The plastic microliter represents an emerging contaminant as well as multiple stress agent in the aquatic environments. Microplastics are found even in the remote areas of the world. Together with ...their occurrence in all environmental compartments, there is a growing concern about their potential of adsorbing pollutants co-occurring in the environment. Currently, little is known about this source of exposure for aquatic organisms in the benthic environment. Exposure conditions were set up mimicking the contribution of microplastics in different exposure routes. The potential biological effects were investigated in the model organism: the annelid Hediste diversicolor. Cellular effects including alterations of immunological responses, lysosomal compartment, mitochondrial activity, oxyradical production and onset of genotoxicity were assessed in coelomocytes while temporary and permanent effects of oxidative stress were also performed at tissue level. In this study polyvinylchloride (PVC) microplastics were shown to adsorb benzo(a)pyrene with a time and dose-dependent relationship. Results also indicated a marked capability of contaminated microplastics to transfer the model organic chemical to exposed model organism under physiological gut conditions and concentrated in tissues. The elevated bioavailability of the model pollutant after the ingestion induced a clear pattern of biological responses. Toxicity mainly targeted impairment of cellular functioning and genotoxicity in ragworm’s coelomocytes, while permanent effects of oxidative stress were observed at tissue level. Coelomocytes responded faster and with a higher degree of sensitivity to the adverse stimuli when compared with responses observed in whole tissue samples. The results showed that microplastic particles in sediments may play a significant role as vectors for organic pollutants. The highest adverse responses were observed in those ragworms exposed to sediments spiked with PVC particles pre-incubated with BaP when compared against sediments spiked with BaP and microplastics separately.
A growing concern about the depletion of marine resources due to fishing overexploitation and degradation of ecosystems has been demonstrated over the last decade. Monitoring the spatial and temporal ...distribution of fishing activities is an important tool for fisheries management which can also be used by other sectors such as fisheries science, public authorities, policy-makers and marine spatial planning. In this paper we introduce the first map of fishing activity at a Mediterranean scale of EU and non-EU fishing vessels, extracted using Automatic Identification System ship tracking data. Fishing activity maps were produced for three different years with a spatial resolution of 0.01° × 0.01°. As a main result, for the first time, changes of bottom trawl fishing activities between two consecutive years were map for the whole Mediterranean Sea. The results confirmed the suitability of this monitoring system to obtain reliable information on the extent of bottom trawl fishing activities.

Traditionally, growth patterns are described as constant throughout life using von Bertalanffy's equation. However, a change in growth due to a reallocation of energy during an individual’s lifespan ...is to be expected. Following this hypothesis, back-calculation measurements obtained from SoleMon survey data were used to fit and compare monophasic and biphasic growth curves for common sole in the northern and central Adriatic Sea. Moreover, individual variability in growth was considered through nonlinear mixed-effect models in which the individual parameters were considered as a random effect. The analyses performed in this study revealed systematic age-specific discrepancies in the monophasic curve and demonstrated that the fit of the biphasic curve was superior (Δ AIC: 329; Δ BIC: 310), confirming the theory that growth in size would decrease as a consequence of reproductive effort. Finally, since common sole is routinely assessed using models that rely on growth to derive assessment estimates and related management reference points, a stock assessment simulation was performed to compare the two growth alternatives. The results showed how the biphasic alternative was preferable to the conventional alternative and how the use of the monophasic pattern would result in an overly optimistic view of stock status (+40% in SSB/SSBtarget and −35% in F/Ftarget compared to the biphasic pattern), thereby increasing the risk of overfishing.

Fishery discard survival depends on multiple conditions; caution is essential when survival study outputs are employed to support management decisions. The study presents a stepwise ...procedure, devised to estimate discard survival, that accounts for the variability characterizing commercial fishing practices. The procedure was applied to the first survival study performed onboard rapido trawlers targeting Solea solea in the Mediterranean Sea. Undersized specimens collected during sorting were assessed for vitality; some were retained for captive observation. The main drivers affecting discard survival at the time of catch sorting (immediate survival) were identified and used to outline four different operational conditions set (scenarios). Immediate survival in each scenario was subsequently modified by applying a hazard coefficient of survival after 5 days of captive observation in relation to each vitality class, thus obtaining relative survival estimates following discarding. Temperature and air exposure duration were found to exert a major effect on survival, with catch weight and seabed type being additional important factors. The relative survival rate showed an aggregate value of 22.9% (10.5–33.4%). Scenario approach can enhance our understanding of the stressors influencing discard survival. The outcomes are discussed to explore the potential applications of the procedure to the identification of mitigation strategies.

Next Generation Sequencing was performed on 16 respiratory samples from occasionally employed within the Bangladeshi community present in Ostia and Fiumicino towns. Computational strategy was used to identify all potential epitopes for reference and mutated Spike proteins. A simulation of proteasome activity and the identification of possible cleavage sites along the protein guided to a combined score involving binding affinity, peptide stability and T-cell propensity.
Retrospective sequencing analysis revealed a double Spike D614G/S939F mutation in COVID-19 positive subjects present in Ostia while D614G mutation was evidenced in those based in Fiumicino. Unlike D614G, S939F mutation affects immune response by the slight but significant modulation of T-cell propensity and the selective enrichment of potential binding epitopes for some HLA alleles.
Collectively, our findings mirror further the importance of deep sequencing of SARS-CoV-2 genome as a unique approach to monitor the appearance of specific mutations as for those herein reported for Spike protein. This might have implications on both the type of immune response triggered by the viral infection and the severity of the related illness.
