Both endoscopic obturation and transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunts (TIPSs) have proven to be effective in preventing rebleeding from gastric varices. This study compared the efficacy and ...complications of these modalities.
Cirrhotic patients with acute bleeding from gastric varices were considered for inclusion. After initial control, eligible patients were randomly allocated to two groups: TIPS (n = 35) and obturation using cyanoacrylate (n = 37). In the cyanoacrylate group, treatment was repeated regularly until gastric varices were obliterated. Patients of both groups received regular follow-up. The end points were gastric variceal rebleeding or death.
Stent shunt insertion was successful in all TIPS patients, and mean portal pressure gradient decreased from 21.4 +/- 7.5 mm Hg to 7.5 +/- 3.5 mm Hg ( P < 0.001). Variceal obliteration was achieved in 19 patients in the cyanoacrylate group (51 %) compared with seven TIPS patients (20 %) ( P < 0.02). After a median follow up of 33 months, upper gastrointestinal bleeding occurred in 15 TIPS patients (43 %) and 22 cyanoacrylate patients (59 %) ( P = 0.12). Rebleeding from gastric varices was encountered in four TIPS patients (11 %) and 14 cyanoacrylate patients (38 %) ( P = 0.014; odds ratio 3.6, 95 %CI 1.2 - 11.1). Blood transfusion requirements were lower in the TIPS group than in the cyanoacrylate group ( P < 0.01). Survival and frequency of complications were similar in both groups.
TIPS proved more effective than glue injection in preventing rebleeding from gastric varices, with similar survival and frequency of complications.

A Nationwide Nitrogen Deposition Monitoring Network (NNDMN) containing 43 monitoring sites was established in China to measure gaseous NH3, NO2, and HNO3 and particulate NH4+ and NO3− in air and/or ...precipitation from 2010 to 2014. Wet/bulk deposition fluxes of Nr species were collected by precipitation gauge method and measured by continuous-flow analyzer; dry deposition fluxes were estimated using airborne concentration measurements and inferential models. Our observations reveal large spatial variations of atmospheric Nr concentrations and dry and wet/bulk Nr deposition. On a national basis, the annual average concentrations (1.3–47.0 μg N m−3) and dry plus wet/bulk deposition fluxes (2.9–83.3 kg N ha−1 yr−1) of inorganic Nr species are ranked by land use as urban > rural > background sites and by regions as north China > southeast China > southwest China > northeast China > northwest China > Tibetan Plateau, reflecting the impact of anthropogenic Nr emission. Average dry and wet/bulk N deposition fluxes were 20.6 ± 11.2 (mean ± standard deviation) and 19.3 ± 9.2 kg N ha−1 yr−1 across China, with reduced N deposition dominating both dry and wet/bulk deposition. Our results suggest atmospheric dry N deposition is equally important to wet/bulk N deposition at the national scale. Therefore, both deposition forms should be included when considering the impacts of N deposition on environment and ecosystem health.
Different MR imaging patterns of cerebral fat embolism have been reported in the literature without a systematic review. Our goal was to describe the patterns, explore the relationship between ...disease course and the imaging patterns, and discuss the underlying mechanism. We reveal 5 distinctive MR imaging patterns: 1) scattered embolic ischemia occurring dominantly at the acute stage; 2) confluent symmetric cytotoxic edema located at the cerebral white matter, which mainly occurs at the subacute stage; 3) vasogenic edematous lesions also occurring at the subacute stage; 4) petechial hemorrhage, which persists from the acute to the chronic stage; and 5) chronic sequelae, occurring at late stage, including cerebral atrophy, demyelinating change, and sequelae of infarction or necrosis. Underlying mechanisms of these imaging patterns are further discussed. Recognition of the 5 evolving MR imaging patterns of cerebral fat embolism may result in adjustment of the appropriate management and improve the outcome.
We present spectroscopic observations of the host galaxies of 82 low-redshift Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) discovered by the Palomar Transient Factory. We determine star formation rates, ...gas-phase/stellar metallicities, and stellar masses and ages of these objects. As expected, strong correlations between the SN Ia light-curve width (stretch) and the host age/mass/metallicity are found: fainter, faster declining events tend to be hosted by older/massive/metal-rich galaxies. There is some evidence that redder SNe Ia explode in higher metallicity galaxies, but we found no relation between the SN colour and host galaxy extinction based on the Balmer decrement, suggesting that the colour variation of these SNe does not primarily arise from this source. SNe Ia in higher mass/metallicity galaxies also appear brighter after stretch/colour corrections than their counterparts in lower mass hosts, and the stronger correlation is with gas-phase metallicity suggesting this may be the more important variable. We also compared the host stellar mass distribution to that in galaxy-targeted SN surveys and the high-redshift untargeted Supernova Legacy Survey (SNLS). SNLS has many more low-mass galaxies, while the targeted searches have fewer. This can be explained by an evolution in the galaxy stellar mass function, coupled with an SN delay-time distribution proportional to t
−1. Finally, we found no significant difference in the mass–metallicity relation of our SN Ia hosts compared to field galaxies, suggesting any metallicity effect on the SN Ia rate is small.
The 3D printed bulk samples fabricated by selective laser melting (SLM) of the additive manufacturing technique are usually considered to be 3D isotropic in microstructures and mechanical responses. ...This study systematically investigates the anisotropic responses in terms of hardness and electrochemical resistance for the X-, Y- and Z-planes of the SLM Ti-6Al-4V bulk samples fabricated with the zigzag laser path strategy. Results show that all SLM planes exhibit no significant difference in Young's modulus compared to the mechanically rolled plate. However, the X-plane, referred to the cross-sectional plane perpendicular to the laser moving direction, is found ~20% lower hardness and the lowest corrosion resistance compared to the Y- and Z-planes. The underlying reasoning is researched and discussed. The microstructure observations indicate that artifact holes are induced in the X-plane due to un-uniform laser intensity distribution between two neighboring printing lines. Alternatively, the Y- and Z-planes exhibit dense morphology due to multiple heating while zigzag scanning. Experimental results also indicate that the SLM materials exhibit higher corrosion resistance than the commercial rolled materials.
Aim
To identify and characterize novel bacteriocins from Weissella hellenica 4‐7.
Methods and Results
Weissella hellenica 4‐7, isolated from the traditional Taiwanese fermented food sian‐sianzih ...(fermented clams), was previously found to produce a bacteriocin active against Listeria monocytogenes and some other Gram‐positive bacteria. Bacteriocin activity decreased slightly after autoclaving (121°C for 15 min), but was inactivated by protease K and trypsin. Mass spectrometry analysis revealed the bacteriocin mass to be approximately 3205·6 Da. N‐terminal amino acid sequencing yielded a partial sequence, NH2‐KGFLSWASKATSWLVGP, by Edman degradation. The obtained partial sequence showed high homology with leucocin B‐TA33a; however, at least two different residues were observed. No identical peptide or protein was found, and this peptide was therefore considered to be a novel bacteriocin produced by W. hellenica 4‐7 and termed weissellicin L.
Conclusions
The findings obtained in the current study suggest a novel bacteriocin produced by W. hellenica 4‐7.
Significance and Impact of the Study
Bacteriocins from Weissella remain rare, and this study is the second report of a bacteriocin produced by W. hellenica.
Abstract Robustness is the reproducible development of a phenotype despite stochastic noise. It often involves tradeoffs with other performance metrics, but the mechanisms underlying such tradeoffs ...were largely unknown. An Arabidopsis flower robustly develops four sepals from four precisely positioned auxin maxima. The development related myb-like 1 ( drmy1) mutant generates noise in auxin signaling that disrupts robustness in sepal initiation. Here, we find that increased expression of CUP-SHAPED COTYLEDON1 ( CUC1 ), a boundary specification transcription factor, in drmy1 underlies this loss of robustness. CUC1 surrounds and amplifies stochastic auxin noise in drmy1 to form variably positioned auxin maxima and sepal primordia. Removing CUC1 from drmy1 provides time for noisy auxin signaling to resolve into four precisely positioned auxin maxima, restoring robust sepal initiation. However, removing CUC1 decreases the intensity of auxin maxima and slows down sepal initiation. Thus, CUC1 increases morphogenesis speed but impairs robustness against auxin noise. Further, using a computational model, we find that the observed phenotype can be explained by the effect of CUC1 in repolarizing PIN FORMED1 (PIN1), a polar auxin transporter. Lastly, our model predicts that reducing global growth rate improves developmental robustness, which we validate experimentally. Thus, our study illustrates a tradeoff between speed and robustness during development.
