MR fingerprinting acquisition was performed in 31 patients with untreated intra-axial brain tumors: 17 glioblastomas, 6 World Health Organization grade II lower grade gliomas, and 8 metastases. T1, T2 of the solid tumor, immediate peritumoral white matter, and contralateral white matter were summarized within each ROI. Statistical comparisons on mean, SD, skewness, and kurtosis were performed by using the univariate Wilcoxon rank sum test across various tumor types. Bonferroni correction was used to correct for multiple-comparison testing. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was performed for discrimination between glioblastomas and metastases, and area under the receiver operator curve was calculated.
Mean T2 values could differentiate solid tumor regions of lower grade gliomas from metastases (mean, 172 ± 53 ms, and 105 ± 27 ms, respectively;
= .004, significant after Bonferroni correction). The mean T1 of peritumoral white matter surrounding lower grade gliomas differed from peritumoral white matter around glioblastomas (mean, 1066 ± 218 ms, and 1578 ± 331 ms, respectively;
= .004, significant after Bonferroni correction). Logistic regression analysis revealed that the mean T2 of solid tumor offered the best separation between glioblastomas and metastases with an area under the curve of 0.86 (95% CI, 0.69-1.00;
< .0001).
MR fingerprinting allows rapid simultaneous T1 and T2 measurement in brain tumors and surrounding tissues. MR fingerprinting-based relaxometry can identify quantitative differences between solid tumor regions of lower grade gliomas and metastases and between peritumoral regions of glioblastomas and lower grade gliomas.
There is a concerted global effort to digitize biodiversity occurrence data from herbarium and museum collections that together offer an unparalleled archive of life on Earth over the past few ...centuries. The Global Biodiversity Information Facility provides the largest single gateway to these data. Since 2004 it has provided a single point of access to specimen data from databases of biological surveys and collections. Biologists now have rapid access to more than 120 million observations, for use in many biological analyses. We investigate the quality and coverage of data digitally available, from the perspective of a biologist seeking distribution data for spatial analysis on a global scale. We present an example of automatic verification of geographic data using distributions from the International Legume Database and Information Service to test empirically, issues of geographic coverage and accuracy. There are over 1/2 million records covering 31% of all Legume species, and 84% of these records pass geographic validation. These data are not yet a global biodiversity resource for all species, or all countries. A user will encounter many biases and gaps in these data which should be understood before data are used or analyzed. The data are notably deficient in many of the world's biodiversity hotspots. The deficiencies in data coverage can be resolved by an increased application of resources to digitize and publish data throughout these most diverse regions. But in the push to provide ever more data online, we should not forget that consistent data quality is of paramount importance if the data are to be useful in capturing a meaningful picture of life on Earth.
Genome-wide association (GWAS) analyses have identified susceptibility loci for many diseases, but most risk for any complex disorder remains unattributed. There is therefore scope for complementary ...approaches to these data sets. Gene-wide approaches potentially offer additional insights. They might identify association to genes through multiple signals. Also, by providing support for genes rather than single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), they offer an additional opportunity to compare the results across data sets. We have undertaken gene-wide analysis of two GWAS data sets: schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. We performed two forms of analysis, one based on the smallest P-value per gene, the other on a truncated product of P method. For each data set and at a range of statistical thresholds, we observed significantly more SNPs within genes (P(min) for excess<0.001) showing evidence for association than expected whereas this was not true for extragenic SNPs (P(min) for excess>0.1). At a range of thresholds of significance, we also observed substantially more associated genes than expected (P(min) for excess in schizophrenia=1.8 x 10(-8), in bipolar=2.4 x 10(-6)). Moreover, an excess of genes showed evidence for association across disorders. Among those genes surpassing thresholds highly enriched for true association, we observed evidence for association to genes reported in other GWAS data sets (CACNA1C) or to closely related family members of those genes including CSF2RB, CACNA1B and DGKI. Our analyses show that association signals are enriched in and around genes, large numbers of genes contribute to both disorders and gene-wide analyses offer useful complementary approaches to more standard methods.
Intentional islanding of a power system can be an emergency response for isolating failures that might propagate and lead to major disturbances. Some of the islanding techniques suggested previously ...do not consider the power flow model; others are designed to minimize load shedding only within the islands. Often these techniques are computationally expensive. We aim to find approaches to partition power grids into islands to minimize the load shedding not only in the region where the failures start, but also in the topological complement of the region. We propose a new constraint programming formulation for optimal islanding in power grid networks. This technique works efficiently for small networks but becomes expensive as size increases. To address the scalability problem, we propose two grid partitioning methods based on modularity, properly modified to take into account the power flow model. They are modifications of the Fast Greedy algorithm and the Bloom algorithm, and are polynomial in running time. We tested these methods on the available IEEE test systems. The Bloom type method is faster than the Fast Greedy type, and can potentially provide results in networks with thousands of nodes. Our methods provide solutions which retain at least 40–50% of the system load. Overall, our methods efficiently balance load shedding and scalability.

Background: The fetal cerebellum has been shown to be least affected by external pressures and molding during pregnancy and therefore might provide more accurate estimation of GA. Aims: To study the ...utility of transcerebellar diameter (TCD) measured by ultrasound for the detection of GA in normal and intrauterine growth-retarded (IUGR) fetuses. Subjects and Methods: This cross-sectional study comprised 500 antenatal patients with a GA between 14 and 39 weeks and who were certain of their last menstrual periods. The TCD was measured ultrasonographically and the corresponding GA was determined. The GA was also determined with other customarily used sonographic parameters such as biparietal diameter (BPD), head circumference (HC), abdominal circumference (AC), and femur length (FL) and compared with TCD. Data of normal pregnancy patients was used to formulate nomograms by taking the 5th, 50th, and 95th percentile measurements. TCD to AC ratio was also calculated in both normal (n = 424) and IUGR pregnancies (n = 76). Results: TCD showed significant correlation with gestational age (GA) measured by last menstrual period (LMP) as well as with GA calculated with other biometric fetal parameters. TCD also showed significant correlation with GA in normal (R2 = 0.979) as well as with IUGR pregnancies (R2 = 0.942). TCD to AC ratio remained fairly constant in normal pregnancies while it was increased in IUGR pregnancies. Conclusions: TCD and TCD/AC ratio can be employed as an objective parameter to establish the GA in normal as well as IUGR pregnancy cases.
Load shedding has always been a commonly adopted method in emergency situations to maintain power system reliability. Several load-reduction strategies have been suggested in the past, but most are ...complex and not scalable. This article proposes and thoroughly investigates three load-shedding strategies to prevent cascading failures in the power grid. The first strategy is a baseline case called the homogeneous load-shedding strategy. It homogeneously reduces load in all of the buses of the system. This strategy is extremely simple and fast, and these properties motivate its use in some specific scenarios in spite of its inefficiencies. Next, to accurately find the location and amount of load shedding, a polynomial complexity optimization formulation is proposed, which is much more efficient in overall load shedding in the system. A novel tree heuristic is proposed to overcome the drawbacks of the optimization, namely fairness and scalability. The tree heuristic is linear and very simple to implement. In general, it gives close to optimal results. The results of the tree strategy are compared with that of another existing heuristic, and it is found that the tree performs equal to or better than the existing heuristic for all cases.
We study the process of graphene growth on Cu and Ni substrates subjected to rapid heating (approximately 8 °C/s) and cooling cycles (approximately 10 °C/s) in a modified atmospheric pressure ...chemical vapor deposition furnace. Electron microscopy followed by Raman spectroscopy demonstrated successful synthesis of large-area few-layer graphene (FLG) films on both Cu and Ni substrates. The overall synthesis time was less than 30 min. Further, the as-synthesized films were directly utilized as anode material and their electrochemical behavior was studied in a lithium half-cell configuration. FLG on Cu (Cu-G) showed reduced lithium-intercalation capacity when compared with SLG, BLG and Bare-Cu suggesting its substrate protective nature (barrier to Li-ions). Although graphene films on Ni (Ni-G) showed better Li-cycling ability similar to that of other carbons suggesting that the presence of graphene edge planes (typical of Ni-G) is important in effective uptake and release of Li-ions in these materials.
