In this paper we study a fully connected planted spin glass named the planted XY model. Motivation for studying this system comes both from the spin glass field and the one of statistical inference ...where it models the angular synchronization problem. We derive the replica symmetric (RS) phase diagram in the temperature, ferromagnetic bias plane using the approximate message passing (AMP) algorithm and its state evolution (SE). While the RS predictions are exact on the Nishimori line (i.e. when the temperature is matched to the ferromagnetic bias), they become inaccurate when the parameters are mismatched, giving rise to a spin glass phase where AMP is not able to converge. To overcome the defects of the RS approximation we carry out a one-step replica symmetry breaking (1RSB) analysis based on the approximate survey propagation (ASP) algorithm. Exploiting the state evolution of ASP, we count the number of metastable states in the measure, derive the 1RSB free entropy and find the behavior of the Parisi parameter throughout the spin glass phase.
We theoretically propose a synthetic frequency dimension scheme to control the spectrum of a light beam propagating through an array of evanescently coupled waveguides modulated in time by a ...propagating sound wave via the acousto-optical effect. Configurations are identified where the emerging two-dimensional synthetic space-frequency lattice displays a non-trivial topological band structure. The corresponding chiral edge states can be exploited to manipulate the frequency spectrum of an incident beam in a robust way. In contrast to previous works, our proposal is not based on discrete high-Q cavity modes, which paves the way to the manipulation of broadband signals.
Conflicting observations have been reported about the role of CTLA-4 gene polymorphisms in the clinical outcome of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). We have investigated ...three polymorphisms of the CTLA-4 gene (−318C>T, +49A>G, CT60G>A) in 133 donor/recipient pairs who underwent HLA-matched sibling donor HSCT for hematological malignancies. We found no association of the clinical outcome of the HSCT with either recipient or donor −318C>T and CT60G>A polymorphisms. At variance, we found a significant association of donor +49A>G G/G genotype with longer overall survival (OS; log-rank test, P = 0.04), and the number of +49A>G G-alleles in the recipient with longer OS (P = 0.027), longer disease-free survival (P = 0.036) and reduced relapse rate (P = 0.042). However, only recipient +49A>G polymorphism was retained as independent prognostic factor in a multivariate analysis, suggesting that the expression of CTLA-4 on the cells of recipient may be relevant for the clinical outcome of HSCT.
Estimation of individual intakes in dairy cows would be beneficial to select animals according to efficiency of milk production. The n-alkanes technique has been used to estimate intake by dairy cows ...in free stall barns, limiting faecal samples to one or two per day, but diurnal variation in the ratio of dosed to natural alkanes in faeces represents a source of error. We aimed to adapt this technique to estimate feed intake on a large number of lactating dairy cows housed on commercial dairy farms. Using a change-over design, six lactating cows fed a TMR diet were given a dose of 0.5 g/day of C32 n-alkane administered once a day as a drench (DRE) or top fed (TP). Feed offered and refused were weighed daily. After the lead-in phases, faeces were collected at 0700 hours, 1400 hours and 1900 hours on the last 5 days of each dosing period. Dry matter intake (DMI) was estimated from C31, C33 and C32 concentrations in feeds and in faeces for each dosing system and sampling time. DMI estimated from C31:C32 ratio was better correlated with measured individual DMI than estimates from C33:C32 ratio. For DRE, the best correlation was for sampling at 1400 hours (R2 = 0.96, P < 0.001), but estimated DMI for the 1400 hours sampling was much higher than the actual DMI. For TP, the best correlation was for sampling at 0700 hours (R2 = 0.83, P < 0.001). Feeding C32 n-alkane and collecting faeces once a day at the same time (0700 hours) represents a valuable protocol to measure individual intake on a large number of animals.
The study comprised 25 mature horses and incorporated five dietary treatments; a nega tive control (C: 0.085 mg Se/kg DM), 3 levels of Se yeast supplementation, obtained from Saccharomyces cerevisiae ...CNCM I-3060 (OS2, OS3 and OS4: 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4 mg Se/kg DM respectively) and one positive control supplemented with Na selenite (IS3: 0.3 mg Se/kg DM). Diets were offered for 112 days. Total Se, proportion of total Se comprised as selenomethionine (SeMet) or selenocysteine (SeCys) of pooled samples of blood and plasma for each treatment at d 0.56 and 112 were determined. Total Se and SeCys increased both in blood and plasma during the trial in all treatments supplemented with Se; these increases were proportional to the level of dietary Se supplementation. The SeMet increased only in treatments supplemented with Se yeast, with increases proportional to the level of dietary Se supplementation. In Se yeast horses the proportion of total Se comprised as SeMet accounted for 20 and 14% of total Se increase in blood and plasma respectively; in IS3 only accounted for 5 and 3% respectively. These results seem support the view that SeMet is a non-specific form of Se that is metabolized as a constituent of the methionine pool, and can be considered as a storage form of Se in higher animals.
