A model for the scattering of ultrasound from breast tissue is proposed. The model is based on the use of non-Rayleigh statistics, specifically the K distribution to describe the backscattered echo ...from the tissue. A multiparameter test based on this model has been designed to characterize the tissue. The data from the B-scan images of the breasts of 6 different patients were analyzed using this model. The results indicate that the non-Rayleigh statistics seem to be useful in characterizing and identifying malignant, benign, and normal tissue regions.< >
We propose a new model for the RF ultrasound echo, namely the power-law shot-noise process. Based on this model, the in-phase and quadrature components of the echo are shown to exhibit 1/f/sup /spl ...beta//-type spectral behavior, in a sense that is defined in the paper. The envelope also exhibits this type of spectral behavior, but with a different exponent. This result explains the experimental observations by other researchers of the power-law trend of the RF echo spectrum. Although the shot-noise model has been used in the past for modeling the RF echo, this is the first time that a power-law impulse response filter is used and that the resulting 1/f/sup /spl beta//-type spectral behavior of the RF echo has been investigated. The model parameters are linked to tissue characteristics, such as scatterer density and attenuation; thus, they have the potential to be used as tissue characterization features. The validity of the proposed model is tested based on a database of 100 clinical ultrasound images of the breast.
The compound probability density function (pdf) is investigated for the ability of its parameters to classify masses in ultrasonic B scan breast images. Results of 198 images (29 malignant and 70 ...benign cases and two images per case) are reported and compared to the classification performance reported by us earlier in this journal. A new parameter, the speckle factor, calculated from the parameters of the compound pdf was explored to separate benign and malignant masses. The receiver operating characteristic curve for the parameter resulted in an A(z) value of 0.852. This parameter was combined with one of the parameters from our previous work, namely the ratio of the K distribution parameter at the site and away from the site. This combined parameter resulted in an A(z) value of 0.955. In conclusion, the parameters of the K distribution and the compound pdf may be useful in the classification of breast masses. These parameters can be calculated in an automated fashion. It should be possible to combine the results of the ultrasonic image analysis with those of traditional mammography, thereby increasing the accuracy of breast cancer diagnosis.
Classification of masses in ultrasonic B-mode images of the breast tissue using “normalized” parameters of the Nakagami distribution was recently investigated. The technique, however, did not yield ...performances that were comparable to those of an experienced radiologist, and utilized only a single image for tissue characterization. Because radiologists commonly use two to four images of a mass for characterization, a similar procedure is developed here. A simple summation of the normalized Nakagami parameters from two different images of a mass is utilized for classification as benign or malignant. The performance of the normalized Nakagami parameters before and after the summation has been carried out through a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) study. The bootstrap procedure has been utilized to compute the mean and SD of the ROC area,

, obtained for each parameter. It has been observed that combining normalized Nakagami parameters from two images of the mass may help to improve classification performance over that from utilizing the parameters of just a single image. The performance of this automated parameter-based approach appears to match that of a trained radiologist. (E-mail: pshankar@coe.drexel.edu)
Numerous adult studies show a 30-65% response rate to azathioprine (AZA) or 6-mercaptopurine (6-MP) for significant perianal Crohn's disease. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether these drugs ...healed pediatric perianal Crohn's disease. Records of pediatric Crohn's patients were retrospectively reviewed for significant perianal disease treated with AZA or 6-MP for ≥6 months. The patient's perianal disease was reviewed and evaluated for fistulas, drainage, induration, and tenderness. In addition, the patients were given a score using the Irvine Perianal Disease Activity Index (PDAI). Patients were retrospectively scored upon initiation of treatment and after six months of therapy. Possible scores ranged from 0-20. Twenty patients met the study criteria. Five patients were considered treatment failures. One patient required a colostomy after 1.5 months of therapy, one developed pancreatitis, and three were noncompliant with therapy. Of the remaining 15 patients who were treated for ≥6 months, 67% had an improvement in drainage, 73% in tenderness, 60% in induration, and 40% in fistula closure. The mean Irvine PDAI was 7.67 ± 2.19 initially and 4.40 ± 1.72 after six months of therapy. The improvement was statistically significant (p < 0.001). AZA and 6-MP are effective treatments for healing significant perianal Crohn's disease in pediatrics.
The parameters of the Nakagami distribution have been utilized in the past to classify lesions in breast tissue as benign or malignant. To avoid the effect of operator-gain settings on the parameters ...of the Nakagami distribution, normalized parameters were utilized for the classification. The normalized parameter was defined as the ratio of the parameter at the site of the lesion to its average value over several regions away from the site. This technique, however, was very time consuming. In this paper, the application of frequency diversity and compounding is explored to achieve this normalization. Lesions are classified using these normalized parameters at the site. A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis of the parameters of the Nakagami distribution has been conducted before and after compounding on a data set of 60 benign and 65 malignant lesions. The ROC results indicate that this technique can reasonably classify lesions in breast tissue as benign or malignant.
Back-scattered ultrasonic signals provide scatterer structure information. Large-scale structures, such as tissue and tumor boundaries, typically create significant amplitude differences that reveal ...boundaries in conventional intensity images. Small-scale structures typically result in textures observed over regions of the intensity image. This paper describes the generalized spectrum (GS) for characterizing small-scale scatterer structures and applies it to analyze scatterer structures in a class of malignant and benign breast masses. Methods are presented for scaling and normalizing the GS to reduce effects from system response, overlaying tissue, and variability from noncritical structures. Results from a limited clinical study demonstrate an application of using the GS to discriminate between benign and malignant breast masses that contain internal echoes. Sections of rf A-scans in 41 breast mass regions were taken from 26 patients. A GS analysis was applied to determine critical structural properties between a class of fibroadenoma and carcinoma masses. Classifiers designed using significant structure differences identified by the GS analysis achieved approximately 82% true-positive and 10% false-positive rates.
Classification of breast masses in greyscale ultrasound images is undertaken using a multiparameter approach. Five parameters reflecting the non-Rayleigh nature of the backscattered echo were used. ...These parameters, based mostly on the Nakagami and K distributions, were extracted from the envelope of the echoes at the site, boundary, spiculated region and shadow of the mass. They were combined to create a linear discriminant. The performance of this discriminant for the classification of breast masses was studied using a data set consisting of 70 benign and 29 malignant cases. The Az value for the discriminant was 0.96 +/- 0.02, showing great promise in the classification of masses into benign and malignant ones. The discriminant was combined with the level of suspicion values of the radiologist leading to an Az value of 0.97 +/- 0.014. The parameters used here can be calculated with minimal clinical intervention, so the method proposed here may therefore be easily implemented in an automated fashion. These results also support the recent reports suggesting that ultrasound may help as an adjunct to mammography in breast cancer diagnostics to enhance the classification of breast masses.
Predators directly and indirectly affect the density and the behavior of prey. These effects may potentially cascade down to lower trophic levels. In this study, we tested the effects of predator ...calls (playbacks of bird vocalizations: Tyto alba, Speotyto cunicularia, and Vanellus chilensis), predator visual stimuli (stuffed birds) and interactions of visual and auditory cues, on the behavior of frugivore phyllostomid bats in the field. In addition, we tested if the effects of predation risk cascade down to other trophic levels by measuring rates of seed dispersal of the tree Muntingia calabura. Using video recording, we found that bats significantly decreased the foraging frequency on trees when a visual cue of T. alba was present. However, no stimuli of potential predatory birds, including vocalization of T. alba, affected bat foraging frequency. There was a change in bat behavior during 7 min, but then their frequency of activity gradually increased. Consequently, the presence of T. alba decreased by up to ten times the rate of seed removal. These results indicate that risk sensitivity of frugivorous phyllostomid bats depends on predator identity and presence. Among the predators used in this study, only T. alba is an effective bat predator in the Neotropics. Sound stimuli of T. alba seem not to be a cue of predation risk, possibly because their vocalizations are used only for intraspecific communication. This study emphasizes the importance of evaluating different predator stimuli on the behavior of vertebrates, as well as the effects of these stimuli on trait-mediated trophic cascades.
In the first part of this work 16, a wavelet-based decomposition algorithm of the RF echo into its coherent and diffuse components was introduced. In this paper, the proposed algorithm is used to ...estimate structural parameters of the breast tissue such as the number and energy of coherent scatterers, the energy of the diffuse scatterers, and the correlation between them. Based on these individual parameters, breast tissue characterization is performed. The database used consists of 155 breast scans from 42 patients. The results are presented in terms of empirical receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curves. The results of this study are discussed in relation to the tissue microstructure. Individual estimated parameters are able to differentiate reliably between normal and fibroadenoma or fibrocystic or cancerous tissue (area under the ROC Az > 0.93). Also, the differentiation between malignant and benign (normal, fibrocystic, and fibroadenoma) tissue was possible (Az > 0.89).
