ABSTRACT We apply a number of statistical and machine learning techniques to classify and rank gamma-ray sources from the Third Fermi Large Area Telescope Source Catalog (3FGL), according to their ...likelihood of falling into the two major classes of gamma-ray emitters: pulsars (PSR) or active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Using 1904 3FGL sources that have been identified/associated with AGNs (1738) and PSR (166), we train (using 70% of our sample) and test (using 30%) our algorithms and find that the best overall accuracy (>96%) is obtained with the Random Forest (RF) technique, while using a logistic regression (LR) algorithm results in only marginally lower accuracy. We apply the same techniques on a subsample of 142 known gamma-ray pulsars to classify them into two major subcategories: young (YNG) and millisecond pulsars (MSP). Once more, the RF algorithm has the best overall accuracy (∼90%), while a boosted LR analysis comes a close second. We apply our two best models (RF and LR) to the entire 3FGL catalog, providing predictions on the likely nature of unassociated sources, including the likely type of pulsar (YNG or MSP). We also use our predictions to shed light on the possible nature of some gamma-ray sources with known associations (e.g., binaries, supernova remnants/pulsar wind nebulae). Finally, we provide a list of plausible X-ray counterparts for some pulsar candidates, obtained using Swift, Chandra, and XMM. The results of our study will be of interest both for in-depth follow-up searches (e.g., pulsar) at various wavelengths and for broader population studies.
ABSTRACT
PSR J1813–1749 is one of the most energetic rotation-powered pulsars known, producing a pulsar wind nebula (PWN) and gamma-ray and TeV emission, but whose spin period is only measurable in ...X-ray. We present analysis of two Chandra data sets that are separated by more than 10 yr and recent NICER data. The long baseline of the Chandra data allows us to derive a pulsar proper motion $\mu _{\rm RA}=(-0.067\pm 0.010)\, \mathrm{ arcsec}\,\mathrm{yr^{-1}}$ and $\mu _{\rm Dec.}=(-0.014\pm 0.007)\, \mathrm{ arcsec}\,\mathrm{yr^{-1}}$ and velocity $v_\perp \approx 900\!-\!1600\, \mathrm{km\, s^{-1}}$ (assuming a distance d = 3–5 kpc), although we cannot exclude a contribution to the change in measured pulsar position due to a change in brightness structure of the PWN very near the pulsar. We model the PWN and pulsar spectra using an absorbed power law and obtain best-fitting absorption $N_{\rm H}=(13.1\pm 0.9)\times 10^{22}\, \mathrm{cm^{-2}}$, photon index Γ = 1.5 ± 0.1, and 0.3–10 keV luminosity $L_{\rm X}\approx 5.4\times 10^{34}\, \mathrm{erg\, s^{-1}}(d/\mbox{ 5 kpc})^2$ for the PWN and Γ = 1.2 ± 0.1 and $L_{\rm X}\approx 9.3\times 10^{33}\, \mathrm{erg\, s^{-1}}(d/\mbox{ 5 kpc})^2$ for PSR J1813–1749. These values do not change between the 2006 and 2016 observations. We use NICER observations from 2019 to obtain a timing model of PSR J1813–1749, with spin frequency ν = 22.35 Hz and spin frequency time derivative $\dot{\nu }=(-6.428\pm 0.003)\times 10^{-11}\, \mathrm{Hz\, s^{-1}}$. We also fit ν measurements from 2009 to 2012 and our 2019 value and find a long-term spin-down rate $\dot{\nu }=(-6.3445\pm 0.0004)\times 10^{-11}\, \mathrm{Hz\, s^{-1}}$. We speculate that the difference in spin-down rates is due to glitch activity or emission mode switching.
Context. The radio-quiet γ -ray pulsar PSR J2021+4026 is a peculiar Fermi -LAT pulsar showing repeated and quasi-periodic mode changes. Its γ -ray flux shows repeated variations between two states at ...intervals of ∼3.5 years. These events occur over timescales < 100 days and are correlated with sudden changes in the spin-down rate. Multiwavelength observations also revealed an X-ray phase shift relative to the γ -ray profile for one of the events. PSR J2021+4026 is currently the only known isolated γ -ray pulsar showing significant variability, and thus it has been the object of thorough investigations. Aims. The goal of our work is to study the mode changes of PSR J2021+4026 with improved detail. By accurately characterizing variations in the γ -ray spectrum and pulse profile, we aim to relate the Fermi -LAT observations to theoretical models. We also aim to interpret the mode changes in terms of variations in the structure of a multipolar dissipative magnetosphere. Methods. We continually monitored the rotational evolution and the γ -ray flux of PSR J2021+4026 using more than 13 years of Fermi -LAT data with a binned likelihood approach. We investigated the features of the phase-resolved spectrum and pulse profile, and from these we inferred the macroscopic conductivity, the electric field parallel to the magnetic field, and the curvature radiation cutoff energy. These physical quantities are related to the spin-down rate and the γ -ray flux and therefore are relevant to the theoretical interpretation of the mode changes. We introduced a simple magnetosphere model that combines a dipole field with a strong quadrupole component. We simulated magnetic field configurations to determine the positions of the polar caps for different sets of parameters. Results. We clearly detect the previous mode changes and confirm a more recent mode change that occurred around June 2020. We provide a full set of best-fit parameters for the phase-resolved γ -ray spectrum and the pulse profile obtained in five distinct time intervals. We computed the relative variations in the best-fit parameters, finding typical flux changes between 13% and 20%. Correlations appear between the γ -ray flux and the spectral parameters, as the peak of the spectrum shifts by ∼10% toward lower energies when the flux decreases. The analysis of the pulse profile reveals that the pulsed fraction of the light curve is larger when the flux is low. Finally, the magnetosphere simulations show that some configurations could explain the observed multiwavelength variability. However, self-consistent models are required to reproduce the observed magnitudes of the mode changes.
We present the result of a search of the Milagro sky map for spatial correlations with sources from a subset of the recent Fermi Bright Source List (BSL). The BSL consists of the 205 most significant ...sources detected above 100 MeV by the Fermi Large Area Telescope. We select sources based on their categorization in the BSL, taking all confirmed or possible Galactic sources in the field of view of Milagro. Of the 34 Fermi sources selected, 14 are observed by Milagro at a significance of 3 standard deviations or more. We conduct this search with a new analysis which employs newly optimized gamma-hadron separation and utilizes the full eight-year Milagro data set. Milagro is sensitive to gamma rays with energy from 1 to 100 TeV with a peak sensitivity from 10 to 50 TeV depending on the source spectrum and declination. These results extend the observation of these sources far above the Fermi energy band. With the new analysis and additional data, multi-TeV emission is definitively observed associated with the Fermi pulsar, J2229.0+6114, in the Boomerang pulsar wind nebula (PWN). Furthermore, an extended region of multi-TeV emission is associated with the Fermi pulsar, J0634.0+1745, the Geminga pulsar.
Using the Parkes Radio Telescope, we have carried out deep observations of 11 unassociated gamma-ray sources. Periodicity searches of these data have discovered two millisecond pulsars, PSR ...J1103−5403 (1FGL J1103.9−5355) and PSR J2241−5236 (1FGL J2241.9−5236), and a long-period pulsar, PSR J1604−44 (1FGL J1604.7−4443). In addition, we searched for but did not detect any radio pulsations from six gamma-ray pulsars discovered by the Fermi satellite to a level of ∼0.04 mJy (for pulsars with a 10 per cent duty cycle).
The timing of the millisecond pulsar PSR J1103−5403 has shown that its position is 9 arcmin from the centroid of the gamma-ray source. Since these observations were carried out, independent evidence has shown that 1FGL J1103.9−5355 is associated with the flat spectrum radio source PKS 1101−536. It appears certain that the pulsar is not associated with the gamma-ray source, despite the seemingly low probability of a chance detection of a radio millisecond pulsar. We consider that PSR J1604−44 is a chance discovery of a weak, long-period pulsar and is unlikely to be associated with 1FGL J1604.7−4443. PSR J2241−5236 has a spin period of 2.2 ms and orbits a very low mass companion with a 3.5-h orbital period. The relatively high flux density and low dispersion measure of PSR J2241−5236 make it an excellent candidate for high precision timing experiments. The gamma rays of 1FGL J2241.9−5236 have a spectrum that is well modelled by a power law with an exponential cut-off, and phase binning with the radio ephemeris results in a multipeaked gamma-ray pulse profile. Observations with Chandra have identified a coincident X-ray source within 0.1 arcsec of the position of the pulsar obtained by radio timing.
We report the discovery of nine previously unknown gamma-ray pulsars in a blind search of data from the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT). The pulsars were found with a novel hierarchical search ...method originally developed for detecting continuous gravitational waves from rapidly rotating neutron stars. Designed to find isolated pulsars spinning at up to kHz frequencies, the new method is computationally efficient and incorporates several advances, including a metric-based gridding of the search parameter space (frequency, frequency derivative, and sky location) and the use of photon probability weights. The nine pulsars have spin frequencies between 3 and 12 Hz, and characteristic ages ranging from 17 kyr to 3 Myr. Two of them, PSRs J1803-2149 and J2111+ 4606, are young and energetic Galactic-plane pulsars (spin-down power above 6 x 10 super(35) erg s super(-1) and ages below 100 kyr). The seven remaining pulsars, PSRs J0106+4855, J0622+3749, J1620-4927, J1746-3239, J2028+3332, J2030+4415, and J2139+4716, are older and less energetic; two of them are located at higher Galactic latitudes (b > 10degrees). PSR J0106+4855 has the largest characteristic age (3 Myr) and the smallest surface magnetic field (2 x 10 super(11) G) of all LAT blind-search pulsars. PSR J2139+4716 has the lowest spin-down power (3 x 10 super(33) erg s super(-1)) among all non-recycled gamma-ray pulsars ever found. Despite extensive multi-frequency observations, only PSR JO 106+4855 has detectable pulsations in the radio band. The other eight pulsars belong to the increasing population of radio-quiet gamma-ray pulsars.
Results are presented of a harmonic analysis of the large-scale cosmic-ray (CR) anisotropy as observed by the Milagro observatory. We show a two-dimensional display of the sidereal anisotropy ...projections in right ascension (R.A.) generated by the fitting of three harmonics to 18 separate declination bands. The Milagro observatory is a water Cherenkov detector located in the Jemez mountains near Los Alamos, New Mexico. With a high duty cycle and large field of view, Milagro is an excellent instrument for measuring this anisotropy with high sensitivity at TeV energies. The analysis is conducted using a seven-year data sample consisting of more than 95 billion events, the largest such data set in existence. We observe an anisotropy with a magnitude around 0.1% for CRs with a median energy of 6 TeV. The dominant feature is a deficit region of depth (2.49 - 0.02 stat. - 0.09 sys.) X10-3 in the direction of the Galactic north pole centered at 189 deg R.A. We observe a steady increase in the magnitude of the signal over seven years.
ABSTRACT We present new Chandra and XMM-Newton observations of a sample of eight radio-quiet (RQ) γ-ray pulsars detected by the Fermi Large Area Telescope. For all eight pulsars we identify the X-ray ...counterpart, based on the X-ray source localization and the best position obtained from γ-ray pulsar timing. For PSR J2030+4415 we found evidence for a ∼10″-long pulsar wind nebula. Our new results consolidate the work from Marelli et al. and confirm that, on average, the γ-ray-to-X-ray flux ratios (Fγ/FX) of RQ pulsars are higher than for the radio-loud (RL) ones. Furthermore, while the Fγ/FX distribution features a single peak for the RQ pulsars, the distribution is more dispersed for the RL ones, possibly showing two peaks. We discuss possible implications of these different distributions based on current models for pulsar X-ray emission.
The 7 year data set of the Milagro TeV observatory contains 2.2 x 10(11) events of which most are due to hadronic cosmic rays. These data are searched for evidence of intermediate scale structure. ...Excess emission on angular scales of approximately 10 degrees has been found in two localized regions of unknown origin with greater than 12sigma significance. Both regions are inconsistent with pure gamma-ray emission with high confidence. One of the regions has a different energy spectrum than the isotropic cosmic-ray flux at a level of 4.6sigma, and it is consistent with hard spectrum protons with an exponential cutoff, with the most significant excess at approximately 10 TeV. Potential causes of these excesses are explored, but no compelling explanations are found.
We report the discovery of eight gamma-ray pulsars in blind frequency searches using the LAT, onboard the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope. Five of the eight pulsars are young (tau_c<100 kyr), ...energetic (Edot>10^36 erg/s), and located within the Galactic plane (|b|<3 deg). The remaining three are older, less energetic, and located off the plane. Five pulsars are associated with sources included in the LAT bright gamma-ray source list, but only one, PSR J1413-6205, is clearly associated with an EGRET source. PSR J1023-5746 has the smallest characteristic age (tau_c=4.6 kyr) and is the most energetic (Edot=1.1E37 erg/s) of all gamma-ray pulsars discovered so far in blind searches. PSRs J1957+5033 and J2055+25 have the largest characteristic ages (tau_c~1 Myr) and are the least energetic (Edot~5E33 erg/s) of the newly-discovered pulsars. We present the timing models, light curves, and detailed spectral parameters of the new pulsars. We used recent XMM observations to identify the counterpart of PSR J2055+25 as XMMU J205549.4+253959. In addition, publicly available archival Chandra X-ray data allowed us to identify the likely counterpart of PSR J1023-5746 as a faint, highly absorbed source, CXOU J102302.8-574606. The large X-ray absorption indicates that this could be among the most distant gamma-ray pulsars detected so far. PSR J1023-5746 is positionally coincident with the TeV source HESS J1023-575, located near the young stellar cluster Westerlund 2, while PSR J1954+2836 is coincident with a 4.3 sigma excess reported by Milagro at a median energy of 35 TeV. Deep radio follow-up observations of the eight pulsars resulted in no detections of pulsations and upper limits comparable to the faintest known radio pulsars, indicating that these can be included among the growing population of radio-quiet pulsars in our Galaxy being uncovered by the LAT, and currently numbering more than 20.
