To compare the morphology of different parenchymal cell types in healthy human parathyroid glands (HPGs) in cytologic smears with their structure on histologic sections and to establish criteria for ...their recognition in smears.
The HPGs of 47 subjects (27 females and 20 males) were incidentally removed during surgery on the thyroid gland. The tissue of glands with a normal macroscopic and microscopic appearance was analyzed in cytologic smears and on histologic sections.
In cytologic smears (as well on histologic sections), dark and light chief cells predominated. Dark chief cells, which were more numerous than light ones, had a smaller nucleus without a visible nucleolus. The nucleus of light chief cells was larger with 1 or 2 nucleoli visible. The cytoplasm of both types of chief cells was poorly defined, grey-blue and often vacuolated. In the smears, the cytoplasm of oxyphilic cells was dense, gray-rose and well defined. In dark oxyphilic cells, the nuclei were smaller and without a visible nucleolus. Light oxyphilic cells had a larger nucleus and visible nucleolus.
The identification and distribution of 4 parenchymal cell subtypes in the smears of pathologically altered HPGs may yield insights into the possible role of these cells in a specific disease.

They are responsible for the occurrence of specific craniofacial characteristics in different races or populations within the same race. The present study investigates the possible differences of the basic head and face shapes between the Croatian and Syrian populations. The sample included 400 subjects of both sexes aged 18-24 years and was divided into a Croatian and a Syrian group with 200 subjects each. Six variables defined according to Martin and Saller were measured by standard anthropometric instruments. The results of the study demonstrated statistically significant differences between our subjects in all variables except face width. The dolichocephalic head type and the mesoprosopic face type were predominant in the Croatian population, while the brachycephalic head type and the euryprosopic face type dominated in the Syrian population.
Whereas lymph vessels in some endocrine glands have been thoroughly investigated, data on these vessels in human parathyroid glands are often contradictory and deficient in available literature. ...Therefore, the aim of this study was to histomorphologically investigate whether lymph vessels could be found in human parathyroid glands postnatally and, if so, whether their presence was age- and gender-dependent. A total of 44 parathyroid glands from subjects of both genders, aged 4-90 years, were studied. The glands were divided into three groups. Those from the 1st and the 2nd age group demonstrated similar morphological structure of parenchyma with predominant chief cells with pale-staining cytoplasm, while the frequency of lymph vessels was lower in the 2nd group. Unlike in these groups, chief cells with dark- staining cytoplasm predominated in the glandular parenchyma of the 3rd age group where lymph vessels were not found in any of the examined glands. The frequency of lymph vessels in parathyroid glands was almost the same for both genders. Histomorphologic occurrence of lymph vessels coincided with the presence of endocrine cells with pale-staining cytoplasm, which allowed the assumption that lymph vessels were also one of the signs of functional activity of human parathyroid glands.
The effects of exogenous testosterone on various testicular variables has become of increasing significance because of its potential use in male contraception. For this reason, high doses of two ...testosterone esters testosterone propionate (TP) and testosterone enanthate (TE) were used in a study of their influence on the morphology, length and curvature of the seminiferous tubules of the rat testis, and on cytological smears of the seminiferous tubules epithelium. TP was given for 14 days (3 mg/100 g body weight, i.m.) to assess the acute effects of testosterone on the seminiferous tubules. TE was administered for 60 days (in the same manner as TP) to study possible chronic effects on the rat testis. After TP and TE treatment the seminiferous tubule epithelium showed disorganization and desquamation of spermatogenic cells. In the TP-treated testes the tubules lined with Sertoli cells only were observed. The values for the length and curvature of seminiferous tubules of the TP- and TE-treated rats were significantly reduced (p < 0.001). All these changes were observed earlier in the TP-treated than in the TE-treated animals. In cytological smears of the testis of the TP- and TE-treated rats an increase of vacuoles and residual bodies in Sertoli cell cytoplasm was noted. In addition, a reduction of spermatogenic cells, particularly sperms, was manifest in the smears after treatment. Large groups of Sertoli cells were seen in the smears from these testes.

Tijekom ovog istraživanja proučavana je struktura acinusa, kanalnog sustava i veziva zaušne žlijezde štakora nakon različitih razdoblja po odstranjenju muške spolne žlijezde (orhidektomije). Zreli ...štakori soja Fisher usmrćeni su 12 sati te 3, 8, 15, 30 i 60 dana poslije orhidektomije. Nakon odstranjenja zaušnih žlijezdi, histološki rezovi su stereološki analizirani pomoću Weibel-ove mnogonamjeneske testne mrežice. U usporedbi s kontrolom, volumen acinusa zaušne žlijezde (u mm3 tkiva) orhidektomiranih štakora bio je značajno snižen, dok je volumen vezivnog tkiva (u mm3 tkiva) bio značajno povećan od 8-og pa sve do 60-og dana pokusa. Značajno smanjenje volumena kanalnog sustava (u mm3 tkiva) moglo se otkriti tek 60 dana nakon orhidektomije. Morfometrijska analiza također je pokazala da dolazi do značajnog skraćenja intralobularnog kanalnog sustava (u mm3 tkiva) u razdoblju od 8-og do 60-og dana nakon operacije. Skraćenje interlobularnih kanala moglo se zabilježiti u orhidektomiranih štakora usmrćenih samo 8-og i 15-og dana pokusa. Ovo skraćenje kanalnog sustava kao i promjene na acinusima i vezivnom tkivu zaušne žlijezde štakora mogli bi biti uzrokovani nedostatkom testosterona ili neke druge tvari koja je ovisna o androgenima, kao npr. epidermalnog čimbenika rasta (EGF).
Istraživana je reakcija okolnog tkiva na različite implantirane biološke materijale (različite vrste hrskavice) kao i na sintetički implantat Silastic® u kunića. Ova reakcija je procjenjivana ...analizom makroskopskih i mikroskopskih promjena te morfometrijskom analizom tkiva. Implantirani materijali su istraživani da bi se utvrdila njihova možebitna praktična primjena u rekonstruktivnoj kirurgiji nosa. Rezultati ovih makroskopskih, histomorfoloških i morfometrijskih istraživanja pokazuju da bi u praktičnoj primjeni trebalo dati prednost biološkim materijalima pred umjetnim Silasticom®.
