Sr atoms. We use high-resolution clock spectroscopy to directly observe the onset of elastic and inelastic multi-body interactions among atoms. We measure the frequency shifts of the clock transition for varying numbers of atoms per lattice site, from n = 1 to n = 5, and observe nonlinear interaction shifts characteristic of elastic multi-body effects. These measurements, combined with theory, elucidate an emergence of SU(N)-symmetric multi-body interactions, which are unique to fermionic alkaline-earth atoms. To study inelastic multi-body effects, we use these frequency shifts to isolate n-occupied sites in the lattice and measure the corresponding lifetimes of the clock states. This allows us to access the short-range few-body physics without experiencing the systematic effects that are encountered in a bulk gas. The lifetimes that we measure in the isolated few-body systems agree very well with numerical predictions based on a simple model for the interatomic potential, suggesting a universality in ultracold collisions. By connecting these few-body systems through tunnelling, the favourable energy and timescales of the interactions will allow our system to be used for studies of high-spin quantum magnetism

Rapid advancements in the experimental capabilities with ultracold alkaline-earth-like atoms (AEAs) bring to a surprisingly near term the prospect of performing quantum simulations of spin models and ...lattice field theories exhibiting SU(N) symmetry. Motivated in particular by recent experiments preparing high density samples of strongly interacting 87 Sr atoms in a three-dimensional optical lattice, we develop a low-energy effective theory of fermionic AEAs which exhibits emergent multi-body SU(N)-symmetric interactions, where N is the number of atomic nuclear spin levels. Our theory is limited to the experimental regime of (i) a deep lattice, with (ii) at most one atom occupying each nuclear spin state on any lattice site. The latter restriction is a consequence of initial ground-state preparation. We fully characterize the low-lying excitations in our effective theory, and compare predictions of many-body interaction energies with direct measurements of many-body excitation spectra in an optical lattice clock. Our work makes the first step in enabling a controlled, bottom-up experimental investigation of multi-body SU(N) physics.

Therefore, we aimed to obtain evidence regarding the potential antioxidant activity of juices in human plasma.
A systematic review and meta-analysis was performed, which included randomized controlled trials that compared the use of fruit or vegetable juices vs. placebo or other beverages. An electronic search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, International Pharmaceutical Abstracts, and SciELO. The outcome measures extracted were related to antioxidant status, e.g., vitamin C, superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase (CAT) levels and reduction in malondialdehyde (MDA) and antioxidant capacity measured as TEAC.
Twenty-eight trials were identified (n = 1089), of which 16 were used for meta-analysis. No significant differences were observed between juices and placebo with regard to TEAC, SOD, and CAT. However, juices were superior to control in enhancing vitamin C and reducing MDA.
Natural juices are possible candidates for the management of oxidative stress. The effects of juices should be further investigated by conducting larger and well-defined trials of longer duration.

An experimental investigation focusing on the effect of dissipation on the evolution of the Benjamin–Feir instability is reported. A series of wave trains with added sidebands, and varying initial ...steepness, perturbed amplitudes and frequencies, are physically generated in a long wave flume. The experimental results directly confirm the stabilization theory of Segur et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 539, 2005, pp. 229–271), i.e. dissipation can stabilize the Benjamin–Feir instability. Furthermore, the experiments reveal that the effect of dissipation on modulational instability depends strongly on the perturbation frequency. It is found that the effect of dissipation on the growth rates of the sidebands for the waves with higher perturbation frequencies is more evident than on those of waves with lower perturbation frequencies. In addition, numerical simulations based on Dysthe’s equation with a linear damping term included, which is estimated from the experimental data, can predict the experimental results well if the momentum integral of the wave trains is conserved during evolution.
The nonlinear evolution of waves propagating on a spatially varying opposing current has been observed in a wave–current flume. Regular waves with different initial periods and different initial ...steepness, s (0.05 < s < 0.19), were generated and observed. Frequency downshift, even with very small initial steepness, was identified. As expected, it was found that opposing currents can have significant interactions with wavetrains. The ultimate frequency downshift increases with the increase in initial steepness. The evolution of frequency modulation was observed via the instantaneous frequency extracted by the Morlet-wavelet transform. The instantaneous frequency showed that often the process of frequency downshift can be local in time and gradual, but abrupt changes of local frequency were also detected. The presence of an opposing current can gradually block the primary wave energy and destroy the conservation of the wave action at downwave locations, thus increasing the asymmetric modulation and accelerating the effective frequency downshift.
One of the most important tasks in modern quantum science is to coherently control and entangle many-body systems, and to subsequently use these systems to realize powerful quantum technologies such ...as quantum-enhanced sensors. However, many-body entangled states are difficult to prepare and preserve since internal dynamics and external noise rapidly degrade any useful entanglement. Here, we introduce a protocol that counterintuitively exploits inhomogeneities, a typical source of dephasing in a many-body system, in combination with interactions to generate metrologically useful and robust many-body entangled states. Motivated by current limitations in state-of-the-art three-dimensional (3D) optical lattice clocks (OLCs) operating at quantum degeneracy, we use local interactions in a Hubbard model with spin-orbit coupling to achieve a spin-locking effect. In addition to prolonging interparticle spin coherence, spin locking transforms the dephasing effect of spin-orbit coupling into a collective spin-squeezing process that can be further enhanced by applying a modulated drive. Our protocol is fully compatible with state-of-the-art 3D OLC interrogation schemes and may be used to improve their sensitivity, which is currently limited by the intrinsic quantum noise of independent atoms. We demonstrate that even with realistic experimental imperfections, our protocol may generate ∼10−14dB of spin squeezing in ∼1 second with ∼10^{2}−10^{4} atoms. This capability allows OLCs to enter a new era of quantum-enhanced sensing using correlated quantum states of driven nonequilibrium systems.
A set of controlled high-Reynolds-number experiments has been conducted at the William B. Morgan Large Cavitation Channel (LCC) in Memphis, Tennessee to investigate the friction drag reduction ...achieved by injecting aqueous poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) solutions at three different mean molecular weights into the near-zero-pressure-gradient turbulent boundary layer that forms on a smooth flat test surface having a length of nearly 11m. The test model spanned the 3.05m width of the LCC test section and had an overall length of 12.9m. Skin-friction drag was measured with six floating-plate force balances at downstream-distance-based Reynolds numbers as high as 220 million and free stream speeds up to 20ms−1. For a given polymer type, the level of drag reduction was measured for a range of free stream speeds, polymer injection rates and concentrations of the injected solution. Polymer concentration fields in the near-wall region (0 < y+ < ~103) were examined at three locations downstream of the injector using near-wall planar laser-induced-fluorescence imaging. The development and extent of drag reduction and polymer mixing are compared to previously reported results using the traditional K-factor scaling. Unlike smaller scale and lower speed experiments, speed dependence is observed in the K-scaled results for the higher molecular weight polymers and it is postulated that this dependence is caused by molecular aggregation and/or flow-induced polymer degradation (chain scission). The evolution of near-wall polymer concentration is divided into three regimes: (i) the development region near the injector where drag reduction increases with downstream distance and the polymer is highly inhomogeneous forming filaments near the wall, (ii) the transitional mixing region where drag reduction starts to decrease as the polymer mixes across the boundary layer and where filaments are less pronounced and (iii) the final region where the polymer mixing and dilution is set by the rate of boundary layer growth. Unlike pipe-flow friction-drag reduction, the asymptotic maximum drag reduction (MDR) either was not reached or did not persist in these experiments. Instead, the nearest approach to MDR was transitory and occurred between the development and transitional regions. The length of the development region was observed to increase monotonically with increasing polymer molecular weight, injection rate, concentration and decreasing free stream speed. And finally, the near-wall polymer concentration is correlated to the measured drag reduction for the three polymer molecular weights in the form of a proposed empirical drag-reduction curve.
This paper examines initial asymmetric wedge-impact flows with horizontal as well as vertical impact velocity. The method of two-dimensional vortex distributions is employed to model the ...initial-boundary-value problem. The numerical analysis involves discretization of the body surface and an iterative solution technique. Experimental drop tests of a prismatic wedge were performed to gain understanding and provide data for comparison of initial water impact when asymmetry and horizontal impact velocity are present. The experimental investigation of initial flow separation off the wedge vertex (i.e., keel) during impact is described. Initial separation-ventilation of the flow from the vertex due to asymmetric impact or horizontal-vertical impact velocity is examined in relation to the present theory. Agreement between the data and the numerical predictions was demonstrated for small degrees of asymmetry and small ratios of horizontal to vertical impact velocity. The initial flow detachment from the vertex also revealed interesting hydrodynamic characteristics.
With the advent of PCR-based STR typing systems, mixed samples can be separated into their individual DNA profiles. Quantitative peak information can help in this analysis. However, despite such ...advances, forensic mixture analysis still remains a laborious art, with the high cost and effort often precluding timely reporting. We introduce here a new automated approach to resolving forensic DNA mixtures. Our linear mixture analysis (LMA) is a straightforward mathematical approach that can integrate all the quantitative PCR data into a single rapid computation. LMA has application to diverse mixture problems. As demonstrated here on laboratory STR data, LMA can assess the quality and utility of its solutions. Such rapid and robust methods for computer-based analysis of DNA mixtures may help in reducing crime.
