The origin of Galactic cosmic rays is a century-long puzzle. Indirect evidence points to their acceleration by supernova Shockwaves, but we know little of their escape from the shock and their ...evolution through the turbulent medium surrounding massive stars. Gamma rays can probe their spreading through the ambient gas and radiation fields. The Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) has observed the star-forming region of Cygnus X. The 1-to 100-gigaelectronvolt images reveal a 50-parsec-wide cocoon of freshly accelerated cosmic rays that flood the cavities carved by the stellar winds and ionization fronts from young stellar clusters. It provides an example to study the youth of cosmic rays in a superbubble environment before they merge into the older Galactic population.
Toxoplasma gondii is among the most prevalent parasites worldwide, infecting many wild and domestic animals and causing zoonotic infections in humans. T. gondii differs substantially in its broad ...distribution from closely related parasites that typically have narrow, specialized host ranges. To elucidate the genetic basis for these differences, we compared the genomes of 62 globally distributed T. gondii isolates to several closely related coccidian parasites. Our findings reveal that tandem amplification and diversification of secretory pathogenesis determinants is the primary feature that distinguishes the closely related genomes of these biologically diverse parasites. We further show that the unusual population structure of T. gondii is characterized by clade-specific inheritance of large conserved haploblocks that are significantly enriched in tandemly clustered secretory pathogenesis determinants. The shared inheritance of these conserved haploblocks, which show a different ancestry than the genome as a whole, may thus influence transmission, host range and pathogenicity.
ABCA1, a cholesterol transporter expressed in the brain, has been shown recently to be required to maintain normal apoE levels and lipidation in the central nervous system. In addition, ABCA1 has ...been reported to modulate β-amyloid (Aβ) production in vitro. These observations raise the possibility that ABCA1 may play a role in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer disease. Here we report that the deficiency of ABCA1 does not affect soluble or guanidine-extractable Aβ levels in Tg-SwDI/B or amyloid precursor protein/presenilin 1 (APP/PS1) mice, but rather is associated with a dramatic reduction in soluble apoE levels in brain. Although this reduction in apoE was expected to reduce the amyloid burden in vivo, we observed that the parenchymal and vascular amyloid load was increased in Tg-SwDI/B animals and was not diminished in APP/PS1 mice. Furthermore, we observed an increase in the proportion of apoE retained in the insoluble fraction, particularly in the APP/PS1 model. These data suggested that ABCA1-mediated effects on apoE levels and lipidation influenced amyloidogenesis in vivo.
Here, we present precise phase-connected pulse timing solutions for 16 γ-ray-selected pulsars recently discovered using the Large Area Telescope (LAT) on the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope plus one ...very faint radio pulsar (PSR J1124–5916) that is more effectively timed with the LAT. We describe the analysis techniques including a maximum likelihood method for determining pulse times of arrival from unbinned photon data. A major result of this work is improved position determinations, which are crucial for multiwavelength follow-up. For most of the pulsars, we overlay the timing localizations on X-ray images from Swift and describe the status of X-ray counterpart associations. We report glitches measured in PSRs J0007+7303, J1124–5916, and J1813–1246. We analyze a new 20 ks Chandra ACIS observation of PSR J0633+0632 that reveals an arcminute-scale X-ray nebula extending to the south of the pulsar. We were also able to precisely localize the X-ray point source counterpart to the pulsar and find a spectrum that can be described by an absorbed blackbody or neutron star atmosphere with a hard power-law component. Another Chandra ACIS image of PSR J1732–3131 reveals a faint X-ray point source at a location consistent with the timing position of the pulsar. Finally, we present a compilation of new and archival searches for radio pulsations from each of the γ-ray-selected pulsars as well as a new Parkes radio observation of PSR J1124–5916 to establish the γ-ray to radio phase offset.
The team signaling model for bacterial chemoreceptors proposes that receptor dimers of different detection specificities form mixed trimers of dimers that bind the cytoplasmic proteins CheA and CheW ...to form ternary signaling complexes clustered at the cell poles. We used a trifunctional crosslinking reagent targeted to cysteine residues in the aspartate (Tar) and serine (Tsr) receptors to obtain in vivo snapshots of trimer composition in the receptor population. To analyze the dynamics of trimer formation, we followed the appearance of mixed trimers when cells expressing Tar were induced for the expression of Tsr and treated with the crosslinker shortly after the onset of induction. In the absence of CheA or CheW, preformed Tar trimers exchanged partners readily with newly made Tsr. Conversely, in the presence of CheA and CheW, receptor trimers seldom exchanged partners, irrespective of the presence or absence of attractants. The C-terminal receptor-coupling domain of the CheA kinase, which contains binding determinants for the CheW protein, was essential for conferring low exchangeability to the preformed trimers of dimers. CheW also was required for this effect, but, unlike CheA, overexpression of CheW interfered with trimer formation and chemotactic behavior. The CheW effect probably occurs through binding interactions that mask the receptor sites needed for trimer formation. We propose that clustered receptors are organized in mixed trimers of dimers through binding interactions with CheA and CheW, which play distinctly different architectural roles. Moreover, once complete signaling teams have formed, they no longer undergo dynamic exchange of receptor members.

T conditions, ages and convergence rates for the Main Central Thrust ...(MCT) and affiliated faults in central Nepal. Inferred rates were 1.5±0.9 cm/yr (Langtang Thrust, ∼19 Ma), 2.2±0.7 cm/yr (Main Central Thrust, ∼15 Ma) and 7±3 cm/yr (Ramgarh Thrust, ∼10 Ma). The lower values are similar to modern convergence rates across the Himalaya, but the Ramgarh Thrust may have briefly absorbed all Indo–Asian convergence at ∼10 Ma, when foreland and marine sedimentation rates markedly increased, and at least one major strike slip fault in Tibet experienced a hiatus in movement. Variable rates of convergence across the Himalaya on Myr timescales imply Myr variations in strain rates throughout all components of the Indo–Asian orogen.
Water management remains a critical issue for polymer electrolyte fuel cell performance and durability, especially at lower temperatures and with ultrathin electrodes. To understand and explain ...experimental observations better, water transport in gas diffusion layers (GDLs) with macroscopically heterogeneous morphologies was simulated using a novel coupling of continuum and pore‐network models. X‐ray computed tomography was used to extract GDL material parameters for use in the pore‐network model. The simulations were conducted to explain experimental observations associated with stacking of anode GDLs, where stacking of the anode GDLs increased the limiting current density. Through imaging, it is shown that the stacked anode GDL exhibited an interfacial region of high porosity. The coupled model shows that this morphology allowed more efficient water movement through the anode and higher temperatures at the cathode compared to the single GDL case. As a result, the cathode exhibited less flooding and hence better low temperature performance with the stacked anode GDL.
ABSTRACT
We present a description of the Australian Dark Energy Survey (OzDES) and summarize the results from its 6 years of operations. Using the 2dF fibre positioner and AAOmega spectrograph on the ...3.9-m Anglo-Australian Telescope, OzDES has monitored 771 active galactic nuclei, classified hundreds of supernovae, and obtained redshifts for thousands of galaxies that hosted a transient within the 10 deep fields of the Dark Energy Survey. We also present the second OzDES data release, containing the redshifts of almost 30 000 sources, some as faint as rAB = 24 mag, and 375 000 individual spectra. These data, in combination with the time-series photometry from the Dark Energy Survey, will be used to measure the expansion history of the Universe out to z ∼ 1.2 and the masses of hundreds of black holes out to z ∼ 4. OzDES is a template for future surveys that combine simultaneous monitoring of targets with wide-field imaging cameras and wide-field multi-object spectrographs.
