Hydra is known for its natural occurrence, anatomical simplicity, intricate physiology, regenerative capacity, and ease of maintenance and manipulation in laboratory environments. It has proven to be ...a valuable model organism in various disciplines. Its applications range from developmental biology, stem cell research, animal physiology to environmental toxicology including ecotoxicology. The sensitivity of Hydra to a variety of environmental stressors and chemical agents such as metals, nanomaterials, and toxic organic compounds provides valuable insights into physiological mechanisms affected by environmental stressors and pollution, and Hydra can be of great use in environmental monitoring. Furthermore, since green Hydra lives in a symbiotic relationship with unicellular photoautotrophic algae, it is a suitable model organism for symbiosis research. Recently, it has become a popular model in holobiont research. The adaptability and importance of Hydra also extends to aquatic science and aquatic ecology, particularly in the context of monitoring and water pollution. Since the 1980s, Hydra has been increasingly used in various fields of research and has established itself as an important versatile model organism in numerous scientific studies. Hydra also represents an outstanding model in the fields of education and STEM. Hydra continues to be an important model in the 21st century, contributing significantly to our understanding of the biology of water and advancing freshwater research, and possibly finding its way to regenerative medicine and tumor pathobiology research.
We report the chemical substitution-mediated doping of silver atoms into Au10SG10 (SG: glutathione) catenane nanoclusters (NCs) in a controllable manner. Two levels of doping were conducted leading ...to two silver-doped Au10–x Ag x SG10 nanoclusters (with x = 0–2 and x = 1–4). Optical studies reveal that nanoclusters with a high level of doping (x = 1–4) show a blue shift in absorption and a significant red shift of ∼50 nm in the two-photon-excited emission spectrum with respect to pristine Au10SG10. The preservation of the catenane structure is confirmed by comparing the experimental and computational X-ray diffraction patterns and absorption spectra of Au10SG10 and its silver-doped analogs. In order to better address the structure–property relationship in such catenane clusters, further theoretical investigations were performed at the DFT level. A high-energy shift of the S1 state is evidenced in the calculated one-photon absorption spectra due to a larger s to d gap in silver caused by smaller relativistic effects in comparison to the gold atoms. Furthermore, the red shift in the two-photon excited emission band of the clusters is due to significantly larger calculated relaxation of the first excited state in nanoclusters with a high level of silver doping.
The aim of this systematic review was to explore the relationship between serum vitamin D levels and periodontal disease. The review followed Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and ...Meta‐Analyses guidelines. The focused PICO question was: Are serum vitamin D levels (I) associated with gingivitis or periodontitis (C) in healthy humans (P)? PubMed (Medline), Embase, Science Direct, the Cochrane library, and grey literature were searched up to 31 July 2017. Two reviewers independently selected studies and extracted data. Quality, risk of bias, and heterogeneity of the studies were assessed using the Newcastle‐Ottawa Scale. In total, 365 studies were identified and 24 were analyzed. Seven studies fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Four case‐control studies showed an influence of vitamin D and its metabolites on periodontal health status/disease. One interventional study suggested the proposed anti‐inflammatory role of vitamin D. Two cross‐sectional studies failed to show a relationship between vitamin D and periodontal condition. The literature on the effect of serum vitamin D levels on periodontal status remains scarce and controversial. Some data, however, support a “perio‐protective” role for vitamin D. There is a need for well‐designed randomized clinical trials to explore the possible anti‐inflammatory effect of vitamin D on periodontal health.

Congenital myotonic dystrophy type 1 (CDM1) is a rare neuromuscular disease. The aim of our study was to evaluate clinical variability of CDM1 and factors that may influence survival in CDM1. Research included 24 pediatric patients with CDM1. Most of our patients had some form of hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) (74 %), from mild to severe. Prolonged and complicated deliveries (75 %), high percentage of children resuscitated at birth (57 %) and respiratory insufficiency (46 %) with consequent hypoxia were the main reasons that could explain high percentage of HIE. Therapeutic hypothermia was applied in three children with poor outcome. Median survival of all CDM1 was 14.2 ± 1.5 years. Six patients had a fatal outcome (25 %). Their mean age of death was 3.0 ± 2.8 years. Poor prognostic factors for the survival of our CDM1 patients were: preterm delivery, resuscitation at birth, severe HIE, hypothermia treatment and permanent mechanical ventilation. Respiratory insufficiency was the main life-threatening factor. Our data clearly indicates the need to develop natural history studies in CDM1 in order to enhance the standards of care and to develop clinical trials investigating causative therapies in pediatric patients with CDM1.
Angiomyolipoma is a benign, mesenchymal, hamartomatous lesion often described in the kidney and may be associated with tuberous sclerosis. Nasal angiomyolipoma is an extremely rare tumor with fewer ...than 20 cases reported in the literature. We report a case of angiomyolipoma arising in the right nasal vestibule in a 68-year-old male with mild, recurrent right-sided epistaxis, and nasal obstruction. With the exception of arterial hypertension, the patient did not have any comorbidities. Gross examination showed a well-circumscribed, lobulated mass. On the microscopic level, it was composed of mature smooth muscle cells, thick-walled blood vessels of varying sizes, and islands of mature adipose tissue. Angiomyolipoma should be considered as a differential diagnosis for unilateral nasal masses, especially those situated in the nasal vestibule.
It is commonly believed that the appearance of the multilingual dictionaries of Vrančić and Mikalja as well as Kašić’s grammar ensured the legitimacy of the Croatian language among other European ...languages. However, some publications compiled by 16th century European linguists show that the Croatian language had already acquired this status within the scholarly and scientific network of learned men – the res publica litteraria. This paper presents several 16th century European scholars who shared information on the Croatian language and published it in their treatises: the French humanist Guillaume Postel (Linguarum duodecim characteribus differentium alphabetum, 1538, Paris), the Swiss linguist Theodor Bibliander (De ratione communi omnium linguarum et litterarum commentarius, 1548, Zurich), and the Swiss scholar Conrad Gessner (Mithridates sive de differentiis linguarum tum veterum tum quae hodie apud diversas nationes in toto orbe terrarum in usu sunt, 1555, Zurich). The eminent Croatian Latinist Bartol Đurđević also contributed to the beginnings of Renaissance linguistics with his book describing the suffering of Christians in Turkish captivity and in Turkish-occupied Europe – De afflictione tam captivorum quam etiam sub Turcae tributo viventium Christianorum (1544). Although his work was not essentially linguistically oriented, Đurđević provided some linguistic material to show how greatly the Croatian language (the so-called lingua Sclavonica) differed from Turkish. He supplemented his book with a Croatian-Latin glossary and the Croatian version of the Lord’s Prayer, which is also quoted in Bibliander’s and Gessner’s studies of different European languages as a sample text for the Illyrian language.
The paper describes the possibility of hybrid electricity generation in already existing wind power plants (WPP) by additional installation of photovoltaic power plants (PVPP) on individual wind ...turbines (WT). Wind turbines have the lowest generation of electricity in the summer months, while PVPPs have the opposite, the highest generation in those months. Connecting the PVPP to the existing WT (hybrid electricity generation) brings a more even generation and a greater degree of use of the infrastructure of the existing wind farms (HV/MV transformer station, medium voltage cable distribution...). This way the variation of generation in relation to the average annual generation is reduced, which reduces the problems of balancing electricity.
This research explores children's and parents' perceptions of parental mediation strategies of children's digital technology (DT) use. The sample consists of 31 parents and 30 children (ages 9 to 14; ...average age is 11) who participated in focus groups. The results of focus groups with parents and children showed that they recognize four similar types of strategies with slight differences. Children often do not recognize clear rules about DT use. Active mediation is perceived by children as co-use, while parents usually talk about the consequences of DT use and highlight balancing with other activities. Without a prepared media plan, parents describe mediation as "a struggle." The findings point to mediation being "a dynamic process" with children as active agents.
