very difficult, as it depends on the soil and environmental conditions. B stress simultaneously acts with others (extreme temperatures, excess of light, high concentration of CO2, drought, salinity or heavy metal contamination, etc.). The effects of these other stresses could increase the sensitivity of plants to B toxicity or deficiency. The simultaneous combination (B stress × other abiotic stresses) is a complex interaction that should be analyzed in detail if the resistance of crops to climate change is needed. This article reviews the response of plants when facing a combination of B stress with other stresses, and compares this response with the individual stresses. Also, in the last few years, the role of B has been described in multiple plant functions that can improve its resilience to specific stresses. Thus, this article also analyses in what conditions the application of B can be efficient for the improvement of the plant’s response to other stresses.
We present new measurements of the evolution of the X-ray luminosity functions (XLFs) of unabsorbed and absorbed active galactic nuclei (AGNs) out to z ∼ 5. We construct samples containing 2957 ...sources detected at hard (2–7 keV) X-ray energies and 4351 sources detected at soft (0.5–2 keV) energies from a compilation of Chandra surveys supplemented by wide-area surveys from ASCA and ROSAT. We consider the hard and soft X-ray samples separately and find that the XLF based on either (initially neglecting absorption effects) is best described by a new flexible model parametrization where the break luminosity, normalization, and faint-end slope all evolve with redshift. We then incorporate absorption effects, separately modelling the evolution of the XLFs of unabsorbed (20 < log N
H < 22) and absorbed (22 < log N
H < 24) AGNs, seeking a model that can reconcile both the hard- and soft-band samples. We find that the absorbed AGN XLF has a lower break luminosity, a higher normalization, and a steeper faint-end slope than the unabsorbed AGN XLF out to z ∼ 2. Hence, absorbed AGNs dominate at low luminosities, with the absorbed fraction falling rapidly as luminosity increases. Both XLFs undergo strong luminosity evolution which shifts the transition in the absorbed fraction to higher luminosities at higher redshifts. The evolution in the shape of the total XLF is primarily driven by the changing mix of unabsorbed and absorbed populations.
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia and one of the major causes of disability and dependency in older people. Accumulating evidences link gut microbiota with different ...diseases and its relationship with neurodegenerative diseases is becoming most intriguing. This study was aimed to compare the gut microbiota of transgenic APP/PS1 (TG) mice, a well‐established deterministic mouse model of AD, with their C57BL/6 wild‐type (WT) littermates. Faecal samples were collected from 3‐, 6‐ and 24‐month‐old mice and analysed by pyrosequencing of the V1–V3 region of the bacterial 16S rRNA genes. Bacterial profiles were similar in all young mice (3 months old), and started to diverge so that 6‐month‐old WT and TG mice had different and more diverse microbiota. During ageing, Turicibacteriaceae (typical mice bacterial group) and Rikenellaceae increased in all groups, although total Bacteroidetes remained stable. TG mice were characterized by an increase in Proteobacteria after 6 months, particularly the genus Sutterella (Betaproteobacteria), interestingly also increased in autism disorder. Also, the inflammation related family Erysipelotrichaceae was more abundant in TG mice at 24 months compared to wild‐type control. In summary, AD pathology in mice shifts the gut microbiota towards profiles that share features with autism and inflammatory disorders.
Significance and Impact of the Study

Using the transgenic APP/PS1 (TG) mouse model, we successfully characterized how AD pathology shifted gut microbiota composition during ageing towards an inflammation related bacterial profile related to Proteobacteria and Erysipelotrichaceae and suggest that these changes could contribute to disease progression and severity. Microbiota‐targeted interventions could therefore represent a strategy to postpone disease symptoms.

Recent studies have demonstrated the impact of diet on microbiota composition, but the essential need for the optimization of production rates and costs forces farms and aquaculture production to ...carry out continuous dietary tests. In order to understand the effect of total fishmeal replacement by vegetable-based feed in the sea bream (Sparus aurata), the microbial composition of the stomach, foregut, midgut and hindgut was analysed using high-throughput 16S rDNA sequencing, also considering parameters of growth, survival and nutrient utilisation indices.A total of 91,539 16S rRNA filtered-sequences were analysed, with an average number of 3661.56 taxonomically assigned, high-quality sequences per sample. The dominant phyla throughout the whole gastrointestinal tract were Actinobacteria, Protebacteria and Firmicutes. A lower diversity in the stomach in comparison to the other intestinal sections was observed. The microbial composition of the Recirculating Aquaculture System was totally different to that of the sea bream gastrointestinal tract. Total fishmeal replacement had an important impact on microbial profiles but not on diversity. Streptococcus (p-value: 0.043) and Photobacterium (p-value: 0.025) were highly represented in fish fed with fishmeal and vegetable-meal diets, respectively. In the stomach samples with the vegetable diet, reads of chloroplasts and mitochondria from vegetable dietary ingredients were rather abundant. Principal Coordinate Analysis showed a clear differentiation between diets in the microbiota present in the gut, supporting the presence of specific bacterial consortia associated with the diet.Although differences in growth and nutritive parameters were not observed, a negative effect of the vegetable diet on the survival rate was determined. Further studies are required to shed more light on the relationship between the immune system and sea bream gastrointestinal tract microbiota and should consider the modulation of the microbiota to improve the survival rate and nutritive efficacy when using plant-based diets.

Abstract
Motivation
Venn and Euler diagrams are extensively used for the visualization of relationships between experiments and datasets. However, representing more than three datasets while keeping ...the proportions of each region is still not feasible with existing tools.
Results
We present an algorithm to render all the regions of a generalized n-dimensional Venn diagram, while keeping the area of each region approximately proportional to the number of elements included. In addition, missing regions in Euler diagrams lead to simplified representations. The algorithm generates an n-dimensional Venn diagram and inserts circles of given areas in each region. Then, the diagram is rearranged with a dynamic, self-correcting simulation in which each set border is contracted until it contacts the circles inside. This algorithm is implemented in a C++ tool (nVenn) with or without a web interface. The web interface also provides the ability to analyze the regions of the diagram.

We assessed the genetic structure of populations of the widely distributed sea cucumber Holothuria (Holothuria) mammata Grube, 1840, and investigated the effects of marine barriers to gene flow and ...historical processes. Several potential genetic breaks were considered, which would separate the Atlantic and Mediterranean basins, the isolated Macaronesian Islands from the other locations analysed, and the Western Mediterranean and Aegean Sea (Eastern Mediterranean). We analysed mitochondrial 16S and COI gene sequences from 177 individuals from four Atlantic locations and four Mediterranean locations. Haplotype diversity was high (H = 0.9307 for 16S and 0.9203 for COI), and the haplotypes were closely related (π = 0.0058 for 16S and 0.0071 for COI). The lowest genetic diversities were found in the Aegean Sea population. Our results showed that the COI gene was more variable and more useful for the detection of population structure than the 16S gene. The distribution of mtDNA haplotypes, the pairwise FST values and the results of exact tests and amova revealed: (i) a significant genetic break between the population in the Aegean Sea and those in the other locations, as supported by both mitochondrial genes, and (ii) weak differentiation of the Canary and Azores Islands from the other populations; however, the populations from the Macaronesian Islands, Algarve and West Mediterranean could be considered to be a panmictic metapopulation. Isolation by distance was not identified in H. (H.) mammata. Historical events behind the observed findings, together with the current oceanographic patterns, were proposed and discussed as the main factors that determine the population structure and genetic signature of H. (H.) mammata.
We report on anomalously long duration (2 ms) count rate bursts following the impact of cosmic ray showers near a 7.62 cm x⊘7.62 cm LaBr3 scintillation detector at the High Altitude Water Cherenkov ...array in Mexico, previously described by Stenkin et al. (2001), and termed “neutron bursts.” The largest burst produced 198 counts within 2 ms in our LaBr3 detector. We simulate the neutron burst albedo flux (that is, secondary emissions from an extensive air shower core impacting the ground), and show that (1) the characteristic spectra and count rates are well explained by neutron absorption in the ground and (2) any cosmic ray secondary that produces neutrons, either through hadron inelastic collisions, or photoneutron production by gamma‐rays, produces the same characteristic spectra. This implies that other natural phenomena that produce downward beams of gamma‐rays, like Terrestrial gamma ray flashes, should produce a similar “neutron burst” signature from the photoneutron reactions occurring in the soil.
Plain Language Summary
When very large cosmic ray showers (CRS) impact the ground, neutrons are produced in the soil that will rattle around until they become captured by soil particles and release energetic gamma‐rays. This produces a slow explosion of particles emanating from the ground following a CRS impact, and is termed a 'neutron burst'. We present recent observations of neutron bursts from a hand held sized gamma‐ray detector at the High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) array in Mexico, that exhibit interesting spectral features (the presence of positron annihilation), and an interesting time structure (hundreds of counts within a few ms). Our simulations indicate that Terrestrial gamma‐ray flashes (TGFs, bursts of gamma‐rays associated with lightning) should also produce these neutron bursts. An implication of this work is that existing deployments of ground based TGF instruments, comprised of small gamma‐ray detectors, can additionally be used to observe signatures of large cosmic ray showers on clear days.

ABSTRACT
The diffuse extragalactic background light (EBL) is formed by ultraviolet (UV), optical, and infrared (IR) photons mainly produced by star formation processes over the history of the ...Universe and contains essential information about galaxy evolution and cosmology. Here, we present a new determination of the evolving EBL spectral energy distribution using a novel approach purely based on galaxy data aiming to reduce current uncertainties on the higher redshifts and IR intensities. Our calculations use multiwavelength observations from the UV to the far-IR of a sample of approximately 150 000 galaxies detected up to z ∼ 6 in the five fields of the Cosmic Assembly Near-Infrared Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey from the Hubble Space Telescope. This is one of the most comprehensive and deepest multiwavelength galaxy data sets ever obtained. These unprecedented resources allow us to derive the overall EBL evolution up to z ∼ 6 and its uncertainties. Our results agree with cosmic observables estimated from galaxy surveys and γ-ray attenuation such as monochromatic luminosity densities, including those in the far-IR, and star formation rate densities, also at the highest redshifts. Optical depths from our EBL approximation, which will be robust at high redshifts and for γ-rays up to tens of TeV, will be reported in a companion paper.

Chemical oxygen demand (COD), ammonium and several anions were measured during the electro-oxidation process, and the influence of the applied current density (20–200

2) was analysed on process kinetics. Analytical assessment showed that several emerging pollutants (pharmaceuticals, personal care products, stimulants, etc.) were presented both in the effluent of the secondary WWTP as well as in the RO concentrate. For this reason, a group of 10 emerging pollutants, those found with higher concentrations, was selected in order to test whether electro-oxidation can be also applied for their mitigation. In the removal of emerging pollutants the electrical current density in the range 20–100
A/m
2 did not show influence likely due to the mass transfer resistance developed in the process when the oxidized solutes are present in such low concentrations. Their removal rates were fitted to first order expressions, and the apparent kinetic constants for the anodic oxidation of each compound were calculated. Finally, the formation of trihalomethanes (THMs) has been checked; concluding that after selecting the appropriate operational conditions the attained concentration is lower than the standards for drinking water established in European and EPA regulations.
Drought is now recognized as the abiotic stress that causes most problems in agriculture, mainly due to the strong water demand from intensive culture and the effects of climate change, especially in ...arid/semi-arid areas. When plants suffer from water deficit (WD), a plethora of negative physiological alterations such as cell turgor loss, reduction of CO
net assimilation rate, oxidative stress damage, and nutritional imbalances, among others, can lead to a decrease in the yield production and loss of commercial quality. Nutritional imbalances in plants grown under drought stress occur by decreasing water uptake and leaf transpiration, combined by alteration of nutrient uptake and long-distance transport processes. Plants try to counteract these effects by activating drought resistance mechanisms. Correct accumulation of salts and water constitutes an important portion of these mechanisms, in particular of those related to the cell osmotic adjustment and function of stomata. In recent years, molecular insights into the regulation of K
, Cl
, and water transport under drought have been gained. Therefore, this article brings an update on this topic. Moreover, agronomical practices that ameliorate drought symptoms of crops by improving nutrient homeostasis will also be presented.
