The Physics Beyond Colliders initiative is an exploratory study aimed at exploiting the full scientific potential of the CERN's accelerator complex and scientific infrastructures through projects ...complementary to the LHC and other possible future colliders. These projects will target fundamental physics questions in modern particle physics. This document presents the status of the proposals presented in the framework of the Beyond Standard Model physics working group, and explore their physics reach and the impact that CERN could have in the next 10-20 years on the international landscape.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE—We aimed to evaluate the impact of brain atrophy on long-term clinical outcome in patients with acute ischemic stroke treated with endovascular therapy, and more specifically, ...to test whether there are interactions between the degree of atrophy and infarct volume, and between atrophy and age, in determining the risk of futile reperfusion.
METHODS—We studied consecutive patients with acute ischemic stroke with proximal anterior circulation intracranial arterial occlusions treated with endovascular therapy achieving successful arterial recanalization. Brain atrophy was evaluated on baseline computed tomography with the global cortical atrophy scale, and Evans index was calculated to assess subcortical atrophy. Infarct volume was assessed on control computed tomography at 24 hours using the formula for irregular volumes (A×B×C/2). Main outcome variable was futile recanalization, defined by functional dependence (modified Rankin Scale score >2) at 3 months. The predefined interactions of atrophy with age and infarct volume were studied in regression models.
RESULTS—From 361 consecutive patients with anterior circulation acute ischemic stroke treated with endovascular therapy, 295 met all inclusion criteria. Futile reperfusion was observed in 144 out of 295 (48.8%) patients. Cortical atrophy affecting parieto-occipital and temporal regions was associated with futile recanalization. Total global cortical atrophy score and Evans index were independently associated with futile recanalization in an adjusted logistic regression. Multivariable adjusted regression models disclosed significant interactions between global cortical atrophy score and infarct volume (odds ratio, 1.003 95%CI, 1.002–1.004, P<0.001) and between global cortical atrophy score and age (odds ratio, 1.001 95% CI, 1.001–1.002, P<0.001) in determining the risk of futile reperfusion.
CONCLUSIONS—A higher degree of cortical and subcortical brain atrophy is associated with futile endovascular reperfusion in anterior circulation acute ischemic stroke. The impact of brain atrophy on insufficient clinical recovery after endovascular reperfusion appears to be independently amplified by age and by infarct volume.
Research shows that health care use among Latino immigrants is adversely affected by restrictive immigration policy. A core concern is that immigrants shy away from sharing personal information in ...response to policies that expand bureaucratic monitoring of citizenship status across service-providing organizations. This investigation addresses the concern that immigration politics also negatively influences health care utilization among Latino US citizens. One implication is that health insurance expansions may not reduce health care inequities among Latinos due to concern about exposure to immigration law enforcement authorities. Using data from the 2015 Latino National Health and Immigration Survey, we examine the extent to which the politics of immigration deters individuals from going to health care providers and service-providing institutions. Results indicate that Latino US citizens are less likely to make an appointment to see a health care provider when the issue of immigration is mentioned. Additionally, Latino US citizens who know someone who has been deported are more inclined to perceive that information shared with health care providers is not secure. We discuss how cautious citizenship, or risk-avoidance behaviors toward public institutions in order to avoid scrutiny of citizenship status, informs debates about reducing health care inequities.

This is a prospective observational study that analyzes the nutritional status of patients at the beginning of nutritional monitoring. The morphofunctional assessment included the examination of anthropometric variables such as weight, height, body mass index (BMI), arm circumference, and calf circumference. Additionally, electrical bioimpedanciometry (BIA) was used to measure electrical parameters and estimate other relevant metrics. Muscle ultrasonography
(quadriceps rectus femoris (QRF)) assessed muscle mass parameters, including muscle area index (MARAI), anteroposterior diameter of the QRF (
-axis) (cm), transverse diameter of the QRF (
-axis) (cm), and the sum of the quadriceps thickness (RF+VI) (cm), as well as muscle quality parameters such as echogenicity and the Y-X index.
A total of 37 patients diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) were included in this study. Of these patients, 51.4% were men. The mean age was 64.27 (12.59) years. A total of 54.1% of the patients had a bulbar onset of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and 45.9% had spinal onset. The percentage of subjects with malnutrition diagnosed by the Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) criteria was 45.9% of patients. There was a direct correlation between muscle mass parameters assessed by muscle ultrasonography (RF+VI) and active mass markers measured by bioimpedanciometry (body cellular mass index (BCMI) (r = 0.62;
< 0.01), fat-free mass index (FFMI) (r = 0.75;
< 0.01), and appendicular skeletal mass index (ASMI) (r = 0.69;
< 0.01)). There was a direct correlation between echogenicity and resistance (r = 0.44;
= 0.02), as well as between the fat-free mass index and the Y-X index (r = 0.36;
= 0.14). Additionally, there was a negative correlation between echogenicity and BCMI (r = -0.46;
< 0.01) and ASMI (r = 0.34;
= 0.06). Patients with low quadriceps thickness (male < 2.49 cm; female < 1.84 cm) showed an increased risk of hospital admission adjusted by age, sex, and presence of dysphagia (OR: 7.84 (CI 95%: 1.09-56.07);
-value = 0.04), and patients with low-quality mass (Y-X index < 0.35) had a higher risk of hospital admission adjusted by age, sex, and presence of dysphagia (OR: 19.83 (CI 95%: 1.77-222.46);
-value = 0.02).
In patients with ALS, ultrasonography echogenicity was inversely related to BCMI, FFMI, and ASMI, and the Y-X index was directly related to FFMI. The lowest quartiles of quadriceps thickness and Y-X index are risk factors for hospital admission.
Objective
This study seeks to contribute to the current understanding of dietary variation in the late Prehistory of the northeastern Iberian Peninsula by examining buccal dental microwear patterns ...alongside archeological data from the same populations.
Materials and Methods
Teeth from 84 adult individuals from eight distinct samples spanning the Middle‐Late Neolithic to the Middle Bronze Age (Cova de l'Avi, Cova de Can Sadurní, Cova de la Guineu, Cova Foradada, Cova del Trader, Roc de les Orenetes, Cova del Gegant, Cova dels Galls Carboners) were analyzed using optical microscopy to examine buccal dental microwear patterns.
Results
The analysis did not reveal clear chronological contrasts in the dietary habits of these samples. Nevertheless, significant differences emerged among the samples, leading to their classification into two distinct sets based on the abrasiveness of the diet informed by the microwear patterns. These findings offer similarities and differences among samples in the Iberian Peninsula, shedding light on the diverse lifestyles of these individuals.
Discussion
Integrating our new results with other available proxies points to a multifaceted specialization in dietary patterns among these samples, influenced by factors such as habitat, resource selection, and available technology. By contextualizing the results within the broader context of the Iberian Peninsula, this research discerns shared characteristics and distinctive adaptations in the dietary practices and subsistence strategies of these groups. Ultimately, this study contributes to a deeper understanding of the intricate interplay between culture and environment in shaping human diets throughout late Prehistory.

Pesticides are commonly used worldwide and almost every human is potentially exposed to these chemicals. Exposure to pesticides such as permethrin and malathion has been associated with hematological ...malignancies in epidemiological studies. However, biological evidence showing if these chemicals induce genetic aberrations involved in the etiology of leukemia and lymphoma is missing. In our previous work, we have shown that a single high exposure (200 μm, 24 hours) of permethrin and malathion induce damage in genes associated with hematological malignancies in peripheral blood mononuclear cells analyzed by interphase fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). In the present study, we assessed by FISH whether exposure to low concentrations (0.1 μm, 72 hours) of permethrin and malathion induce aberrations in KMT2A and IGH genes, which are involved in the etiology of leukemia and lymphoma. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells were exposed to the chemicals, and damage in these genes was assessed on interphases and metaphases. We observed that both chemicals at low concentration induced structural aberrations in KMT2A and IGH genes. A higher level of damage was observed in KMT2A gene with malathion treatment and in IGH gene with permethrin exposure. We also observed numerical aberrations induced by these chemicals. The most frequent aberrations detected on interphase FISH were also observed on metaphases. Our results show that permethrin and malathion induce genetic damage in genes associated with hematological cancer, at concentrations biologically relevant. In addition, damage was observed on dividing cells, which suggests that these cells maintain their proliferation capacity in spite of the genetic damage they possess.
