Abstract Neurofilaments are major protein constituents of the brain, but are particularly abundant in specific subpopulations of neurons and likely have a key role in the regulation of axonal ...calibre. Neurofilament proteins may also be involved in the transformation of the neuronal cytoskeleton leading to substantial tau pathology in axons damaged by Aβ, subsequently leading to neurofibrillary pathology in their cell bodies of origin. An understanding of neurofilamentous changes in axons and subsequent tau pathology may provide insight into how Aβ pathology may stimulate an aberrant plasticity-related response of damaged neurons, leading to the progressive and degenerative changes in the neuronal cytoskeleton that result in synapse loss and neuronal degeneration.
Prior authors have described a variety of ways to incorporate spirituality into graduate management education. This article reports on a graduate course approaching the topic from a different vantage ...point: helping students build their capacity to work respectfully with religious and spiritual diversity in the workplace (Hicks, 2002). First, students were challenged to examine the nature of religious diversity in the workplace, including workplaces which purport to incorporate spirituality. Next, after reviewing the legal requirements as a minimum standard, students were challenged to formulate an informed stance on the role of spirituality in the workplace. Finally, students were asked to reflect on the beliefs that inform their leadership, including their source and effect. By helping students articulate their own beliefs respectfully and formulate an informed approach to spiritual diversity, the course modeled the desired outcome: leaders who can honor and respect the beliefs of others while simultaneously embracing their own.

Methods
Survey of dairy farms from Rochester and the surrounding farming area.
Results
The response rate was 39% (58/150). Many dairy producers were not meeting the current industry recommendations in the following areas: (1) delayed access to pellets and roughage, (2) failing to provide access to water from birth, (3) delayed disbudding of calves, (4) delayed timing of booster vaccinations, (5) weaning based on age alone, (6) failing to isolate sick calves and (7) early sale age of excess calves.
Conclusion
The results from this survey highlight the need for greater awareness of industry standards for calf husbandry and weaning.
Transcranial focused ultrasound (FUS) is a non-invasive technique for therapy and study of brain neural activation. Here we report on the design and characterization of a new MR-guided FUS transducer ...for neuromodulation in non-human primates at 650 kHz. The array is randomized with 128 elements 6.6 mm in diameter, radius of curvature 7.2 cm, opening diameter 10.3 cm (focal ratio 0.7), and 46% coverage. Simulations were used to optimize transducer geometry with respect to focus size, grating lobes, and directivity. Focus size and grating lobes during electronic steering were quantified using hydrophone measurements in water and a three-axis stage. A novel combination of optical tracking and acoustic mapping enabled measurement of the 3D pressure distribution in the cortical region of an ex vivo skull to within ~3.5 mm of the surface, and allowed accurate modelling of the experiment via non-homogeneous 3D acoustic simulations. The data demonstrates acoustic focusing beyond the skull bone, with the focus slightly broadened and shifted proximal to the skull. The fabricated design is capable of targeting regions within the S1 sensorimotor cortex of macaques.
Diabetic retinopathy and diabetic nephropathy are common microvascular complications of diabetes. The kallikrein–kinin system (KKS) has been implicated in the development of both conditions, and, in ...particular, bradykinin and its receptors have been shown to exert angiogenic and proinflammatory actions. Several of the key processes that underlie the development of diabetic retinopathy, such as increased vascular permeability, edema, neovascularization, and inflammatory changes, have been associated with the KKS, and recent work has shown that components of the KKS, including plasma kallikrein, factor XIIa, and high-molecular-weight kininogen, are present in the vitreous of people with diabetic retinopathy. The role of the KKS in the development of diabetic nephropathy is controversial, with both adverse and protective effects of bradykinin and its receptors reported. The review examines the role of the KKS in pathways central to the development of diabetic retinopathy and compares this with reported actions of this system in diabetic nephropathy. The possibility of therapeutic intervention targeting bradykinin and its receptors as treatment for diabetic microvascular conditions is considered.
This work extends the consideration of spirituality and leadership to the field of strategic leadership.Future development in the field of spirituality and leadership will depend on greater clarity ...concerning the level of analysis, and will require a distinction between personal and collective spirituality. Toward that end, a framework is proposed that describes how the personal spiritual beliefs of a top level leader operate in strategic decision making like a schema to filter and frame information. This function is mediated by the leader's constructive development and meta-belief and moderated by the organizational context and leadership style. This framework provides a starting point for considering the many expressions of spirituality in organizations and serves as a foundation for a multilevel theory of spirituality and leadership.
Escherichia coli O157:H7 is the largest cause of hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). Previous studies proposed that HUS risk varies across the E. coli O157:H7 phylogenetic tree (hypervirulent clade 8), ...but the role of age in the association is unknown. We determined phylogenetic lineage of E. coli O157:H7 isolates from 1160 culture-confirmed E. coli O157:H7 cases reported in Washington State, 2004-2015. Using generalised estimating equations, we tested the association between phylogenetic lineage and HUS. Age was evaluated as an effect modifier. Among 1082 E. coli O157:H7 cases with both phylogenetic lineage and HUS status (HUS n = 76), stratified analysis suggested effect modification by age. Lineages IIa and IIb, relative to Ib, did not appear associated with HUS in children 0-9-years-old. For cases 10-59-years-old, lineages IIa and IIb appeared to confer increased risk of HUS, relative to lineage Ib. The association reversed in ⩾60-year-olds. Results were similar for clade 8. Phylogenetic lineage appears to be associated with HUS risk only among those ⩾10-years-old. Among children <10, the age group most frequently affected, lineage does not explain progression to HUS. However, lineage frequency varied across age groups, suggesting differences in exposure and/or early disease manifestation.
This paper explores the connection between the labour market and child overweight status in Canada. The labour market is a social institution which plays a critical role in determining how families ...live their day-to-day lives, for example, how much time and which parts of the day are available for cooking, eating and exercise. Using longitudinal data from the Statistics Canada National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth, we find that a history of higher hours of paid work by mothers (but not fathers) is associated with a higher probability of being ‘at risk of overweight’/overweight for children aged 6–11. The policy implication we draw from this work is that additional support to better enable parents to engage in paid work without penalty to their own health or that of their children is clearly warranted.
PurposeThe purpose of this study was to examine the experience of strategic-level leaders whose spiritual beliefs or practices inform their organizational decision ...making.Design/methodology/approachUsing a phenomenological methodology, 25 executives were interviewed to understand their lived experience. All participants held executive level positions, engaged in spiritual practices at least once a week and described spirituality as important in their lives.FindingsThematic analysis revealed themes that pointed to the locus of spirituality in the lives of the executives (innate but not overt) and the types of decisions for which they turned to their spirituality (decisions concerning people). When facing these types of decisions, leaders described an additional step we named “executive discernment.” This additional step sought to establish a connection with the transcendent and was described as heightening their decision-making abilities, serving as a model or “North Star,” or guiding them to a decision.Originality/valueThis study builds on prior theoretical work and gives insight into a process not usually visible: executives' reliance on spirituality during organizational decision making. These insights highlight the potential benefits and provide specificity to the potential risks for leaders who turn to spirituality when making organizational decisions. These risks include an overconfidence in one's decision-making abilities, reliance on an authority inconsistent with organizational aims or failing to convince others of the wisdom of the chosen direction.
