DEAP-3600 is a liquid-argon scintillation detector looking for dark matter. Scintillation events in the liquid argon (LAr) are registered by 255 photomultiplier tubes (PMTs), and pulseshape ...discrimination (PSD) is used to suppress electromagnetic background events. The excellent PSD performance of LAr makes it a viable target for dark matter searches, and the LAr scintillation pulseshape discussed here is the basis of PSD. The observed pulseshape is a combination of LAr scintillation physics with detector effects. We present a model for the pulseshape of electromagnetic background events in the energy region of interest for dark matter searches. The model is composed of (a) LAr scintillation physics, including the so-called intermediate component, (b) the time response of the TPB wavelength shifter, including delayed TPB emission at
O
(ms) time-scales, and c) PMT response. TPB is the wavelength shifter of choice in most LAr detectors. We find that approximately 10% of the intensity of the wavelength-shifted light is in a long-lived state of TPB. This causes light from an event to spill into subsequent events to an extent not usually accounted for in the design and data analysis of LAr-based detectors.

Dark matter with Planck-scale mass (≃10^{19} GeV/c^{2}) arises in well-motivated theories and could be produced by several cosmological mechanisms. A search for multiscatter signals from ...supermassive dark matter was performed with a blind analysis of data collected over a 813 d live time with DEAP-3600, a 3.3 t single-phase liquid argon-based detector at SNOLAB. No candidate signals were observed, leading to the first direct detection constraints on Planck-scale mass dark matter. Leading limits constrain dark matter masses between 8.3×10^{6} and 1.2×10^{19} GeV/c^{2}, and ^{40}Ar-scattering cross sections between 1.0×10^{-23} and 2.4×10^{-18} cm^{2}. These results are interpreted as constraints on composite dark matter models with two different nucleon-to-nuclear cross section scalings.
We performed a time-resolved spectroscopic study of the VUV/UV scintillation of gaseous argon as a function of pressure and electric field, by means of a wavelength sensitive detector operated with ...different radioactive sources. Our work conveys new evidence of distinctive features of the argon light which are in contrast with the general assumption that, for particle detection purposes, the scintillation can be considered to be largely monochromatic at 128 nm (second continuum). The wavelength and time-resolved analysis of the photon emission reveal that the dominant component of the argon scintillation during the first tens of ns is in the range 160, 325 nm. This light is consistent with the third continuum emission from highly charged argon ions/molecules. This component of the scintillation is field-independent up to 25 V/cm/bar and shows a very mild dependence with pressure in the range 1, 16 bar. The dynamics of the second continuum emission is dominated by the excimer formation time, whose variation as a function of pressure has been measured. Additionally, the time and pressure-dependent features of electron-ion recombination, in the second continuum band, have been measured. This study opens new paths toward a novel particle identification technique based on the spectral information of the noble-elements scintillation light.

DEAP-3600 is a single-phase liquid argon detector aiming to directly detect weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs), located at SNOLAB (Sudbury, Canada). After analyzing data taken during the ...first year of operation, a null result was used to place an upper bound on the WIMP-nucleon, spin-independent, isoscalar cross section. This study reinterprets this result within a nonrelativistic effective field theory framework and further examines how various possible substructures in the local dark matter halo may affect these constraints. Such substructures are hinted at by kinematic structures in the local stellar distribution observed by the Gaia satellite and other recent astronomical surveys. These include the Gaia Sausage (or Enceladus), as well as a number of distinct streams identified in recent studies. Limits are presented for the coupling strength of the effective contact interaction operators O1, O3, O5, O8, and O11, considering isoscalar, isovector, and xenonphobic scenarios, as well as the specific operators corresponding to millicharge, magnetic dipole, electric dipole, and anapole interactions. The effects of halo substructures on each of these operators are explored as well, showing that the O5 and O8 operators are particularly sensitive to the velocity distribution, even at dark matter masses above 100 GeV / c2.
We report on the thermal neutron flux measurements carried out at the Laboratorio Subterráneo de Canfranc (LSC) with two commercial

CLYC detectors. The measurements were performed as part ...of an experimental campaign at LSC with
3
He detectors, for establishing the sensitivity limits and use of CLYCs in low background conditions. A careful characterization of the intrinsic
α
and
γ
-ray background in the detectors was required and done with dedicated measurements. It was found that the
α
activities in the two CLYC crystals differ by a factor of three, and the use of Monte Carlo simulations and a Bayesian unfolding method allowed us to determine the specific
α
activities from the
238
U and
232
Th decay chains. The simulations and unfolding also revealed that the
γ
-ray background registered in the detectors is dominated by the intrinsic activity of the components of the detector such as the aluminum housing and photo-multiplier and that the activity within the crystal is low in comparison. The data from the neutron flux measurements with the two detectors were analyzed with different methodologies: one based on an innovative
α
/neutron pulse shape discrimination method and one based on the subtraction of the intrinsic
α
background that masks the neutron signals in the region of interest. The neutron sensitivity of the CLYCs was calculated by Monte Carlo simulations with MCNP6 and GEANT4. The resulting thermal neutron fluxes are in good agreement with complementary flux measurement performed with
3
He detectors, but close to the detection limit imposed by the intrinsic
α
activity.

Knowledge of the low-lying monopole strength in C12—the Hoyle state in particular—is crucial for our understanding of both the astrophysically important 3α reaction and of α-particle clustering. ...Multiple theoretical models have predicted a breathing mode of the Hoyle State at Ex≈9 MeV, corresponding to a radial in-phase oscillation of the underlying α clusters. The C12(α,α′)C12 and C14(p,t)C12 reactions were employed to populate states in 12C in order to search for this predicted breathing mode. A self-consistent, simultaneous analysis of the inclusive spectra with R-matrix lineshapes, together with angular distributions of charged-particle decay, yielded clear evidence for excess monopole strength at Ex≈9 MeV which is highly collective. Reproduction of the experimentally observed inclusive yields using a fit, with consistent population ratios for the various broad states, required an additional source of monopole strength. The interpretation of this additional monopole resonance as the breathing-mode excitation of the Hoyle state would provide evidence supporting a D3h symmetry for the Hoyle state itself. The excess monopole strength may complicate analysis of the properties of the Hoyle state, modifying the temperature dependence of the 3α rate at T9≳2 and ultimately, the predicted nucleosynthesis in explosive stars.
Abstract Liquid Ar (LAr) and liquid Xe (LXe) time projection chambers (TPCs) are used for many applications in neutrino physics and direct dark matter searches. The performance of these detectors, ...particularly dual-phase ones, depends very strongly on the efficiency for detecting the far ultraviolet (FUV) scintillation light. Such detection is particularly challenging for LAr, in which the strongest scintillation feature is observed at a wavelength of 127 nm (175 nm for LXe). The current mainstream approach is covering the optical surfaces with a wavelength shifter, which absorbs de FUV light and emits at wavelengths that overlap with the optical band, where commercial devices have higher detection efficiency. This work presents coatings designed to enhance the optical properties of the detector materials and to be an alternative to the current technique. In particular, two possible coatings are proposed: narrowband and broadband FUV reflective coatings. The narrowband coatings are tuned at the FUV scintillation light. They provide a large reflectance at the design angle; additionally, these coatings are naturally transparent at longer wavelengths, which might be useful to selectively detect the wavelength of interest. Their performance is evaluated taking into account the refractive index of LAr and as a function of the angle of incidence. The same calculations are performed for an aluminium-based broadband mirror. Finally, the effect on reflectance of submerging both sorts of mirrors at liquid nitrogen temperature is presented.
The specific activity of the

decay of

Ar in atmospheric argon is measured using the DEAP-3600 detector. DEAP-3600, located 2 km underground at SNOLAB, uses a total of (3269 ± 24) kg of liquid ...argon distilled from the atmosphere to search for dark matter. This detector is well-suited to measure the decay of
39
Ar owing to its very low background levels. This is achieved in two ways: it uses low background construction materials; and it uses pulse-shape discrimination to differentiate between nuclear recoils and electron recoils. With 167 live-days of data, the measured specific activity at the time of atmospheric extraction is (0.964 ± 0.001
stat
± 0.024
sys
) Bq/kg
atmAr
, which is consistent with results from other experiments. A cross-check analysis using different event selection criteria and a different statistical method confirms the result.

SaG4n is a code fully based on Geant4 that we have developed to calculate neutron yields. The code is available in http://win.ciemat.es/SaG4n and works for Geant4.10.6 or superior. The improvements ...to the (α,n) yields introduced by the use of a single Monte Carlo code, fully developed in Geant4, are presented. Neutrons are a potential source of background for all rare-event searches, and is specially relevant for WIMP searches with liquid argon, where they are the only source of irreducible background together with the yet-negligible coherent neutrino scattering. The precision of the neutron yield is critical to evaluate the discovery potential of coming experiments and to reduce systematic effects in current data. We present the result of evaluating the neutron yield for three different cases and show the sizable effect of interfaces between materials with high (α,n) cross section and materials with small mass which contribution to the neutron budget is often considered negligible.
