Communicable diseases represent a huge economic burden for healthcare systems and for society. Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are a concerning issue, especially in developing and ...underdeveloped countries, in which environmental factors and other determinants of health play a role in contributing to its fast spread. In light of this situation, machine learning techniques have been explored to assess the incidence of syphilis and contribute to the epidemiological surveillance in this scenario.
The main goal of this work is to evaluate the performance of different machine learning models on predicting undesirable outcomes of congenital syphilis in order to assist resources allocation and optimize the healthcare actions, especially in a constrained health environment.
We use clinical and sociodemographic data from pregnant women that were assisted by a social program in Pernambuco, Brazil, named Mãe Coruja Pernambucana Program (PMCP). Based on a rigorous methodology, we propose six experiments using three feature selection techniques to select the most relevant attributes, pre-process and clean the data, apply hyperparameter optimization to tune the machine learning models, and train and test models to have a fair evaluation and discussion.
The AdaBoost-BODS-Expert model, an Adaptive Boosting (AdaBoost) model that used attributes selected by health experts, presented the best results in terms of evaluation metrics and acceptance by health experts from PMCP. By using this model, the results are more reliable and allows adoption on a daily usage to classify possible outcomes of congenital syphilis using clinical and sociodemographic data.

The rising awareness and usage of Building Information Modelling (BIM), a methodology that allows for better information management and communication amongst the several stakeholders of a building ...project, opened the construction sector's door to digital fabrication tools that for years have been applied in many highly productive industries. 3D printing (3DP), unlike the conventional construction process that showed no signs of progress over the past decades, has already proven to be an interesting technology for Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC), enabling important economic, environmental and constructability advantages, such as a reduction in building time and waste, mass customization and complex architectural shapes. Consequently, universities alongside companies worldwide, are now developing and applying 3DP to building construction. However, with the growing adoption of new technologies in AEC, new challenges arise that must be overcome in order to guarantee the buildings' correct performance. Therefore, this paper presents a literature review conducted to highlight new developments regarding the building physics and comfort of additively manufactured structures. The research revealed that the focus so far was guaranteeing printability, structural soundness, safety and durability, which means that there are still key requirements to be met, including fire resistance and adequate hygrothermal and acoustic behaviour.
This study aimed to assess the implications of Zn enrichment in wheat grains as a function of contrasting genotypes, edaphic conditions and foliar fertilizers.
L. varieties Roxo and Paiva were grown ...in four production fields, and sprayed with ZnSO
(0, 16.20 and 36.40 kg/ha) Zn-EDTA (0, 6.30 and 12.60 kg/ha) and Tecnifol Zinc (0, 3.90 and 7.80 kg/ha). The heterogeneous edaphic conditions of the wheat fields were chemically characterized, it being found that soil properties determine different Zn accumulation in the grains of both genotypes. Foliar spraying enhanced to different extents Zn content in the grains of both genotypes, but the average of enrichment indexes varied among the wheat fields. Zinc mostly accumulated in the embryo and vascular bundle and to a lesser extent in the endosperm. Grain yield and test weight sprayed by ZnSO
gave the highest values in both genotypes, but the opposite was found for Zn-EDTA. Considering the color parameters, lightness and red-green transitions were found to be a conjunction of genotype characteristics, fertilization types and edaphic conditions prevailing in each field. It is concluded that the index of Zn enrichment in wheat grains is a docket of edaphic conditions, genotype and type of fertilization.
Rice (
L.) is one of the most economically and socially important cereals in the world. Several strategies such as biofortification have been developed in a way eco-friendly and sustainable to ...enhance crop productivity. This study implemented an agronomic itinerary in Ariete and Ceres rice varieties in experimental fields using the foliar application of selenium (Se) to increase rice nutritional value. At strategic phases of the plant's development (at the end of booting, anthesis, and at the milky grain stage), they were sprayed with sodium selenate (Na
SeO
) and sodium selenite (Na
SeO
). In the first foliar application plants were sprayed with 500 g Se·ha
and in the remaining two foliar applications were sprayed with 300 g Se·ha
. The effects of Se in the level of micro and macronutrients in brown grains, the localization of Se in these grains, and the subsequent quality parameters such as colorimetric characteristics and total protein were considered. After grain harvesting, the application of selenite showed the highest enrichment in all grain with levels reaching 17.06 µg g
Se and 14.28 µg g
Se in Ariete and Ceres varieties, respectively. In the Ceres and Ariete varieties, biofortification significantly affected the K and P contents. Regarding Ca, a clear trend prevailed suggesting that Se antagonizes the uptake of it, while for the remaining elements in general (except Mn) no significant differences were noted. Protein content increased with selenite treatment in the Ariete variety but not in Ceres. Therefore, it was possible to conclude, without compromising quality, that there was an increase in the nutritional content of Se in brown rice grain.
In the present day, there is an increasing demand for foods capable of fulfilling the nutritional needs of consumers, leading to a search for food products with a nutrient content able to promote a ...healthier lifestyle. In this study, an agronomic biofortification itinerary of Triticum aestivum L. (cv. Paiva) was conducted in an experimental field, located in Beja, Portugal, comprising foliar fertilization with ZnSO4 and Tecnifol Zinc in three different concentrations for each fertilizer along the plant cycle. The mineral quantification (S, K, Ca, and Zn) of whole bread wheat flour and refined bread wheat flour was measured using an X-ray fluorescence analyzer (XRF analyzer), whereas the micro-energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence system (μ-EDXRF) was used to quantify the minerals within the different regions of the wheat grain (embryo, endosperm, and vascular bundle). All the minerals presented lower values in the refined flour relative to the whole bread wheat flour, in which K had higher values followed by S and finally Ca with the lower values in both types of flour. The different minerals were spread around the various regions of the grain; however, they were more concentrated in the embryo and vascular bundle. The values are similar for both fertilizers, with a slight difference regarding Zn values, namely increasing with ZnSO4. To sum up, as the different minerals tend to accumulate in the embryo and vascular bundle, the whole bread wheat flour presents the richest option, promoting a healthier diet for consumers.

Abstract
Using a novel regional database covering over 200 elections in several European countries, this paper provides new empirical evidence on the political consequences of fiscal consolidations. ...To identify exogenous reductions in regional public spending, we use a Bartik-type instrument that combines regional sensitivities to changes in national government expenditures with narrative national consolidation episodes. Fiscal consolidations lead to a significant increase in extreme parties' vote share, lower voter turnout, and a rise in political fragmentation. We highlight the close relationship between detrimental economic developments and voters' support for extreme parties by showing that austerity induces severe economic costs through lowering GDP, employment, private investment, and wages. Austerity-driven recessions amplify the political costs of economic downturns considerably by increasing distrust in the political environment.

encodes for a paired-like homeodomain transcription factor essential for the correct establishment of the dorsal root ganglion - spinal cord nociceptive circuitry during development.
-null mice ...display gross anatomical disruption of this circuitry, which translates to a markedly diminished sensitivity to noxious stimuli. Here, by the use of an immunoprecipitation and mass spectrometry approach, we identify five highly conserved phosphorylation sites (T110, S119, S231, S233 and S251) in PRRXL1 primary structure. Four are phospho-S/T-P sites, which suggest a role for the prolyl isomerase PIN1 in regulating PRRXL1. Accordingly, PRRXL1 physically interacts with PIN1 and displays diminished transcriptional activity in a
-null cell line. Additionally, these S/T-P sites seem to be important for PRRXL1 conformation, and their point mutation to alanine or aspartate down-regulates PRRXL1 transcriptional activity. Altogether, our findings provide evidence for a putative novel role of PIN1 in the development of the nociceptive system and indicate phosphorylation-mediated conformational changes as a mechanism for regulating the PRRXL1 role in the process.
We investigate whether joining the European Monetary Union and losing the ability to set monetary policy affected the economic growth of Eurozone countries. We use the synthetic control approach to ...create a counterfactual scenario for how each Eurozone country would have evolved without adopting the euro. We let this matching algorithm determine which combination of other developed economies best resembles the pre-euro path of twelve Eurozone economies. Our estimates suggest that most countries’ economic growth was not significantly affected. There were some mild losers (France, Germany, Italy, and Portugal) and a clear winner (Ireland). The drivers of these economic gains and losses are heterogeneous. First, we find that Ireland’s economic gains are more modest when excluding profits and income earned by foreigners. Second, our results show that adopting the euro spurred government consumption and trade and deterred private consumption and investment, on average.

Abstract
Using a newly assembled rich dataset at the regional level, this paper provides novel empirical evidence on the effects of fiscal policy in the Eurozone. Our baseline estimates reveal a ...government spending relative output multiplier around 2, an employment multiplier of 1.4, and a cost per job created of approximately €30,000. Moreover, we find that a regional fiscal stimulus leads to a significant increase in private investment, productivity, and durable consumption. The labor share also increases, as do total hours worked driven by changes in the extensive margin (total employment), whereas the intensive margin (hours per worker) barely reacts. Contrary to the common policy narrative of strong positive spillover effects, we estimate only small regional fiscal spillovers. Finally, our findings reveal strong heterogeneities across economic sectors, states of the economy, and member states.
