Context. The neutrino event IceCube−170922A appears to originate from the BL Lac object TXS 0506+056. To understand the neutrino creation process and to localize the emission site, we studied the ...radio images of the jet at 15 GHz. Aims. Other BL Lac objects show properties similar to those of TXS 0506+056, such as multiwavelength variability or a curved jet. However, to date only TXS 0506+056 has been identified as neutrino emitter. The aim of this paper is to determine what makes the parsec-scale jet of TXS 0506+056 specific in this respect. Methods. We reanalyzed and remodeled 16 VLBA 15 GHz observations between 2009 and 2018. We thoroughly examined the jet kinematics and flux-density evolution of individual jet components during the time of enhanced neutrino activity between September 2014 and March 2015, and in particular before and after the neutrino event. Results. Our results suggest that the jet is very strongly curved and most likely observable under a special viewing angle of close to zero. We may observe the interaction between jet features that cross each other’s paths. We find subsequent flux-density flaring of six components passing the likely collision site. In addition, we find a strong indication for precession of the inner jet, and model a precession period of about 10 yr via the Lense-Thirring effect. We discuss an alternative scenario, which is the interpretation of observing the signature of two jets within TXS 0506+056, again hinting toward a collision of jetted material. We essentially suggest that the neutrino emission may result from the interaction of jetted material in combination with a special viewing angle and jet precession. Conclusions. We propose that the enhanced neutrino activity during the neutrino flare in 2014–2015 and the single EHE neutrino IceCube-170922A could have been generated by a cosmic collision within TXS 0506+056. Our findings seem capable of explaining the neutrino generation at the time of a low gamma-ray flux and also indicate that TXS 0506+056 might be an atypical blazar. It seems to be the first time that a potential collision of two jets on parsec scales has been reported and that the detection of a cosmic neutrino might be traced back to a cosmic jet-collision.

The Flat Spectrum Radio Quasar PKS 1502+106 is located within the 50 percent uncertainty region of the event. ...Our analysis of 15 GHz Very Long Baseline Ar-ray (VLBA) and astrometric 8 GHz VLBA data, in a time span prior and after theIceCube event, reveals evidence for a radio ring structure which develops with time.Several arc-structures evolve perpendicular to the jet ridge line. We find evidence forprecession of a curved jet based on kinematic modelling and a periodicity analysis.An outflowing broad line region (BLR) based on the C IV line emission (Sloan Dig-ital Sky Survey, SDSS) is found. We attribute the atypical ring to an interaction ofthe precessing jet with the outflowing material.We discuss our findings in thecontext of a spine-sheath scenario where the ring reveals the sheath andits interaction with the surroundings (NLR clouds).We find that the radioemission is correlated with theγ-ray emission, with radio lagging theγ-rays. Basedon theγ-ray variability timescale, we constrain theγ-ray emission zone to the BLR(30-200rg) and within the jet launching region. We discuss that the outflowing BLRprovides the external radiation field forγ-ray production via external Compton scat-tering.The neutrino is most likely produced by proton-proton interactionin the blazar zone (beyond the BLR), enabled by episodic encounters ofthe jet with dense clouds, i.e. some molecular cloud in the NLR.

We examine the effect of a jet transversal structure from magnetohydrodynamic semi-analytical modelling on the total intensity profiles of relativistic jets from active galactic nuclei. In ...order to determine the conditions for forming double- and triple-peaked transverse intensity profiles, we calculate the radiative transfer for synchrotron emission with self-absorption from the jets described by the models with a constant angular velocity and with a total electric current closed inside a jet. We show that double-peaked profiles appear either in the models with high maximal Lorentz factors or in optically thick conditions. We show that triple-peaked profiles in radio galaxies constrain the fraction of the emitting particles in a jet. We introduce the possible conditions for triple-peaked profiles under the assumptions that non-thermal electrons are preferably located at the jet edges or are distributed according to Ohmic heating.

Geometry of relativistic jets in active galaxies provides important information about mechanisms of launching, collimation, and acceleration of plasma flow. We propose a new method to probe ...a boundary shape of a jet on parsec scales – in the vicinity of its radio core. Apparent speed of an outflow is derived from variability time delays and core shifts measured at the same jet region, providing a self-consistent estimate of the Lorentz factor Γ. We link together the distance along the jet z with its transverse size assuming a constant flow acceleration. Our results indicate that jets have parabolic shape and sustain an effective acceleration in the core region, consistent with the Lorentz factor dependency Γ ∝ z0.5. The proposed method can be applied to the sources observed at small viewing angles as well as to the distant sources when direct measurements are impossible due to a limited angular resolution.

ABSTRACT
The spectral index images of the jet in the nearby radio galaxy M87 have previously been shown with Very Long Baseline Interferometric arrays at 2–43 GHz. They exhibit flattening of the ...spectra at a location of inner (central) spine and towards outer ridges. This could imply optical depth effects, lower energy cut-off, or stratification of the emitting particles energy distribution. In this paper, we employ simulations of multifrequency VLBI observations of M87 radio jet with various model brightness distributions. CLEAN deconvolution errors produce significant features in the observed images. For intensity images, they result in the appearance of the inner ridge line in the intrinsically edge brightened jet models. For spectral index images, they flatten the spectra in a series of stripes along the jet. Another bias encountered in our simulations is steepening of the spectra in a low surface brightness jet regions. These types of the imaging artefacts do not depend on the model considered. We propose a method for the compensation of the systematics using only the observed data.
ABSTRACT
The Blandford and Königl model of active galactic nuclei (AGN) jets predicts that the position of the apparent opaque jet base – the core – changes with frequency. This effect is observed ...with radio interferometry and is widely used to infer parameters and structure of the innermost jet regions. The position of the radio core is typically estimated by fitting a Gaussian template to the interferometric visibilities. This results in a model approximation error, i.e. a bias that can be detected and evaluated through simulations of observations with a realistic jet model. To assess the bias, we construct an artificial sample of sources based on the AGN jet model evaluated on a grid of the parameters derived from a real VLBI flux-density-limited sample and create simulated VLBI data sets at 2.3, 8.1, and 15.4 GHz. We found that the core position shifts from the true jet apex are generally overestimated. The bias is typically comparable to the core shift random error and can reach a factor of 2 for jets with large apparent opening angles. This observational bias depends mostly on the ratio between the true core shift and the image resolution. This implies that the magnetic field, the core radial distance, and the jet speed inferred from the core shift measurements are overestimated. We present a method to account for the bias.
ABSTRACT
We present full-track high-resolution radio observations of the jet of the galaxy M87 at 8 and 15 GHz. These observations were taken over three consecutive days in 2009 May using the Very ...Long Baseline Array (VLBA), one antenna of the Very Large Array (VLA), and the Effelsberg 100 m telescope. Our produced images have dynamic ranges exceeding 20 000:1 and resolve linear scales down to approximately 100 Schwarzschild radii, revealing a limb-brightened jet and a faint, steep spectrum counter-jet. We performed jet-to-counter-jet analysis, which helped estimate the physical parameters of the flow. The rich internal structure of the jet is dominated by three helical threads, likely produced by the Kelvin–Helmholtz (KH) instability developing in a supersonic flow with a Mach number of approximately 20 and an enthalpy ratio of around 0.3. We produce a clean imaging bias-corrected 8–15 GHz spectral index image, which shows spectrum flattening in regions of helical thread intersections. This further supports the KH origin of the observed internal structure of the jet. We detect polarized emission in the jet at distances of approximately 20 milliarcseconds from the core and find Faraday rotation which follows a transverse gradient across the jet. We apply Faraday rotation correction to the polarization position angle and find that the position angle changes as a function of distance from the jet axis, which suggests the presence of a helical magnetic field.

ABSTRACT
At present, there is no doubt that relativistic jets observed in active galactic nuclei pass from highly magnetized to weakly magnetized stage, which is observed as a break in the dependence ...on their width $d_{\rm jet}(z)$ on the distance z to the central engine. In this paper, we discuss the possibility of observing another break, which should be located at shorter distances. The position of this break can be associated with the region of formation of the dense central core near the jet axis which was predicted both analytically and numerically more than a decade ago, but has not yet received sufficient attention. In this case, the observed width should be determined by the dense core, and not by the total transverse size of the jet. The calculations carried out in this paper, which took into account both the transverse electromagnetic structure of the jet and the change in the spectrum of emitting particles along its axis, indeed showed such behaviour. We also found the evidence of the predicted break in the jet expansion profile using stacked 15 GHz Very Large Baseline Array (VLBA) image of M87 radio jet and constrain the light cylinder radius.
ABSTRACT
We analysed the parsec-scale linear polarization properties of 436 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) based on 15 GHz polarimetric Very Long Baseline Array observations. We present polarization ...and total intensity images averaged over at least five epochs since 1996 January 19 through 2019 August 4. Stacking improves the image sensitivity down to ∼30 μJy beam−1 and effectively fills out the jet cross-section both in total intensity and linear polarization. It delineates the long-term persistent magnetic field configuration and its regularity by restoring spatial distributions of the electric vector position angle (EVPA) and fractional polarization, respectively. On average, about 10 yr of stacking period is needed to reveal the stable and most-complete polarization distribution of a source. We find that the degree of polarization significantly increases down and across the jet towards its edges, typically manifesting U or W-shaped transverse profiles, suggesting a presence of a large-scale helical magnetic field associated with the outflow. In some AGN jets, mainly BL Lacs, we detect quasi-constant fractional polarization profiles across the jet, accompanied by EVPAs that closely follow the outflow. BL Lacs show higher fractional polarization values in their cores and jets than those in quasars up to hectoparsec de-projected scales, while on larger scales, they become comparable. High-synchrotron-peaked BL Lac jets are found to be less polarized than intermediate and low-synchrotron-peaked BL Lacs. The spatial distribution of the EVPAs in BL Lacs tend to align with the local jet direction, while quasars show an excess of orthogonal polarization orientation.
