Gut microbiota and their fermentative products, short chain fatty acids (SCFA), which have recently been highlighted as metabolic regulators, are thought to mediate the function of dietary complex carbohydrates and bowel health. We discuss the influence of various polysaccharides on human bowel health and the mechanisms underlying these effects. We also describe their biological effects on intestinal health and the mechanisms underlying their activity; the polysaccharides were divided into three categories: dietary, microbial, and host-derived polysaccharides. Physiological impacts of non-starch polysaccharides (NSPs) and resistant starch (RS), both of which pass through the small intestine nearly intact and can be fermented by gut microbiota in the large intestine, are similar to each other. They exert a wide range of beneficial effects including anti-inflammation, gut epithelial barrier protection, and immune modulation through both microbiota-dependent and -independent mechanisms. Bacterial polysaccharides usually found in the cell wall generally act as immune modulators, and host-derived polysaccharides not only protect host cells from pathogenic microbial neighbors but also affect overall intestinal health via interactions with gut microbes. Considering these observations, further studies on polysaccharides will be important for bowel health.
Background
With improved short-term surgical outcomes, laparoscopic distal gastrectomy has rapidly gained popularity. However, the safety and feasibility of laparoscopic total gastrectomy (LTG) has ...not yet been proven due to the difficulty of the technique. This single-arm prospective multi-center study was conducted to evaluate the use of LTG for clinical stage I gastric cancer.
Methods
Between October 2012 and January 2014, 170 patients with pathologically proven, clinical stage I gastric adenocarcinoma located at the proximal stomach were enrolled. Twenty-two experienced surgeons from 19 institutions participated in this clinical trial. The primary end point was the incidence of postoperative morbidity and mortality at postoperative 30 days. The severity of postoperative complications was categorized according to Clavien–Dindo classification, and the incidence of postoperative morbidity and mortality was compared with that in a historical control.
Results
Of the enrolled patients, 160 met criteria for inclusion in the full analysis set. Postoperative morbidity and mortality rates reached 20.6% (33/160) and 0.6% (1/160), respectively. Fifteen patients (9.4%) had grade III or higher complications, and three reoperations (1.9%) were performed. The incidence of morbidity after LTG in this trial did not significantly differ from that reported in a previous study for open total gastrectomy (18%).
Conclusions
LTG performed by experienced surgeons showed acceptable postoperative morbidity and mortality for patients with clinical stage I gastric cancer.
High fat diet-induced changes in gut microbiota have been linked to intestinal permeability and metabolic endotoxemia, which is related to metabolic disorders. However, the influence of a ...high-glucose (HGD) or high-fructose (HFrD) diet on gut microbiota is largely unknown. We performed changes of gut microbiota in HGD- or HFrD-fed C57BL/6J mice by 16S rRNA analysis. Gut microbiota-derived endotoxin-induced metabolic disorders were evaluated by glucose and insulin tolerance test, gut permeability, Western blot and histological analysis. We found that the HGD and HFrD groups had comparatively higher blood glucose and endotoxin levels, fat mass, dyslipidemia, and glucose intolerance without changes in bodyweight. The HGD- and HFrD-fed mice lost gut microbial diversity, characterized by a lower proportion of Bacteroidetes and a markedly increased proportion of Proteobacteria. Moreover, the HGD and HFrD groups had increased gut permeability due to alterations to the tight junction proteins caused by gut inflammation. Hepatic inflammation and lipid accumulation were also markedly increased in the HGD and HFrD groups. High levels of glucose or fructose in the diet regulate the gut microbiota and increase intestinal permeability, which precedes the development of metabolic endotoxemia, inflammation, and lipid accumulation, ultimately leading to hepatic steatosis and normal-weight obesity.
Hydrogels are promising as materials for soft actuators because of qualities such as softness, transparency, and responsiveness to stimuli. However, weak and slow actuations remain challenging as a ...result of low modulus and osmosis-driven slow water diffusion, respectively. We used turgor pressure and electroosmosis to realize a strong and fast hydrogel-based actuator. A turgor actuator fabricated with a gel confined by a selectively permeable membrane can retain a high osmotic pressure that drives gel swelling; thus, our actuator exerts large stress 0.73 megapascals (MPa) in 96 minutes (min) with a 1.16 cubic centimeters of hydrogel. With the accelerated water transport caused by electroosmosis, the gel swells rapidly, enhancing the actuation speed (0.79 MPa in 9 min). Our strategies enable a soft hydrogel to break a brick and construct underwater structures within a few minutes.
The gut microbiome is a complex ecosystem of the host body that maintains a balance with its host. In this context, dysbiosis can lead to inflammatory response, immune dysregulation, and various ...metabolic disorders. Dietary polysaccharides mediate gut microbiota and its metabolites related to host health. In this review, we describe the structural characteristics of pectic polysaccharides and the functional correlation between their structure-specific characteristics and the modulatory activity of gut microbiota. We also discuss the health benefits of pectic polysaccharides on diet-induced obesity and intestinal health based on their source and structure. By regulating gut microbiota, pectic polysaccharides exert a wide range of biological effects, including the inhibition of obesity, fatty liver disease, and inflammation, and the increase in gut barrier function and immune-enhancing activity. This review expected to serve as a valuable resource to further clarity the relationship between pectic polysaccharides and gut microbiota.

Gellan gum (GG) is an anionic polysaccharide used as an additive in the food industry. However, the effect of GG on gut microbiota regulation and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has not yet been investigated. In vitro fermentation experiments have demonstrated that GG promoted the growth of probiotic strains such as Lactiplantibacillus rhamnosus and Bifidobacterium bifidum, producing metabolites beneficial to gut health. In mice, GG reduced hepatic triglyceride content, serum biomarkers, and body fat mass and weight gain induced by a high fat diet. Additionally, GG regulated the gut microbiota including Desulfovibrionales, Deferribacterales, Bacteroidales, and Lactobacillales at the order level and also promoted short-chain fatty acid production. Moreover, GG improved the expression of proteins related to hepatic inflammation and lipid metabolism. Taken together, GG ameliorated NAFLD, possibly by acting on the gut–liver axis via improving the gut health, indicating its potential as a food supplement and/or prebiotic against NAFLD.
Although the prevalence of metabolic disorders has progressively increased over the past few decades, metabolic disorders can only be effectively treated with calorie restriction and improved ...physical activity. Recent research has focused on altering the gut microbiome using prebiotics, probiotics, and postbiotics because various metabolic syndromes are caused by gut microbial dysbiosis. Postbiotics, substances produced or released by microorganism metabolic activities, play an important role in maintaining and restoring host health. Because postbiotics have a small amount of literature on their consumption, there is a need for more experiments on short- and long-term intake. This review discusses current postbiotic research, categories of postbiotics, positive roles in metabolic syndromes, and potential therapeutic applications. It covers postbiotic pleiotropic benefits, such as anti-obesity, anti-diabetic, and anti-hypertensive qualities, that could aid in the management of metabolic disorders. Postbiotics are promising tools for developing health benefits and therapeutic goals owing to their clinical, technical, and economic properties. Postbiotic use is attractive for altering the microbiota; however, further studies are needed to determine efficacy and safety.
Hydrogen is regarded as an ideal fuel for vehicle applications owing to its high chemical energy. However, for on-board energy storage, fuel cell electric vehicles need compact, light, and affordable ...hydrogen storage system to replace the pressurized hydrogen tanks. In this regard, various materials and composites have been developed for denser and safer hydrogen storage. Among them, Mg is considered as a highly promising material to store the hydrogen in terms of gravimetric and volumetric capacity. However, because of its higher thermodynamic stability and sluggish hydrogen sorption kinetics, the sorption temperature is high and the sorption time is long, limiting for practical usage. Nanoscale material designs with various dimensionalities that have been extensively studied and used in countless research and development sectors, which can provide new strategies to tackle the limitations of Mg based hydrogen storage system. This review describes the fundamental properties, preparation, activation kinetics and thermodynamic stability of various nanostructured Mg/MgH2 materials (including bulk particles, nanofilms, nanowires and nanoparticles confined in nanoporous carbon structures and encapsulated by polymers) for feasible hydrogen storage applications, and summarizes their dimensional effects.
