MgAl2O4 and ZnAl2O4 spinels have been irradiated by swift heavy ions (86Kr and 36S) simulating the irradiation by fission products for applications in the transmutation targets. The structures of ...unirradiated and irradiated spinel samples have been studied by NMR spectroscopy, with 27Al magic angle spinning and multiple-quantum magic angle spinning experiments. The parameters of fluence and electronic stopping power have been compared. For 86Kr ions, the obtained spectra are modified by irradiation: we observe a rise of the amount of aluminum in tetrahedral sites and a widening of the lines associated with the different aluminum environments compared with those of the pristine samples. Site exchange in the cationic sublattice is then observed and can be quantified from NMR spectra, determining the inversion parameter. An inversion parameter of 0.77 is estimated for the MgAl2O4 spinel irradiated with 1013 Kr ions/cm2, for a value of 0.275 in the pristine samples. Moreover, a line attributed to aluminum in 5-fold coordination with oxygen is observed in irradiated spinel samples at the maximum fluence for krypton. These new aluminum environments can characterize a transition layer which could change toward an amorphous layer, increasing the electronic stopping power and/or the fluence.
A weight-of-evidence (WOE) framework was developed to evaluate potential effects on the aquatic ecosystem of Wabamun Lake (Alberta, Canada) associated with the release of Bunker “C” oil after a train ...derailment. The wide variety of stakeholders and interested regulatory agencies made it necessary to develop a consistent and transparent approach to assessing ecological effects on multiple ecosystem components within the lake with the use of a large number of lines of evidence (LOEs). Consequently, a scalable WOE framework was necessary to integrate the findings of 38 different LOEs. A priori and a posteriori weighting factors were applied to each individual LOE, and a combination of numeric and nonnumeric rating systems was used to integrate LOEs into an overall WOE conclusion for 5 different ecosystem components. We provide guidance regarding the development of a WOE framework and emphasize techniques that enhance the application of best professional judgement during the WOE process.
Raman, 11B Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and X-ray Photoelectron (XPS) spectroscopy investigations have been made on a series of β-irradiated aluminoborosilicate glasses. This work shows the ...following changes of the glass structure under β-irradiation: (i) an increase of glass polymerization, (ii) an increase of boron in a trigonal environment and (iii) no modification in the aluminum environment during irradiation. These glass modifications under β-irradiation can be correlated with the migration of sodium outside of the Si and B glass network formers. Moreover, XPS experiments show a strong decrease of the sodium concentration at the surface of these irradiated glasses. This study presents therefore strong evidences of migration and segregation processes of sodium during a β-irradiation in the bulk for these simplified aluminoborosilicate glass compositions.
Eleven patients were followed at the multidisciplinary facial cleft department from 1963 to 1993. Nine had orodigitofacial (ODF) I syndrome (Papillon-Leage, 1954) and two had ODF II syndrome (Mohr, ...1941). The authors observed seven median clefts of the upper lip, eight atypical cleft palates, nine lingual tumors, ten polylobed tongues, four ankyloglossia. All vestibular frenula were hypertrophied. Facial analysis showed five facial hypertelorisms, eight epicanthal folds, ten anomalies of the forehead. Nasal anomalies were constant with ten alar hypoplasia and four nasal curves. Syndactyly was the most frequent anomaly of the hand. Seven patients were mentally retarded. Transmission of ODF I is by X-linked dominant variable expression; ODF II is autosomal recessive. The difference in transmission means a precise diagnosis is necessary. Bilateral duplication of the great toe is characteristic of type II, but not pathognomonic. Hair and cutaneous anomalies suggest type I. The authors proposed a surgical treatment involving three operating steps.
Solid State Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) experiments allow characterizing the local structure and dynamics of oxide glasses and melts. Thanks to the development of new experiments, it now becomes ...possible to evidence not only the details of the coordination state of the network formers of glasses but also to characterize the nature of polyatomic molecular motifs extending over several chemical bonds. We present results involving 31P homonuclear experiments that allow description of groups of up to three phosphate units and 27Al/17O heteronuclear that allows evidencing μ3 oxygen bridges in aluminate glasses and rediscussion of the structure of high temperature melts.

This paper describes an audio video decoder for digital TV, digital set top box, and cable box. It contains an integrated, high performance 2D graphic engine and several display processors. The video ...decoder is a MP@HL decoder, which supports all ATSC/Grand Alliance standard formats. It can decode from several digital or analog sources, and the PIP feature is supported from any source. The audio decoder is an MPEG 1, 2, AC3 6 channels decoder with PCM overlay support. A standard definition display output is provided in parallel with the main display output, giving an auxiliary VCR output.
