Contemporary ultrafast science requires reliable sources of high-energy few-cycle light pulses. Currently two methods are capable of generating such pulses: post compression of short laser pulses and ...optical parametric chirped-pulse amplification (OPCPA). Here we give a comprehensive overview on the post-compression technology based on optical Kerr-effect or ionization, with particular emphasis on energy and power scaling. Relevant types of post compression techniques are discussed including free propagation in bulk materials, multiple-plate continuum generation, multi-pass cells, filaments, photonic-crystal fibers, hollow-core fibers and self-compression techniques. We provide a short theoretical overview of the physics as well as an in-depth description of existing experimental realizations of post compression, especially those that can provide few-cycle pulse duration with mJ-scale pulse energy. The achieved experimental performances of these methods are compared in terms of important figures of merit such as pulse energy, pulse duration, peak power and average power. We give some perspectives at the end to emphasize the expected future trends of this technology.
Here, we measured the concentrations of several ions in cultivated Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, and analyzed their effects on polymer formation by the actin homologue MreB. We measured ...potassium, sodium, chloride, calcium and magnesium ion concentrations in Leptospira interrogans, Bacillus subtilis and Escherichia coli. Intracellular ionic strength contributed from these ions varied within the 130-273 mM range. The intracellular sodium ion concentration range was between 122 and 296 mM and the potassium ion concentration range was 5 and 38 mM. However, the levels were significantly influenced by extracellular ion levels. L. interrogans, Rickettsia rickettsii and E. coli MreBs were heterologously expressed and purified from E. coli using a novel filtration method to prepare MreB polymers. The structures and stability of Alexa-488 labeled MreB polymers, under varying ionic strength conditions, were investigated by confocal microscopy and MreB polymerization rates were assessed by measuring light scattering. MreB polymerization was fastest in the presence of monovalent cations in the 200-300 mM range. MreB filaments showed high stability in this concentration range and formed large assemblies of tape-like bundles that transformed to extensive sheets at higher ionic strengths. Changing the calcium concentration from 0.2 to 0 mM and then to 2 mM initialized rapid remodelling of MreB polymers.
The description of the feedback mechanism is one of the crucial points in the understanding of self-sustained flow oscillations, such as the edge tone or the cavity tone. In this paper a new model ...for the edge tone, using linear adjoint modes is proposed for low speeds, when acoustic effects are negligible. The two crucial points of the model are (i) a new relationship between the jet oscillation and the generated vortex at the edge tip and (ii) a new model for the effect of the generated vortex on the oscillation. The frequency corresponding to the optimum open-loop gain of the feedback mechanism was compared with experimental data and good agreement was found.
Microalgae cultivation could contribute to the achievement of several sustainable development goals (SDGs). However, cultivating Chlorella vulgaris, like any other microalgae, is challenging due to ...various biotic, abiotic and process related factors that can affect its growth and biomass productivity. Nutrient availability, particularly N and P, and their ratio play a crucial role in building cellular structures and maintaining metabolic processes, determining basically the maximum achievable biomass productivity under given circumstances. The present article aims to improve the N and P ratio to enhance the biomass productivity of Chlorella vulgaris microalgae as well as to characterize the biomass growth kinetics that can be used for prediction purposes. The results showed that the nutrient solutions prepared with increased nitrate concentration (T1 – N:P = 55:1 and T3 – N:P = 28:1) promoted chlorophyll formation and significantly outperformed the control sample (BG-11 – N:P = 35:1) with 192% and 183%, leading to higher biomass productivity with 1160 μg L−1 and 1103 μg L−1, respectively. Moreover, a strong positive correlation was revealed (0.81) between phosphate concentration and microalgae activity rate, indicating the role of phosphorous in energy transfer, resulted in stimulated microalgae activity rates with 71.2% and 70.66% in the phosphate-increased nutrient solutions (T2 – N:P = 14:1 and T3 – N:P = 28:1). In addition, an exponential equation was introduced to characterize the biomass growth kinetics, of which the theoretically achievable maximum chlorophyll concentration (CTAM) and the theoretical cultivation time (tcultivation) were determined for the tested nutrient solutions with variable N:P ratio. It was concluded, that the higher the N:P ratio, the higher the CTAM is, nevertheless the absolute concentration of these nutrients need to be considered as well. The introduced two key parameters could provide valuable information for decision makers regarding the optimization of growth conditions, nutrient supplementation, and harvesting, additionally decreasing the production costs and making the cultivation cycles more effective and sustainable.

The development of ultra-intense and ultra-short light sources is currently a subject of intense research driven by the discovery of novel phenomena in the realm of relativistic optics, such as the ...production of ultrafast energetic particle and radiation beams for applications. It has been a long-standing challenge to unite two hitherto distinct classes of light sources: those achieving relativistic intensity and those with pulse durations approaching a single light cycle. While the former class traditionally involves large-scale amplification chains, the latter class places high demand on the spatiotemporal control of the electromagnetic laser field. Here, we present a light source producing waveform-controlled 1.5-cycle pulses with a 719 nm central wavelength that can be focused to relativistic intensity at a 1 kHz repetition rate based on nonlinear post-compression in a long hollow-core fiber. The unique capabilities of this source allow us to observe the first experimental indications of light waveform effects in laser wakefield acceleration of relativistic energy electrons.

In a Quercetum petraeae–cerris forest in northeastern Hungary, we examined effects of litter input alterations on the quantity and quality soil carbon stocks and soil CO2 emissions. Treatments at the ...Síkfőkút DIRT (Detritus Input and Removal Treatments) experimental site include adding (by doubling) of either leaf litter (DL) or wood (DW) (including branches, twigs, bark), and removing all aboveground litter (NL), all root inputs by trenching (NR), or removing all litter inputs (NI). Within 4 years we saw a significant decrease in soil carbon (C) concentrations in the upper 15 cm for root exclusion plots. Decreases in C for the litter exclusion treatments appeared later, and were smaller than declines in root exclusion plots, highlighting the role of root detritus in the formation of soil organic matter in this forest. By year 8 of the experiment, surface soil C concentrations were lower than Control plots by 32% in NI, 23% in NR and 19% in NL. Increases in soil C in litter addition treatments were less than C losses from litter exclusion treatments, with surface C increasing by 12% in DL and 6% in DW. Detritus additions and removals had significant effects on soil microclimate, with decreases in seasonal variations in soil temperature (between summer and winter) in Double Litter plots but enhanced seasonal variation in detritus exclusion plots. Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions were most influenced by detritus input quantity and soil organic matter concentration when soils were warm and moist. Clearly changes in detritus inputs from altered forest productivity, as well as altered litter impacts on soil microclimate, must be included in models of soil carbon fluxes and pools with expected future changes in climate.

The synergy between climate change, eutrophication, and biological invasion is threatening for native submerged plants in many ways. The response of submerged plants to these changes is a key factor ...that determines the outcome of biological invasion. In order to explain the invasion successes, we investigated the combined effects of climate change and eutrophication‐related environmental factors (temperature, light, and nutrients) on the trait responses of a native (Myriophyllum spicatum) and an alien (Cabomba caroliniana) submerged species. In a factorial design, we cultivated the two species in aquaria containing low (0.5 mg N L−1, 0.05 mg P L−1) and high (2 mg N L−1, 0.2 mg P L−1) nutrient concentrations, incubated at four light intensities (average 25, 67, 230, and 295 μmol m−2 s−1 PAR photon flux density) under two temperature levels (21.5 and 27.5 ± 0.5°C). We used four invasion‐related functional traits (relative growth rate (RGR), specific leaf area (SLA), leaf dry matter content (LDMC), and nitrogen to carbon ratio (N:C molar ratio)) to measure the environmental response of the species. We calculated plasticity indexes to express the trait differences between species. Cabomba caroliniana showed significantly higher RGR and SLA than M. spicatum especially under low light intensity indicating that Cabomba is much more shade tolerant. Elevated temperature resulted in higher SLA and reduced LDMC for C. caroliniana indicating that Cabomba may have higher invasion success. Myriophyllum showed higher LDMC than C. caroliniana. Chemical analyses of the plant tissue revealed that although M. spicatum showed significantly higher N:C molar ratio, nonetheless, the daily nitrogen uptake of C. caroliniana was more than three times faster than that of M. spicatum. Results supported the idea that due to its higher shade tolerance and nitrogen uptake capacity, Cabomba likely has greater invasion success with increasing temperature combined with low light levels.
We investigated the combined effects of climate change and eutrophication‐related environmental factors (temperature, light, and nutrients) on the hard trait responses of a native and an alien submerged species (Myriophyllum spicatum and Cabomba caroliniana) from the same growth form. Our laboratory experiment clearly pointed out that invasion success of the alien C. caroliniana is higher than that of M. spicatum, due to its better shade tolerance.
The heterogeneity and complexity of symptom presentation, comorbidities and genetic factors pose challenges to the identification of biological mechanisms underlying complex diseases. Current ...approaches used to identify biological subtypes of major depressive disorder (MDD) mainly focus on clinical characteristics that cannot be linked to specific biological models. Here, we examined multimorbidities to identify MDD subtypes with distinct genetic and non-genetic factors. We leveraged dynamic Bayesian network approaches to determine a minimal set of multimorbidities relevant to MDD and identified seven clusters of disease-burden trajectories throughout the lifespan among 1.2 million participants from cohorts in the UK, Finland, and Spain. The clusters had clear protective- and risk-factor profiles as well as age-specific clinical courses mainly driven by inflammatory processes, and a comprehensive map of heritability and genetic correlations among these clusters was revealed. Our results can guide the development of personalized treatments for MDD based on the unique genetic, clinical and non-genetic risk-factor profiles of patients.Major depressive disorder is a heterogeneous condition with varied presentation of symptoms, comorbidities, and related genetic factors. This study aimed to identify clusters of major depressive disorder-related longitudinal multimorbidity trajectories and to characterize the clusters using genetic and risk factor data.
