As described in many farmland birds of Europe, habitat loss is one of the main factors explaining the decline of the European turtle dove (Streptopelia turtur), a migratory columbid which breeds in the Western Palaearctic and winters in Africa. In the countries belonging to the western flyway (which host around 40–50% of the European breeding population), the species was hunted before the implementation of a moratorium in recent years, and it is known that habitat management is conducted to favour game and wildlife. Through a questionnaire we investigated the habitat management conducted in hunting grounds of France, Portugal and Spain (931 respondents), and the measures that may favour turtle doves. The vast majority of respondents were totally or partially in charge of game management (98%), but less than 50% were responsible for decisions regarding farming or forestry. The most frequent measures were supplementary food (73% of respondents), water provision (68%), forest management (50%) and agricultural management (47%). Land interventions were conducted in a high proportion of grounds, but at limited scale (<50 ha/hunting ground). In most cases, the management was self-funded by hunters and game managers. Habitat management measures were rarely targeted exclusively to the turtle dove; interventions were, in contrast, frequently part of management targeting various species simultaneously. Grounds with a tradition of higher number of hunted doves were those more likely to target the species in their management. The likelihood of implementing management tools was mainly linked to variations in hunting pressure rather than to perceptions of turtle dove population trends. As the turtle dove is favoured by the ecotone between woodland and farmland, it is crucial to promote and reward measures beyond food and water provision, involving agricultural and forest management, ideally accompanied by species’ monitoring in hunting grounds. As the current Adaptive Harvest Management Framework promoted by the European Union aims to link hunting opportunities with habitat enhancements, hunting grounds could be crucial to improve turtle dove habitats at large scale and help reversing current population trends.
On commercial scale, blue agave plantations (Agave tequilana Weber var. azul) have required large extensions of land to meet market demands, planted as extensive monocultures to produce the raw material for tequila production. In the Sierra de Amula region, Jalisco, the blue agave is planted in several types of soil and slope inclinations (3 to >45%), in addition to the trace of furrows in favor the slope, suggests an increase in erosive rates of the soil and water. In Autlan de Navarro, Jalisco. That practice has modified the use of the land, rainfed agriculture and substantial changes in traditional agricultural activities, that due to ignorance its management. Farmers independent of the agave-tequila companies, plant this crop by imitation with minimal or no technical advice. The objective of the study was to reveal the effect of traditional crop management of blue agave on soil loss, compared to the implementation of sustainable practices (conservation tillage and cover crops) as an alternative to soil conservation during the rainy cycle. The sampling unit was runoff lots (2 m by 5 m). The average annual rainfall of the municipality was 631.5 mm, in traditional management it generated 1531.9 m3 ha-1 of surface runoff and soil loss of 21.3 t ha-1, this mean 74% and 96% respectively, higher in relation to conservation tillage, but similar in relation to the cover crop in relation to runoff (higher with 4%) but lower in soil loss (32%). In conclusion, it is identified that traditional crop management intensifies soil and water degradation, a direct effect of applying broad-spectrum herbicides, in addition to the trace of the furrow in favor of the slope.
Orange-fronted Parakeets Aratinga canicularis are widespread and common across their range. However, the ecology and habitat use are scarcely known. Observations of the nest site characteristics, ...diet, flock size, habitat movements, and local harvesting practices are reported in this study for Colima, Mexico, a site where the species occurs year-round. Characteristics of termitaria nest sites in deciduous oak and tropical semi-deciduous forests were compared. Nesting site selection did not differ between vegetation types, but some preference for higher and larger termitaria is suggested. Availability of suitable nesting sites is apparently not a limiting factor. Anecdotal reports from the local people and empirical observations of eggs and hatchlings by the author suggest a three-month extension of the breeding period to what is reported in the literature. A. canicularis was observed foraging on 25 plant species. Flock size and activity increased during the rainy season, and were reduced during the beginning of the dry season. Observations and movement in semi-deciduous vegetation were common throughout the study, coinciding with the presence of constant although scattered fruit availability. People in the community see the harvesting and selling of parakeets as an additional source of income, in particular during the dry season when agricultural-related income activities are at their minimum. However, the associated mortality and nest-site destruction may pose a threat to the species in this region.
Abstract 4881
The current gold standard treatment for follicular lymphoma (FL) consists in the association of rituximab, that is an anti-CD20 monoclonal antibody (mAb), and one among many possible ...chemotherapy regimens, followed by maintenance with the same mAb. However, LF is still considered incurable. Hence, it is necessary to keep investigating new strategies aiming at improving the overall clinical results.
As an anti-tumor mechanism, antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity (ADCC) depends on both the immune system effector arm and the antibody structure. The culture of peripheral blood lymphocytes with IL-2 activates killer cell subpopulations (LAK cells), mainly consisting of natural killer (NK) cells and cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL), both with significant cytotoxic capacity. The combination of LAK cells with a mAb could achieve a synergistic effect by enhancing ADCC and potentially achieving clinical efficacy. As structural modifications in mABs may alter their biological activity, new anti-CD20 with structural changes in the Fc portion of the immunoglobulin have been synthesized in order to obtain a greater therapeutic effect. GA101 is a new anti-CD20 mAB that binds with higher affinity to the CD20 type II epitope, increasing the ADCC effect as compared to to rituximab. Currently, no data support the notion of a possible synergistic effect of GA101 and LAK cells.
The objective of this work was to assess the cytotoxic capacity of LAK cells generated from the peripheral blood of patients with FL. In addition, we aimed at ascertaining whether the combination of rituximab and LAK could improve the functional activity of LAK alone. Finally, we conducted a comparative study of two anti-CD20 antibodies structurally different, namely rituximab and GA101, used in combination with LAK cells.
LAK cells were expanded in vitro from 39 peripheral blood samples of patients with FL. Cytotoxicity studies were performed using chromium release assays in which LAK cells targeted K562 (as NK target), Daudi (as LAK cells target) and CRL-1596 (CD20 positive) cells. Overall, mononuclear cells were isolated and basal cytotoxicity was measured in 39 peripheral blood samples from patients with FL. The ability of two anti-CD20 antibody (rituximab and GA101) to enhance LAK cell activity was evaluated against the CRL-1596 cell line. As a control, an irrelevant antibody (cetuximab) was used. To perform these studies, target cells were incubated with effector cells and antibody at 10 mg/ml concentration.
Results are expressed as mean percentages. Basal cytotoxicity against K562, Daudi and CRL-1596 cells was 19.4%, 11.9% and 1.5% respectively. After culture with IL-2, the cytotoxicity activity against the same cell lines was reassessed and in all cases a statistically significant increase was observed (p<0,05). In particular, cytotoxicity against K562, Daudi and CRL-1596 was 39.5%, 39.6% and 21.1%, respectively.
Furthermore, we studied the rituximab effect on the cytotoxic capacity against CRL-1596. The observed cytotoxicity of LAK cells with rituximab was 39.9% vs 23.6% for LAK cells alone (p<0,001). In parallel, the GA101 effect on the cytotoxic capacity against CRL-1596 was also evaluated. The cytotoxicity of LAK cells with GA101 was 52.3% vs 23.6% for LAK cells alone (p<0,001). Vice versa, no difference was observed in the cytotoxic activity of LAK cells against CRL1596 cell line when the effector cells were incubated with the irrelevant antibody cetuximab (26.0% vs 23.6%).
Finally, when comparing the ability of both anti-CD20 antibodies to enhance ADCC, we observed a significant difference in favor of GA101 (GA101: 52.3%, rituximab: 39.9%; p<0,001).
LAK cells generated from peripheral blood lymphocytes by culture with IL-2 in patients with LF show a higher cytotoxic activity than naive lymphocytes. The observed cytotoxic capacity of these LAK cells against a CD20 positive cell line (CRL-1596) is enhanced by the addition of anti-CD20 mAbs. Interestingly, GA101 was consistently more effective than rituximab in enhancing the cytotoxic capacity of LAK cells.

Mexico has a high amphibian diversity (360 species), but several regions of the country remain relatively poorly studied. We document the anuran fauna for the Marabasco River Basin, in Jalisco and ...Colima, Mexico. Between June and November 2012, we collected 13 species of anurans from 3 sites in the Marabasco, including Lithobates pustulosus, L. forreri, and L. neovolcanicus, which are all species with conservation priority. The anuran community of the Marabasco Basin could be threatened by mining activities and other anthropogenic activities. This is the first published report on the anuran community composition for this basin.
