There are several techniques for current measurement. Most of them are capable of measuring both alternating and direct current (AC/DC) components. However, they have severe drawbacks for rotating ...applications (large size, sensitivity to external fields, and low signal amplitude). In addition to these weaknesses, measured signals should be transmitted to a stationary part. In order to contribute solving these difficulties, this paper presents a sensor that can measure AC/DC simultaneously based on the electromagnetic coupling of two coils. To this aim, the measured waveform is analysed. In this paper, the design of such a sensor is presented. This design is validated through computer simulations and a prototype is built. The performance of this sensor prototype is analysed through experimental tests.
Emerging viral infections of the nervous system represent a major global public health concern in the 21st century. They are caused primarily by RNA viruses and are mostly associated with acute or ...subacute encephalitis. The spectrum of associated central or peripheral nervous system disorders is broad, and results either from a direct viral effect or due to the host immune responses against the infection. Emerging viral infections impose substantial neurological morbidity and mortality, particularly in low- and middle-income regions. In the past five decades, vector-borne viruses primarily transmitted by arthropods, or arboviruses, have been responsible for epidemics with a high burden of neurological disease, like the 2015-2016 Zika virus epidemic in the Americas. Viruses that have become neurovirulent for humans after geographical expansion include West Nile, Dengue, and Zika viruses. Factors such as animal migration, disruption of ecological niches, and cross-species contact have caused old viruses to reappear and cause neurological disease, as is the case of Ebola virus. In addition to these biological challenges, current preventive strategies, vaccination, and diagnostic and therapeutic approaches remain limited. We review the clinical-virological features and global impact of the most relevant emerging viral infections of the nervous system as they are projected over the 21st century.
Nitride coatings are increasingly demanded in the cutting- and machining-tool industry owing to their hardness, thermal stability and resistance to corrosion. These properties derive from strongly ...covalent bonds; understanding the bonding is a requirement for the design of superhard materials with improved capabilities. Here, we report a pressure-induced cubic-to-orthorhombic transition at approximately 1 GPa in CrN. High-pressure X-ray diffraction and ab initio calculations show an unexpected reduction of the bulk modulus, K0, of about 25% in the high-pressure (lower volume) phase. Our combined theoretical and experimental approach shows that this effect is the result of a large exchange striction due to the approach of the localized Cr:t3 electrons to becoming molecular-orbital electrons in Cr-Cr bonds. The softening of CrN under pressure is a manifestation of a strong competition between different types of chemical bond that are found at a crossover from a localized to a molecular-orbital electronic transition.
Acute flaccid myelitis (AFM) presents with acute onset of flaccid paralysis with involvement of the gray matter on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the spinal cord. Studies have reported brain MRI ...abnormalities, but the characteristics have not been fully defined. In this multicenter study, we assessed the acute features and evolution of brain MRI abnormalities in AFM.
We reviewed brain MRIs of patients with AFM who presented to four referral hospitals between 2012 and 2018. Cases met established criteria for AFM. We analyzed the initial and follow-up brain MRIs. Areas were divided into supratentorial, infratentorial, and subdivisions within those regions.
A total of 66 patients were included. Brain MRI abnormalities were present in 34 (52%). Infratentorial abnormalities were more common, occurring in 33 (97%) cases with the dorsal pons being the most frequently affected area (88%). Abnormalities were also present in the medulla (74%), cerebellum (41%), and midbrain (38%). Nine subjects (26%) exhibited both supratentorial and infratentorial abnormalities, whereas isolated supratentorial changes were present in only one (3%). Contrast-enhancing abnormalities were encountered in 9% of cases and meningeal involvement in 6%. On follow-up, most abnormalities, 20 of 24 (83%), were stable, improving, or had resolved.
Brain MRI abnormalities occur in about half of the cases of AFM and commonly resolve with time. Dorsal pontine involvement is a characteristic MRI feature, whereas isolated supratentorial abnormalities are rare. Clinicians should consider that brain imaging abnormalities do not exclude a diagnosis of AFM in patients with typical presentations.
Abstract Background Context Cowden syndrome is an autosomal dominant syndrome characterized by multiple hamartomas and an increased cancer risk. It is associated with mutations in the phosphatase and ...tensin homolog (PTEN) gene that encodes a tumor suppressant phosphatase. Purpose To report an unusual case of multiple spinal epidural arteriovenous fistulas in a patient diagnosed with Cowden syndrome. Study Design Case report Patient Sample A 57-year-old woman Methods We report the case of a 57-year-old woman with a history of multiple cancers with acute exacerbation of lower extremity weakness and numbness that had progressed over a month. Results MRI showed abnormal signal in the thoracolumbar spinal cord with enhancement after contrast administration. A spinal angiogram confirmed the presence of multiple spinal epidural arteriovenous fistulas. Genetic testing confirmed the diagnosis of Cowden syndrome with a mutation in intron 3 of the PTEN gene. Conclusions Spinal vascular malformations occur in patients with Cowden syndrome, they can be multifocal and locally aggressive. It is important to raise the suspicion of Cowden syndrome in patients with spinal cord vascular anomalies and a history of multiple cancers, as the correct genetic diagnosis may have implications for management and cancer screening.

This was a retrospective study in patients younger than 18 years of age with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and cancer diagnoses between April and September 2020. Demographic variables, laboratory, and radiologic findings and complications of each case were identified. A descriptive analysis was performed.
A total of 33 patients were identified; the median age was 10 years. Fifteen patients (42%) were in chemotherapy at the time of the infection diagnosis, in two patients the chemotherapy protocol was permanently suspended. The most common symptom was fever in 20 patients (60%). Seven patients (21.2%) showed mild pneumonia, four patients (12.1%) severe pneumonia, and three cases (9.0%) were classified as critical. In the evaluated cohort, five patients (15.1%) died, and in two of those, death was caused by COVID-19 infection.
Children with an oncologic disease, the search for COVID cases should be oriented to patients with fever, including febrile neutropenia, the presence of respiratory symptoms, and the search for epidemiologic contact. A higher frequency of complications and mortality attributed to COVID-19, two in pediatric oncohematologic patients was found. Institutional strategies to detect the infection early and lower institutional infection are indicated.
Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) is a frequent neurological complication in immunosuppressed patients. PML is caused by the JC virus (JCV), a neurotropic DNA polyomavirus that infects ...oligodendrocytes and astrocytes, causing inflammation and demyelination which lead to neurological dysfunction. The pathogenesis of PML is poorly understood due to the lack of in vitro or animal models to study mechanisms of disease as the virus most efficiently infects only human cells. We developed a human-derived brain organotypic system (also called brain organoid) to model JCV infection. The model was developed by using human-induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC) and culturing them in 3D to generate an organotypic model containing neurons, astrocytes, and oligodendrocytes which recapitulates aspects of the environment of the human brain. We infected the brain organoids with the JCV MAD4 strain or cerebrospinal fluid of a patient with PML. The organoids were assessed for evidence of infection by qPCR, immunofluorescence, and electron microscopy at 1, 2, and 3 weeks post-exposure. JCV infection in both JCV MAD4 strain and PML CSF-exposed brain organoids was confirmed by immunocytochemical studies demonstrating viral antigens and electron microscopy showing virion particles in the nuclear compartment of oligodendrocytes and astrocytes. No evidence of neuronal infection was visualized. Infection was also demonstrated by JCV qPCR in the virus-exposed organoids and their media. In conclusion, the brain organoid model of JCV infection establishes a human model suitable for studying the mechanisms of JCV infection and pathogenesis of PML and may facilitate the exploration of therapeutic approaches.

Methods
We studied resting-state glucose metabolism in eight PD patients before and after unilateral MRgFUS-subthalamotomy using hybrid

FFDG-PET/MR imaging. We used statistical nonparametric mapping (SnPM) to study regional metabolic changes following this treatment and also quantified whole-brain treatment-related changes in the expression of a spatial covariance-based Parkinson’s disease–related metabolic brain pattern (PDRP). Modulation of regional and network activity was correlated with clinical improvement as measured by changes in Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale (MDS-UPDRS) motor scores.
Results
After subthalamotomy, there was a significant reduction in FDG uptake in the subthalamic region, globus pallidus internus, motor and premotor cortical regions, and cingulate gyrus in the treated hemisphere, and the contralateral cerebellum (
p
< 0.001). Diffuse metabolic increase was found in the posterior parietal and occipital areas. Treatment also resulted in a significant decline in PDRP expression (
p
< 0.05), which correlated with clinical improvement in UPDRS motor scores (rho = 0.760;
p
= 0.002).
Conclusions
MRgFUS-subthalamotomy induced metabolic alterations in distributed nodes of the motor, associative, and limbic circuits. Clinical improvement was associated with reduction in the PDRP expression. This treatment-induced modulation of the metabolic network is likely to mediate the clinical benefit achieved following MRgFUS-subthalamotomy.
