In the multimedia device management system, because can be applied to reading information from the tags and also to communicating with the database server through the GPRS network, the RFID (Radio ...Frequency Identification) technology is superior to the currently widespread automatic identification (Auto-ID) technology of the barcode, so which can provide further benefits. On the basis of applying the RFID technology to the management of multimedia devices, we design a RFID-based multimedia devices management system.
The first crystal structure of a birnavirus polymerase, IBDV VP1, has been determined at 2.5 Å resolution by multiple isomorphous replacement and anomalous scattering (MIR-AS). The VP1 structure ...reveals several highly unusual features. By adopting a novel topology in the polymerase palm subdomain, VP1 is able to bring several functional motifs into spatial proximity to form a complete polymerase active site, despite the permutaion of sequence. By modeling initiation and elongation complexes onto the VP1 structure, important structural features are demonstrated and insights into the functions of the birnavirus self-guanylylation and protein-primed RNA synthesis are presented. Both self-guanylylation and nucleotide polymerization activities of VP1 are explored using various biochemical approaches; and based on the combination these findings and site-directed mutagenesis, speculations about the mechanisms of the self-guanylylation active site and the unusual polymerase active site are presented. Moreover, the VP1 structure lends further support for the evolutionary relationship between dsRNA and +ssRNA viruses. Progress in crystallographic and functional studies on other birnavirus polymerases and various functional complexes are also provided for the future direction of further investigation on the structural basis of the protein-priming mechanism by birnavirus VP1.

We explore by design and implementation the applicability of J2EE (Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition) architecture in supporting wireless services as well as web-based services. This has been ...demonstrated by implementing a wireless prescription system, which provides wireless services to physicians, and web-based services to pharmacies and administrators. The goal of the wireless prescription system is to improve the efficiency of the healthcare system by reducing the overall time and cost used to create documents and retrieve information. We also present a performance evaluation of the implemented wireless prescription system using latency as the performance metric. In particular, we investigated the overheads associated with different components of the underlying J2EE architecture, which includes the Session Bean, Entity Bean, and the database. We found that the latency overheads introduced by these components account for 3.8–4.3%, 3.9–4.4%, and 91.8% of the total delay experienced inside the J2EE architecture respectively.

Purpose We determined the characteristics of Chinese men undergoing initial prostate biopsy and evaluated the relationship between prostate specific antigen levels and prostate cancer/high grade ...prostate cancer detection in a large Chinese multicenter cohort. Materials and Methods This retrospective study included 13,904 urology outpatients who had undergone biopsy for the indications of prostate specific antigen greater than 4.0 ng/ml or prostate specific antigen less than 4.0 ng/ml but with abnormal digital rectal examination results. The prostate specific antigen measurements were performed in accordance with the standard procedures at the respective institutions. The type of assay used was documented and recalibrated to the WHO standard. Results The incidence of prostate cancer and high grade prostate cancer was lower in the Chinese cohort than the Western cohorts at any given prostate specific antigen level. Around 25% of patients with a prostate specific antigen of 4.0 to 10.0 ng/ml were found to have prostate cancer compared to approximately 40% in U.S. clinical practice. Moreover, the risk curves were generally flatter than those of the Western cohorts, that is risk did not increase as rapidly with higher prostate specific antigen. Conclusions The relationship between prostate specific antigen and prostate cancer risk differs importantly between Chinese and Western populations, with an overall lower risk in the Chinese cohort. Further research should explore whether environmental or genetic differences explain these findings or whether they result from unmeasured differences in screening or benign prostate disease. Caution is required for the implementation of prostate cancer clinical decision rules or prediction models for men in China or other Asian countries with similar genetic and environmental backgrounds.
