Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) is a serious condition which impairs the achievement of the fetus' full growth potential and occurs in a natural and severe manner in pigs as a result of ...placental insufficiency. Reduced skeletal muscle mass in the fetus with IUGR persists into adulthood and may contribute to increased metabolic disease risk. To investigate skeletal muscle postnatal development, histomorphometrical patterns of the semitendinosus muscle, myosin heavy chain (MyHC; embryonic I, IIA, IIB and IIX isoforms) fiber composition and the relative expression of genes related to myogenesis, adipogenesis and growth during three specific periods: postnatal myogenesis (newborn to 100 days old), hypertrophy (100–150 days old), and postnatal development (newborn to 150 days old) were evaluated in female pigs with IUGR and normal birth weight (NW) female littermates. NW females presented higher body weights compared to their IUGR counterparts at all ages evaluated (P < 0.05). Moreover, growth restriction in utero affected the semitendinosus muscle weight, muscle fiber diameter, and muscle cross‐sectional area, which were smaller in IUGR pigs at birth (P < 0.05). Notwithstanding the effects on muscle morphology, IUGR also affected muscle fiber composition, as the percentage of MyHC‐I myofibers was higher at birth (P < 0.05), and, in 150‐day‐old gilts, a lower percentage of MyHC‐IIX isoform (P < 0.05) and the presence of embryonic MyHC isoform were also observed. Regarding the pattern of gene expression in both the postnatal myogenesis and postnatal development periods, IUGR led to the downregulation of myogenic factors, which delayed skeletal muscle myogenesis (PAX7, MYOD, MYOG, MYF5 and DES). Altogether, growth restriction in utero affects muscle fiber number and size at birth and muscle fiber composition through the downregulation of myogenic factors, which determines the individual´s postnatal growth rate. This fact, associated with delayed myofiber development in growth‐restricted animals, may affect meat quality characteristics in animal production. Hence, knowledge of the morphofunctional phenotype of the skeletal muscle throughout postnatal development in individuals with IUGR, and the mechanism that governs it, may provide a better understanding of the mechanisms that limit postnatal muscle growth, and help the establishment of potential strategies to improve muscle development and prevent the onset of later‐life metabolic diseases.
In the present study, the morphofunctional aspects of skeletal muscle were evaluated during postnatal development in pigs with intrauterine growth restriction. The presence of embryonic myosin heavy chain protein isoform in adulthood and the downregulation of myogenic genes in the skeletal muscle were described for the first time.
A highly hydrophilic carbon nanomaterial was generated by using an electrochemical approach, and its structure, chemical composition, redox properties, antioxidant activity and effects on cells were ...characterised. It was found that the nanomaterial possesses a structure dominated by sp2 carbon atoms in a non‐ordered carbon network formed by small clusters (<2 nm) of a carbonaceous material. This material has an outstanding capability for donating electrons and an unusual ability to bind metal cations. Antioxidant activity assays showed that it displays a high scavenging activity against both 2,2‐diphenyl‐1‐picrylhydrazyl and 2,2′‐azino‐bis(3‐ethylbenzothiazoline‐6‐sulfonic acid) radicals, and a concentration‐dependent ability to protect mitochondrial lipids and intracellular thiol groups from oxidation promoted by external oxidising agents. Cell‐based assays also revealed that the nanomaterial has the ability to protect neuronal cells against oxidative damage and toxicity promoted by tert‐butyl hydroperoxide and amyloid‐β1–42 peptide. These results, combined with the attractive methodology for generating this hydrophilic carbon‐based nanomaterial, make this study the first step in addressing the therapeutic application of this new material.
A redox balancing act: A hydrophilic carbon nanomaterial was synthesised from graphite using an electrochemical approach. This material has a strong electron‐donor capacity, consistent with its exceptional antioxidant activity. This nanomaterial affords cell protection against the toxicity induced by the amyloid‐β1–42 peptide and oxidants, from which we envisage major breakthroughs in therapeutic nanotechnology.

Resumo Caso para ensino focado no dilema em torno da escolha do modelo de comunicação para a gestão da crise causada pela COVID-19, tendo em vista a necessidade e iminência de se manter um fluxo de ...comunicação ágil, transparente e eficaz em uma das maiores fábricas do segmento de pescados enlatados da América Latina, situada no Brasil. A história da GDC Alimentos completou 65 anos em 2019, à época a empresa possuía três unidades em Santa Catarina, Itajaí, com um negócio sólido e forte presença de mercado, mas que não estava imune ao poder devastador da pandemia do novo coronavírus. Um vírus que mudou globalmente as convicções e percepções sobre saúde pública e que em poucos meses impactou drasticamente na rotina das pessoas e das organizações. O caso possibilita a análise do cenário e identificação de alternativas para o direcionamento da empresa, bem como o fortalecimento da relação entre a liderança e os funcionários diante de incertezas e instabilidade ocasionadas pela crise. Propõe-se que o caso seja aplicado para cursos de graduação e pós-graduação nas áreas de Administração e Comunicação, em disciplinas como Gestão Empresarial, Gestão de Pessoas e Liderança Organizacional.
Resumen Este caso de enseñanza se centra en el dilema de qué modelo de comunicación adoptar para gestionar la crisis provocada por la COVID-19, dada la necesidad e inminencia de mantener un flujo de comunicación ágil, transparente y eficaz en una de las mayores fábricas de conservas de pescado de América Latina, en Brasil. GDC Alimentos, que cumplió 65 años en 2019, tenía tres unidades en Itajaí, Santa Catarina. Un negocio sólido con una fuerte presencia en el mercado, pero que no fue inmune al poder devastador de la pandemia del nuevo coronavirus. Un virus que ha cambiado globalmente las convicciones y percepciones sobre la salud pública y que, en pocos meses, ha impactado drásticamente la rutina de personas y organizaciones. El caso permite analizar el escenario e identificar alternativas para la dirección de la empresa, así como fortalecer las relaciones entre el liderazgo y los empleados ante la incertidumbre e inestabilidad provocadas por la crisis. Se propone que el caso se aplique a cursos de grado y posgrado en el área de administración y comunicación, en disciplinas como Gestión Empresarial, Gestión de Personas y Liderazgo Organizacional.

ABSTRACT A new spineless cactus genotype (Orelha de Elefante Mexicana) is being used in the diets of dairy animals raised in semiarid regions. However, little is known about its impact on goat milk ...production and feeding costs. The objective of this study was to evaluate the milk production and costs of feeding lactating Saanen goats with diets containing the spineless cactus Orelha de Elefante Mexicana (OEM) as a replacement for the Miúda (MIU) spineless cactus. Ten Saanen goats with an average initial weight of 50 ± 5.6 kg were assigned to two 5 × 5 Latin-square designs. The diets consisted of replacing MIU with four levels of OEM (0%, 11.5%, 23.5%, and 35%, on a dry matter basis) and a control based on Tifton hay. The diet with 35% OEM had lower costs per kg dry matter ($0.32) as well as lower daily feed costs ($0.29/d). The dry matter intakes and milk yields (3.21 kg/d) did not differ (P > 0.05) between the OEM replacement levels. The use of up to 35% MIU or OEM spineless cactus in the Saanen goat diet maintains milk production levels and decreases feed production costs.
RESUMO Um novo genótipo de palma forrageira está sendo utilizado nas dietas de animais leiteiro, criadas em regiões semiáridas. Contudo, pouco se sabe sobre seu impacto na produção de leite de cabras e nos custos com alimentação. Objetivou-se com este estudo avaliar a produção de leite e os custos da alimentação de cabras da raça Saanen em lactação recebendo dietas contendo palma orelha de elefante mexicana (OEM) em substituição a palma miúda (MIU). Foram utilizadas dez cabras com peso inicial de 50 ± 5,6 kg distribuídas em duplo quadrado latino 5 x 5. As dietas consistiram em substituir MIU por quatro níveis de OEM (0%; 11,5%; 23,5% e 35%, com base na matéria seca) e uma dieta controle com feno de tifton. A dieta com 35% de OEM teve custos mais baixos por kg de matéria seca ($0,32), bem como menores custos diários de alimentação ($0,29/d). A ingestão de matéria seca e a produção de leite (3,21 kg/d) não diferiram (P>0,05) entre os níveis de substituição de OEM. O uso de até 35% de MIU ou OEM na dieta de cabras Saanen mantém os níveis de produção de leite e diminui os custos de alimentação.

The aim of this study was to evaluate whether an association of elastic stockings and walking for a short period in the late afternoon reduces leg edema.
Volume changes of the legs of sixteen ...patients (32 limbs), who walked on a treadmill for 30 minutes using elastic compression stockings, were analyzed in a quantitative, cross-over randomized (in order of arrival at the clinic) study. They were submitted to volumetry using the water displacement technique and subsequently required to put on 20/30 made-to-measure compression stockings (Sigvaris). The patients walked on a treadmill for 30 minutes and after removing the stockings volumetry of the legs was again performed. Legs were assessed using the CEAP classification and divided into groups. Analysis of variance was used for statistical analysis with an alpha error of 5% being considered acceptable.
When participants walked wearing compression stockings, there was a reduction in leg volume. When the CEAP classification was evaluated, it was noted that there was a statistically significant difference for the CEAP C0, C1 and C2 categories of legs using stockings compared to those that did not use.
Compression stockings have a synergistic effect with walking in the late afternoon thus reducing edema of the lower limbs.
RESUMO: O objetivo deste artigo foi identificar e caracterizar as variações na mensagem que ocorrem na dimensão interacional, no que diz respeito à prática pedagógica escolar representada nos textos ...dos materiais curriculares educativos. Utilizamos o método qualitativo e a análise documental como procedimento. A teoria de Basil Bernstein foi o referencial teórico-metodológico, em especial, utilizamos o conceito de enquadramento no estudo. Os resultados obtidos indicaram que é perceptível a explicitação dos conteúdos de Geometria e Álgebra, no que se refere ao que ensinar e ao como ensinar, o uso sequenciado reprodutivo da tarefa matemática. Também com base nos resultados, identificamos que a mensagem em textos de materiais curriculares educativos caracteriza um forte controle do(a) professor(a) em relação às regras discursivas, seleção, sequenciamento, ritmagem e critérios de avaliação. Houve uma variação na intensidade do controle, quando professores e estudantes compartilharam a resolução da tarefa matemática. Além disso, o(a) professor(a) proporcionou uma comunicação aberta e um engajamento maior aos estudantes durante os processos de ensino e de aprendizagem.
ABSTRACT: The aim of this paper was to identify and characterize the variations in the message that occur in the interactional dimension, regarding the school pedagogical practice represented in the texts of the educative curriculum materials. We used the qualitative method and document analysis as a procedure. Basil Bernstein’s theory was the theoretical-methodological framework, in particular, we used the concept of framing in the study. The results indicated that the geometry and algebra contents are noticeable, regarding what to teach and to how to teach, the reproductive sequential use of the mathematical task. Also based on the results, we identified that the message in texts of educative curriculum materials characterizes a strong control of the teacher in relation to the discursive rules, selection, sequencing, rhythm and evaluation criteria. There was a variation in control intensity, when teachers and students shared the resolution of the mathematical task. In addition, the teacher provided open communication and greater engagement to students during the teaching and learning processes.
RESÚMEN: El propósito de este artículo fue identificar y caracterizar las variaciones en el mensaje que se dan en la dimensión interaccional, con respecto a la práctica pedagógica escolar representada en los textos de los materiales curriculares educativos. Utilizamos el método cualitativo y el análisis documental como procedimiento. La teoría de Basil Bernstein fue el marco teórico-metodológico, en particular, utilizamos el concepto de encuadre en el estudio. Los resultados obtenidos indicaron que se nota la explicación de los contenidos de Geometría y Álgebra, en cuanto a qué enseñar y cómo enseñar, el uso reproductivo secuencial de la tarea matemática. También con base en los resultados, identificamos que el mensaje en los textos de los materiales curriculares educativos caracteriza un fuerte control del docente en relación a las reglas discursivas, los criterios de selección, secuenciación, ritmo y evaluación. Hubo variación en la intensidad del control, cuando profesores y alumnos compartieron la resolución de la tarea matemática. Además, el docente brindó a los estudiantes una comunicación abierta y un mayor compromiso durante los procesos de enseñanza y aprendizaje.
RESUMO O presente estudo focaliza as diferenças entre as mensagens de materiais curriculares para professores que ensinam matemática e as mensagens de práticas pedagógicas que utilizam. Para tal, ...usamos dados secundários vindos da observação de duas práticas pedagógicas, nas quais, respectivamente, uma professora em exercício e um futuro professor utilizaram-se desses materiais. Dados de entrevistas também foram usados. A análise sugere que materiais curriculares para professores que ilustram apenas uma mensagem de prática pedagógica não mostram os conflitos com outras mensagens. Por decorrência, concluímos que, para dar visibilidade ao escopo de realizações contextuais com um material curricular, esse deve comunicar diferentes mensagens.
