Mechanical oscillators can be sensitive to very small forces. Low frequency effects are up-converted to higher frequency by rotating the oscillator. We show that for 2-dimensional oscillators ...rotating at frequency much higher than the signal the thermal noise force due to internal losses and competing with it is abated as the square root of the rotation frequency. We also show that rotation at frequency much higher than the natural one is possible if the oscillator has 2 degrees of freedom, and describe how this property applies also to torsion balances. In addition, in the 2D oscillator the signal is up-converted above resonance without being attenuated as in the 1D case, thus relaxing requirements on the read out. This work indicates that proof masses weakly coupled in 2D and rapidly rotating can play a major role in very small force physics experiments.

Major Atmospheric Gamma Imaging Cherenkov telescope is starting its operations with a set of engineering runs to tune the telescope subsystem elements to be ready for the first physics campaign. Many ...technical improvements have been developed and implemented in several elements of the telescope to reach the lowest energy threshold ever obtained by an Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescope. A general description of the telescope is presented. The commissioning of the telescope's elements is described and the expected performances are reviewed with the final detector set-up.

The MAGIC telescope aims at the detection of very low energy gamma rays (E>30 GeV) through the atmospheric emission of Cherenkov light. We report the detection of a new source of very high energy (VHE; unk greater than or equal to 100 Gev) Y-ray emission located close to the Galactic plane, MA J0616+225, which is spatially coincident ...with supernova remnant IC 443. The observations were carried out with the MAGIC telescope unk 2005 December-2006 January and 2006 December-2007 January. Here we present results from this source, leading to a VHE Y-ray unk statistical significance of 5.7 sigma in the 2006/2007 data and a measured differential Y-ray flux consistent with a power law, described as unk(dAdtdE) = (1.0 plus or minus 0.2) x 10 super(11)(E/0.4TeV)-3.1 plus or minus 0.3 cm super(-2) s super(-1) Tev super(-1). we briefly discuss the observational technique used and the unk implemented for the data analysis. The results are placed in the context of the multiwavelength emission and the molecular environment region of IC 443.
