The stability of wheat production in the semi-arid Pampa region is low because of the drought that affects the crop in different stages of the growth cycle. A collaboration between breeder and ...physiologist is considered necessary to produce varieties with high-yield and drought resistance. In a field trial, the performance of eleven wheats and one triticale with regard to water parameters and grain yield was evaluated under irrigated and dryland conditions. Foliar length, leaf temperature, water potential, yield and yield components, and harvest index were determined. The stability of the membrane structures was analyzed using Sullivan's preservation index. Based on the performance of these 12 genotypes with regard to the above mentioned parameters, a table on relative sensitivity to drought was designed.
In a physiological study of water parameters in four cultivars of wheat, as DPV increased and soil humidity decreased, decreases were observed in leaf temperature increases. No significant ...differences were observed in yield or its components or in growth parameters such as leaf area index, leaf area duration, and the rate of relative growth. An important loss of tillers in the four varieties was observed toward the end of the crop cycle in November. The stability of membrane structures, in relation to the water stress and estimated by the Sullivan Test, demonstrated a similar degree of deterioration in the four cultivars.
