We simulate the possibility of scaling channel formation to low densities plasmas of low atomic number gas over a large range of pulse duration including (1) pulses up to 300 ps in duration, using ...inverse bremsstrahlung (IB) heating and (2) ultrashort pulses up to 100s of femtoseconds for generating tenuous plasmas of centimeter to meter lengths by optical field ionization (OFI) 1. Results show IB heating up to tens of eV, and channels formed from an initial density of 1×10 18 cm −3 with axial densities as low as 1×10 17 cm −3 , and radius of 50 μm. It has been shown that centimeter-scale waveguides can be generated via OFI heating at densities of approximately 1×10 17 cm −3 2; we show calculations and theory of this channel formation using an axicon. Lastly, we outline the experimental setup to be used in future experiments at the University of Texas Tabletop Terawatt (UT3) facility.
Androgen receptor (AR), a member of the steroid receptor family, is a transcription factor that has an important role in the regulation of both prostate cell proliferation and growth suppression. AR ...coactivators may influence the transition between cell growth and growth suppression. We have shown previously that the internally spliced ARA70 isoform, ARA70beta, promotes prostate cancer cell growth and invasion. Here we report that the full length ARA70alpha, in contrast, represses prostate cancer cell proliferation and anchorage-independent growth in vitro and inhibits tumor growth in nude mice xenograft experiments in vivo. Further, the growth inhibition by ARA70alpha is AR-dependent and mediated through induction of apoptosis rather than cell cycle arrest. Interestingly, AR with T877A mutation in LNCaP cells decreased its physical and functional interaction with ARA70alpha, facilitating the growth of LNCaP cells. The tumor suppressor function of ARA70alpha is consistent with our previous findings that ARA70alpha expression is decreased in prostate cancer cells compared with benign prostate. ARA70alpha also reduced the invasion ability of LNCaP cells. Although growth inhibition by ARA70alpha is AR-dependent, the inhibition of cell invasion is an androgen-independent process. These results strongly suggest that ARA70alpha functions as a tumor suppressor gene.
OBJECTIVE To determine if a relationship exists between participation in a school breakfast program and measures of psychosocial and academic functioning in school-aged children. METHODS Information ...on participation in a school breakfast program, school record data, and in-depth interviews with parents and children were collected in 1 public school in Philadelphia, Pa, and 2 public schools in Baltimore, Md, prior to the implementation of a universally free (UF) breakfast program and again after the program had been in place for 4 months. One hundred thirty-three low-income students had complete data before and after the UF breakfast program on school breakfast participation and school-recorded measures, and 85 of these students had complete psychosocial interview data before and after the UF breakfast program. Teacher ratings of behavior before and after the UF breakfast program were available for 76 of these students. RESULTS Schoolwide data showed that prior to the UF breakfast program, 240 (15%) of the 1627 students in the 3 schools were eating a school-supplied breakfast each day. Of the 133 students in the interview sample, 24 (18%) of the students ate a school-supplied breakfast often, 26 (20%) ate a school-supplied breakfast sometimes, and 83 (62%) ate a school-supplied breakfast rarely or never. Prior to the UF breakfast program, students who ate a school-supplied breakfast often or sometimes had significantly higher math scores and significantly lower scores on child-, parent-, and teacher-reported symptom questionnaires than children who ate a school-supplied breakfast rarely or never. At the end of the school term 4 months after the implementation of the UF breakfast program, school-supplied breakfast participation had nearly doubled and 429 (27%) of the 1612 children in the 3 schools were participating in the school breakfast program each day. In the interview sample, almost half of the children had increased their participation. Students who increased their participation in the school breakfast program had significantly greater increases in their math grades and significantly greater decreases in the rates of school absence and tardiness than children whose participation remained the same or decreased. Child and teacher ratings of psychosocial problems also decreased to a significantly greater degree for children with increased participation in the school breakfast program. CONCLUSION Both cross-sectional and longitudinal data from this study provide strong evidence that higher rates of participation in school breakfast programs are associated in the short-term with improved student functioning on a broad range of psychosocial and academic measures.Arch Pediatr Adolesc Med. 1998;152:899-907-->
beta-TrCP, the substrate recognition subunit of a Skp1-Cul1-F-box (SCF) ubiquitin ligase, is ubiquitously expressed from two distinct paralogs, targeting many regulatory proteins for proteasomal ...degradation. We generated inducible beta-TrCP hypomorphic mice and found that they are surprisingly healthy, yet have a severe testicular defect. We show that the two beta-TrCP paralogs have a nonredundant role in spermatogenesis. The testicular defect is tightly associated with cell adhesion failure within the seminiferous tubules and is fully reversible upon beta-TrCP restoration. Remarkably, testicular depletion of a single beta-TrCP substrate, Snail1, rescued the adhesion defect and restored spermatogenesis. Our studies highlight an unexpected functional reserve of this central E3, as well as a bottleneck in a specific tissue: a single substrate whose stabilization is incompatible with testicular differentiation.

The Great Recession has had a powerful effect on metropolitan regions and on local governments. The real-estate bubble burst in 2007, putting many owners under water (the mortgage exceeded the market ...value of the home) and the stock markets plummeted in 2008, wiping out hundreds of billions of dollars in investments. Consequently, the unemployment rate in the nation soared quickly to over 9 percent and has declined ever-so-slightly over the last several years and appears stuck at around 7–8 percent, well above the pre–Great Recession levels of 4–5 percent. Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) is one of the systematic challenges preventing 21cm interferometric instruments from detecting the Epoch of Reionization. To mitigate the effects of RFI on data ...analysis pipelines, numerous inpaint techniques have been developed to restore RFI corrupted data. We examine the qualitative and quantitative errors introduced into the visibilities and power spectrum due to inpainting. We perform our analysis on simulated data as well as real data from the Hydrogen Epoch of Reionization Array (HERA) Phase 1 upper limits. We also introduce a convolutional neural network that capable of inpainting RFI corrupted data in interferometric instruments. We train our network on simulated data and show that our network is capable at inpainting real data without requiring to be retrained. We find that techniques that incorporate high wavenumbers in delay space in their modeling are best suited for inpainting over narrowband RFI. We also show that with our fiducial parameters Discrete Prolate Spheroidal Sequences (DPSS) and CLEAN provide the best performance for intermittent ``narrowband'' RFI while Gaussian Progress Regression (GPR) and Least Squares Spectral Analysis (LSSA) provide the best performance for larger RFI gaps. However we caution that these qualitative conclusions are sensitive to the chosen hyperparameters of each inpainting technique. We find these results to be consistent in both simulated and real visibilities. We show that all inpainting techniques reliably reproduce foreground dominated modes in the power spectrum. Since the inpainting techniques should not be capable of reproducing noise realizations, we find that the largest errors occur in the noise dominated delay modes. We show that in the future, as the noise level of the data comes down, CLEAN and DPSS are most capable of reproducing the fine frequency structure in the visibilities of HERA data.
The BimEL tumor suppressor is a potent proapoptotic BH3-only protein. We found that, in response to survival signals, BimEL was rapidly phosphorylated on three serine residues in a conserved degron, ...facilitating binding and degradation via the F box protein betaTrCP. Phosphorylation of the BimEL degron was executed by Rsk1/2 and promoted by the Erk1/2-mediated phosphorylation of BimEL on Ser69. Compared to wild-type BimEL, a BimEL phosphorylation mutant unable to bind betaTrCP was stabilized and consequently potent at inducing apoptosis by the intrinsic mitochondrial pathway. Moreover, although non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cells often become resistant to gefitinib (a clinically relevant tyrosine kinase inhibitor that induces apoptosis through BimEL), silencing of either betaTrCP or Rsk1/2 resulted in BimEL-mediated apoptosis of both gefitinib-sensitive and gefitinib-insensitive NSCLC cells. Our findings reveal that betaTrCP promotes cell survival in cooperation with the ERK-RSK pathway by targeting BimEL for degradation.
During 2015, a unique launch opportunity exists that allows for a New-Frontiers-class mission to discover a compositional gradient of small bodies in our solar system. The proposed seven year mission ...includes a flyby of main belt asteroid (108144) 2001 HM1, a flyby and impactor release (a la Deep Impact) at the Trojan asteroid (624) Hektor (a suspected contact binary) with companion P/2006, and a flyby with impactor release at the Centaur asteroid 39P/Oterma. The variety of types and positions of these small bodies will help answer some of the fundamental questions we have for the evolution and composition of our solar system. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) Planetary Science Summer School team has designed a mission designed to address all of these scientific questions and design objectives. We will describe instrument selection, launch dates and mission timetables, measurement and encounter strategies, impactor design and benefits, data acquisition and communication tradeoffs and provide background into the mission science goals. Furthermore, cost estimates and a work breakdown will be provided to prove the practicality 978-1-4244-2622-5/09/25.00 copy2009 IEEE. IEEEAC paper #1634, Version 2, Updated Jan 7, 2009 of meeting all the science objectives within a short period of time. A strategy for the development of our system based upon previously used instruments and hardware will also be presented.
