The analysis of quench is of paramount importance for the safe operation of any superconducting magnet and this investigation is more relevant, even not fundamental, to prevent damage or burn-out in ...HTS magnets. Given these premises, quench tests and numerical models are indispensable. A 1D electro-thermal model was developed at the University of Bologna (Italy) and validated versus experimental quench tests performed at the University of Southampton (U.K.) on a pancake coil wound with REBCO Roebel cable in the frame of the EUCARD-2 European Project. The analysis here presented investigates quench in the Roebel-based coil in case of a thermal disturbance introduced in the coil. The quench energies measured during tests as a function of the power disturbance are compared with the computed results. The quench energy is furthermore analysed energizing the coil at different transport current. The analysis is further extended to study the quench of the coil at temperatures of 66 K and at field of 2 T.

Purpose
Renal injury is common in cancer patients and its etiology is multifactorial. Different patterns of renal histological lesions have been described in relation to oncologic treatments, notably ...acute tubular necrosis and tubulointerstitial nephritis, but also thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA).
Methods
We report a case of TMA secondary to capecitabine in an 82-year-old woman diagnosed with localized colon adenocarcinoma.
Results
The patient, with previous normal kidney function, presented with renal impairment during the fourth cycle of chemotherapy. After potential nephrotoxic factors were ruled out, capecitabine was discontinued and a kidney biopsy was performed, which displayed TMA lesions. An improvement in renal function was observed after definitive cessation of cytotoxic chemotherapy. Although rare, renal toxicity in the form of TMA may be associated with the use of cytotoxic agents such as gemcitabine, but there is no reported evidence of its association to capecitabine. Early withdrawal of the drug and nephrology consultation is necessary to prevent irreversible damage.
Conclusion
We describe, to our knowledge, the first case reported in the literature regarding the possible association of TMA and capecitabine.
MgB 2 superconducting wires hold the advantage over traditional NbTi wires of higher temperature operation, at lower cost than high temperature superconductors, and allowing the use of existing ...winding techniques. The adoption of MgB 2 wires into large-scale applications requires a robust production process yielding long length wires with consistent performance. Bekaert and Epoch wires have developed a scalable powder-in-tube technique capable of producing MgB 2 wires in km lengths. Demonstrating practical current density in a solenoid coil is an essential step towards larger demonstration assemblies and coils, in wind-and-react or react-and-wind configurations. Here, we report on the performance of a compact wind-and-react solenoid coil wound from Bekaert/Epoch wires 1+6 MgB 2 cable, made up of unstabilized, monocore 0.4 mm MgB 2 wires. The coil was tested in a He-vapor cooled VTI inside a 10 T Cryofree magnet, between 10 K and 20 K, and at up to 3 T background field. The coil reached 384 A at 15 K in zero external field, generating a self-field of 1.88 T without quench. The coil was quenched multiple times without damage.
Abstract In plant breeding, the dialelic models univariate have aided the selection of parents for hybridization. Multivariate analyses allow combining and associating the multiple pieces of ...information of the genetic relationships between traits. Therefore, multivariate analyses might refine the discrimination and selection of the parents with greater potential to meet the goals of a plant breeding program. Here, we propose a method of multivariate analysis used for stablishing mega-traits (MTs) in diallel trials. The proposed model is applied in the evaluation of a multi-environment complete diallel trial with 90 F1’s of simple maize hybrids. From a set of 14 traits, we demonstrated how establishing and interpreting MTs with agronomic implication. The diallel analyzes based on mega-traits present an important evolution in statistical procedures since the selection is based on several traits. We believe that the proposed method fills an important gap of plant breeding. In our example, three MTs were established. The first, formed by plant stature-related traits, the second by tassel size-related traits, and the third by grain yield-related traits. Individual and joint diallel analysis using the established MTs allowed identifying the best hybrid combinations for achieving F1’s with lower plant stature, tassel size, and higher grain yield.
The Upper Capsian is an Epipalaeolithic techno-complex occurring in the Maghreb between the 9th and the 8th millennium cal BP, generally associated with the appearance of pressure-knapping bladelet ...production. The chronology of Capsian sequences based on earlier excavations is uncertain, and studies of lithic industries based on a technological approach are relatively scarce. The site of SHM-1 (Hergla) in east coastal Tunisia has been recently excavated with a stratigraphic protocol. A sequence of seven main layers was detected, all radiocarbon dated. The technological and petrological study applied to the lithic production established on a diachronic basis allowed identification of the main chaînes opératoires involved in bladelet and flake production. The first was obtained through three main schemes, with the pressure bladelet production starting in the first occupational layer, at the first half of the 9th millennium cal BP. Some changes appear between the older layers and recent ones, including the introduction of a more sophisticated pressure mode in the last layers. Detailed examination of the pressure production modes reveals distinctive platform preparation, opening different questions. The pressure bladelets are mainly transformed into backed bladelets, geometric microliths and notches and denticulates. The typological analysis of the armatures reveals an evolution in the raw material selected for some specific tools as well as some changes in the tool types produced.
The High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) project aims at upgrading the LHC collider to increase its luminosity by about a factor of five. The electrical connection between the magnets in the LHC tunnel and ...the power converters in a new transverse tunnel will be supplied by a superconducting line (SCLink), consisting of ten MgB2 cables housed into a 140 metre long flexible cryostat. This paper presents the detailed design for one of two types of distribution feedbox, (DFX) located between the magnet and the distribution feedbox. The vacuum barrier required to separate the vacuums of the upper SCLink and lower DFX sections; is to be integrated in the middle of the vertical section of DFX. A detailed study was performed, given the complexity of installing a vacuum barrier with a large diameter within a restricted height. Eccentric loading on the barrier is created by the "L-shape" vessel, necessary to accommodate the transition of the cable from vertical-to-horizontal. The solution considers a vacuum barrier assembly consisting of a flexible corrugated membrane (bellows) and deploys a lightweight "supporting cage" around the barrier and restraining rods in the horizontal section to ensure the barrier bares no substantial load or torque, and suffers no lateral or column type instability during operating and accidental conditions. The current design satisfies the mechanical and thermal design criteria outlined in the DFX specification.
MgB 2 conductors have a multifilamentary superconducting structure encased in sheaths of different materials. Conductors with ferromagnetic sheaths, such as Ni or Fe, redistribute the magnetic field, ...which can affect the critical current of the superconducting filaments. The internal magnetic field distribution inside the conductor is not considered in general when modeling magnets, where the winding is considered as a bulk. The previous assumption can lead to discrepancies between the experimental results and numerical Ic predictions. Hence, a correct analysis of the effects of the ferromagnetic matrix in conductors will lead to savings in cost and weight of the coil design. In this work, the magnetic field distribution inside tapes with different architectures based on existing MgB 2 tapes has been obtained. The magnetic field in the filaments is modeled focusing on the influence of the ferromagnetic matrix in the field distribution. The study is extended to round pancake coils based on the prototype coils aimed for its application in wind turbines in the SUPRAPOWER project.
In the design and feasibility of electric power applications with MgB2 conductors, thermal conductivity plays an important role. In composite wires and tapes it is mainly determined by the amount of ...stabilizer (usually copper), while for coils the electric insulation and epoxy binder characteristics are added. In this paper we present results on quench development and propagation on isolated superconducting tapes and small single pancake coils cooled by thermal conduction, for three types of MgB2 tape with different stabilizations. The quench parameters at different temperatures, such as minimum quench energy (MQE), minimum propagation zone (MPZ) and quench propagation velocity (vp), are reported. A complete electrical and thermal characterization of the superconducting tapes and of non-superconducting materials used in the coil manufacture has been made. With these data, numerical computational models using finite element simulations have been performed for isolated wires and single pancake coils, and the results of the relevant quench parameters have been compared with the measured values.
The authors reply here to the recent paper by Delage on Leroi-Gourhan and the concept of the chaine opératoire. Leaving aside the excessive nature of his accusations, they show that his confusion of ...the chaîne opératoire concept and method, ignorance of the developmental context of the 1950s and the 1960s, and his pretence to 'straighten' a story without looking at the pertinent archives and interviewing the surviving participants results in a highly biased argument and several misrepresentations.
The thermal stability of superconducting YBCO-coated conductors subject to over-currents are analysed. We have studied the effect of DC and AC over-current pulses in Cu-stabilized and non-stabilized ...coated conductors by measuring the electric field and temperature profiles of these conductors immersed in liquid nitrogen. Current pulses of short duration of about 90 ms and long duration of a few seconds were applied to the samples. Three different cooling regimes of liquid nitrogen--convection, nucleate boiling and film boiling--were observed and their influence on the recovery time of superconductivity in the coated conductors after the over-current pulses has been analysed. We have studied the recovery behaviour under two different conditions, in which the current was set to zero and to the operating current after the current pulses. These experiments simulated the conditions during an over-current situation in different electric power applications with special attention given to the behaviour of these coated conductors acting as in-fault current limiters.
