Neurovascular dysfunction arising from endothelial cell damage is an early pathogenic event that contributes to the neurodegenerative process occurring in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Since the ...mechanisms underlying endothelial dysfunction are not fully elucidated, this study was aimed to explore the hypothesis that brain endothelial cell death is induced upon the sustained activation of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress response by amyloid-beta (Aβ) peptide, which deposits in the cerebral vessels in many AD patients and transgenic mice. Incubation of rat brain endothelial cells (RBE4 cell line) with Aβ1–40 increased the levels of several markers of ER stress-induced unfolded protein response (UPR), in a time-dependent manner, and affected the Ca2+ homeostasis due to the release of Ca2+ from this intracellular store. Finally, Aβ1–40 was shown to activate both mitochondria-dependent and -independent apoptotic cell death pathways. Enhanced release of cytochrome c from mitochondria and activation of the downstream caspase-9 were observed in cells treated with Aβ1–40 concomitantly with caspase-12 activation. Furthermore, Aβ1–40 activated the apoptosis effectors' caspase-3 and promoted the translocation of apoptosis-inducing factor (AIF) to the nucleus demonstrating the involvement of caspase-dependent and -independent mechanisms during Aβ-induced endothelial cell death. In conclusion, our data demonstrate that ER stress plays a significant role in Aβ1–40-induced apoptotic cell death in brain endothelial cells suggesting that ER stress-targeted therapeutic strategies might be useful in AD to counteract vascular defects and ultimately neurodegeneration.

Surface bioconjugation of antimicrobial peptides (AMP) onto nanoparticles (AMP-NP) is a complex, multistep, and time-consuming task. Herein, a microfluidic system for the one-pot production of AMP-NP ...was developed. Norbornene-modified chitosan was used for NP production (NorChit-NP), and thiolated-AMP was grafted on their surface via thiol–norbornene “photoclick” chemistry over exposure of two parallel UV LEDs. The MSI-78A was the AMP selected due to its high activity against a high priority (level 2) antibiotic-resistant gastric pathogen: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori). AMP-NP (113 ± 43 nm; zeta potential 14.3 ± 7 mV) were stable in gastric settings without a cross-linker (up to 5 days in pH 1.2) and bactericidal against two highly pathogenic H. pylori strains (1011 NP/mL with 96 μg/mL MSI-78A). Eradication was faster for H. pylori 26695 (30 min) than for H. pylori J99 (24 h), which was explained by the lower minimum bactericidal concentration of soluble MSI-78A for H. pylori 26695 (32 μg/mL) than for H. pylori J99 (128 μg/mL). AMP-NP was bactericidal by inducing H. pylori cell membrane alterations, intracellular reorganization, generation of extracellular vesicles, and leakage of cytoplasmic contents (transmission electron microscopy). Moreover, NP were not cytotoxic against two gastric cell lines (AGS and MKN74, ATCC) at bactericidal concentrations. Overall, the designed microfluidic setup is a greener, simpler, and faster approach than the conventional methods to obtain AMP-NP. This technology can be further explored for the bioconjugation of other thiolated-compounds.
Airborne wind energy (AWE) has received increasing attention during the last decade, with the goal of achieving electricity generation solutions that may be used as a complement or even an ...alternative to conventional wind turbines. Despite that several concepts have already been proposed and investigated by several companies and research institutions, no mature technology exists as yet. The mode of energy generation, the type of wing, the take-off and landing approaches, and the control mechanisms, to name a few, may vary among AWE crosswind systems. Given the diversity of possibilities, it is necessary to determine the most relevant factors that drive AWE exploration. This paper presents a review on the characteristics of currently existing AWE technological solutions, focusing on the hardware architecture of crosswind systems, with the purpose of providing the information required to identify and assess key factors to be considered in the choice of such systems. The identified factors are categorized into four distinct classes: technical design factors (aerodynamic performance, mass-to-area ratio, durability, survivability); operational factors (continuity of power production, controllability, take-off and landing feasibility); fabrication and logistical factors (manufacturability, logistics); and social acceptability factors (visual impact, noise impact, ecological impact, safety).
In recent years, microbial carotenoids have emerged as a promising alternative for the pharmaceutical and food industries, particularly in promoting human health due to their potent antioxidant and ...antimicrobial properties. Microbial carotenoids, particularly those produced by yeast, bacteria, and microalgae, are synthesized intracellularly, requiring the use of solvents for their effective extraction and recovery. The conventional use of toxic volatile organic solvents (VOCs) like hexane, petroleum ether, and dimethyl sulfoxide in the extraction of microbial carotenoids has been common. However, ongoing research is introducing innovative, non-toxic, environmentally friendly tailor-made solvents, such as ionic liquids (IL) and deep eutectic solvents (DES), indicating a new era of cleaner and biocompatible technologies. This review aims to highlight recent advancements in utilizing IL and DES for obtaining carotenoids from microorganisms. Additionally, we explore the utilization of in silico tools designed to determine the solubilities of microbial carotenoids in tailor-made DES and ILs. This presents a promising alternative for the scientific community, potentially reducing the need for extensive experimental screening of solvents for the recovery of microbial carotenoids in the separation processing. According to our expert perspective, both IL and DES exhibit a plethora of exceptional attributes for the recovery of microbial carotenoids. Nevertheless, the current employment of these solvents for recovery of carotenoids is restricted to scientific exploration, as their feasibility for practical application in industrial settings has yet to be conclusively demonstrated.

Porous carbons derived from metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising materials for a number of energy- and environment-related applications, but their almost exclusively microporous texture can ...be an obstacle to their performance in practical uses. Here, we introduce a novel strategy for the generation of very uniform mesoporosity in a prototypical MOF, namely, zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8). The process, referred to as “nanopore lithography”, makes use of graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets enclosing ZIF-8 particles as masks or templates for the transfer of mesoporous texture to the latter. Upon controlled carbonization and activation, nanopores created in the GO envelope serve as selective entry points for localized etching of carbonized ZIF-8, so that such nanopores are replicated in the MOF-derived carbonaceous structure. The resulting porous carbons are dominated by uniform mesopores ∼3–4 nm in width and possess specific surface areas of ∼1300–1400 m2 g–1. Furthermore, we investigate and discuss the specific experimental conditions that afford the mesopore-templating action of the GO nanosheets. Electrochemical characterization revealed an improved capacitance as well as a faster, more reversible charge/discharge kinetics for the ZIF-8-derived porous carbons obtained through nanopore lithography, relative to those for their counterparts with standard activation (no GO templating), thus indicating the potential practical advantage of the present approach in capacitive energy storage applications.
The deconstruction of banana peel for carbohydrate recovery was performed by sequential treatment (acid, alkaline, and enzymatic). The pretreatment with citric acid promoted the extraction of pectin, ...resulting in a yield of 8%. In addition, xylose and XOS, 348.5 and 17.3 mg/g xylan, respectively, were also quantified in acidic liquor as a result of partial depolymerization of hemicellulose. The spent solid was pretreated with alkaline solution (NaOH or KOH) for delignification and release of residual carbohydrates from the hemicellulose. The yields of xylose and arabinose (225.2 and 174.0 mg/g hemicellulose) were approximately 40% higher in the pretreatment with KOH, while pretreatment with NaOH promoted higher delignification (67%), XOS yield (32.6 mg/g xylan), and preservation of cellulosic fraction. Finally, the spent alkaline solid, rich in cellulose (76%), was treated enzymatically to release glucose, reaching the final concentration of 28.2 g/L. The mass balance showed that through sequential treatment, 9.9 g of xylose, 0.5 g of XOS, and 8.2 g of glucose were obtained from 100 g of raw banana peels, representing 65.8% and 46.5% conversion of hemicellulose and cellulose, respectively. The study of the fractionation of carbohydrates in banana peel proved to be a useful tool for valorization, mainly of the hemicellulose fraction for the production of XOS and xylose with high value applications in the food industry.

Using this benign, atom‐economic protocol, the desired selenylated products were obtained regioselectively in good to excellent yields by using a half molar equiv. of the diselenides.

The reaction is mediated by the iodine, obtained from the oxidation of KI at the anode.
We perform Ramsey interferometry on an ultracold ^{87}Rb ensemble confined in an optical dipole trap. We use a π pulse set at the middle of the interferometer to restore the coherence of the spin ...ensemble by canceling out phase inhomogeneities and creating a spin echo in the contrast. However, for high atomic densities, we observe the opposite behavior: the π pulse accelerates the dephasing of the spin ensemble leading to a faster contrast decay of the interferometer. We understand this phenomenon as a competition between the spin-echo technique and an exchange-interaction driven spin self-rephasing mechanism based on the identical spin rotation effect. Our experimental data are well reproduced by a numerical model.
In semiconductor superlattices, when Bragg oscillating electrons interact with an input electromagnetic field, frequency multiplication is possible. An ideal superlattice has a purely antisymmetric ...voltage current response and can thus produce only odd harmonics. However, real world superlattices can also have even harmonic response and that increases the range of possible output frequencies. These effects have been recently explained with a predictive model that combines an Ansatz solution for the Boltzmann Equation with a Nonequilibrium Green’s Functions approach. This predictive tool, coupled with recent progress on GHz input sources, support the growing interest in developing compact room temperature devices that can operate from the GHz to the THz range. The natural question to ask is what efficiencies can be expected. This paper addresses this issue by investigating power-conversion efficiency in irradiated semiconductor superlattices. Interface imperfections are consistently included in the theory and they strongly influence the power output of both odd and even harmonics. Good agreement is obtained for predicted odd harmonic outputs with experimental data for a wide frequency range. The intrinsic conversion efficiency used is based on the estimated amplitude of the input field inside the sample and thus independent of geometrical factors that characterize different setups. The method opens the possibility of designing even harmonic output power by controlling the interface quality.
This work reports the synthesis and characterization of mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) functionalized with tridecafluorooctyltriethoxysilane (F13) and their in situ incorporation onto cotton ...textiles. The hybrid MSNs and the functional textiles were prepared by a one-pot co-condensation methodology between tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) and F13, with hexadecyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC) as the template and triethanolamine as the base. The influence of the F13 to TEOS molar ratio (1:10, 1:5 and 1:3) on the nanoparticle morphology, porosity, degree of functionalization, and hydro/oleophobic properties is discussed. The hybrid nanosilicas presented high colloidal stability and were spherical and monodispersed with average particle size of ∼45 nm. They also showed high surface areas, large pore volumes, and a wormhole-type mesoporous structure. The increase in the organosilane proportion during the co-condensation process led to a more radially branched wormhole-like mesoporosity, a decrease in the surface area, pore volume, and amount of surface silanol groups, and an enrichment of the surface with fluorocarbon moieties. These changes imparted hydrophobic and oleophobic properties to the materials, especially to that containing the highest F13 loading. Cotton textiles were coated with the F13-MSNs through an efficient and less time-consuming route. The combination between surface roughness and mesoporosity imparted by the MSNs, and the low surface energy provided by the organosilane resulted in superhydrophobic functional textiles. Moreover, the textile with the highest loading of fluorocarbon groups was superamphiphobic.
