During COVID-19 pandemic, healthcare workers (HCWs) have had high workload and have been exposed to multiple psychosocial stressors. The aim of this study was to evaluate HCWs in terms of the ...relative contributions of socio-demographic and mental health variables on three burnout dimensions: personal, work-related, and client-related burnout.
A cross-sectional study was performed using an online questionnaire spread via social networks. A snowball technique supported by health care institutions and professional organizations was applied.
A total of 2008 subjects completed the survey. Gender, parental status, marriage status, and salary reduction were found to be significant factors for personal burnout. Health problems and direct contact with infected people were significantly associated with more susceptibility to high personal and work-related burnout. Frontline working positions were associated with all three dimensions. Higher levels of stress and depression in HCWs were significantly associated with increased levels of all burnout dimensions. Higher levels of satisfaction with life and resilience were significantly associated with lower levels of all burnout dimensions.
All three burnout dimensions were associated with a specific set of covariates. Consideration of these three dimensions is important when designing future burnout prevention programs for HCWs.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of functional fitness and oxidative capacity on the nitric oxide concentration associated with hemodynamic control in older adult women. The ...sample consisted of 134 women (65.73 ± 6.14 years old). All subjects underwent a physical examination to assess body mass index, waist-hip ratio, body fat measurement by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry, and blood pressure (BP). Training status (TS) was evaluated by indirect determination of maximal oxygen uptake by a treadmill test using Balke protocol modified for older adults. Functional fitness was also evaluated through a “Functional Fitness Battery Test” to determine the general fitness functional index (GFFI). All participants were separated according to the functional fitness (TS1, very weak and weak; TS2, regular; TS3, good and very good). Plasma blood samples were used to evaluate prooxidant and antioxidant activity and nitrite and nitrate concentrations. The general results of this study showed that good levels of TS were related to lower levels of lipoperoxidation and protein damage, higher levels of antioxidant, and higher concentration of nitrite and nitrate. This combination may be responsible for the lower levels of BP in subjects with better TS.

A artéria de Percheron (AOP) é uma variante normal que irriga o tálamo. Os enfartes da AOP podem originar um espectro alargado de apresentações clínicas invulgares. O seu diagnóstico é dificultado ...pela conjunção de dois factores: falta de sensibilidade da tomografia computadorizada e falta de conhecimento desta entidade motivada pela sua raridade. Descrevemos o caso de uma doente com coma por enfarte da AOP. Pretendemos salientar a importância de considerar esta entidade no diagnóstico diferencial de doentes com défices neurológicos vagos de origem indeterminada. Reforçamos ainda a necessidade de baixar o limiar para a realização de ressonância magnética com o objetivo de facilitar o diagnóstico e diminuir a morbilidade associada.

Abstract The artery of Percheron (AOP) is a normal variant that supplies the thalamus. AOP infarcts may originate a spectrum of unusual clinical presentations. The diagnosis is difficult due to the ...lack of sensitivity of detection by CT scan and to the lack of acknowledgment of this clinical entity. We describe the case of a patient who presented with unresponsiveness due to an AOP infarct. Our report serves as a reminder to consider AOP infarct as differential diagnosis when assessing patients with unspecific neurological deficits of unclear origin. Further we reinforce the claim for a low threshold for MRI in patients presenting acutely with otherwise unexplainable neurological symptoms to facilitate diagnosis and decrease patient morbidity.
O cancro da mama é o mais frequentemente diagnosticado e a principal causa de morte por doença oncológica entre as mulheres em todo o mundo. A nível mundial foram registados cerca de 1.7 milhões de ...novos casos e mais de 521 mil mortes por cancro da mama em 2012 (1). Em Portugal é também a doença oncológica com maior incidência, prevalência e com maior impacto em termos de mortalidade na mulher. Segundo a Direção Geral da Saúde (DGS), a mortalidade por cancro da mama tem-se mantido estável, apesar do aumento significativo da incidência (2). Este fato deve-se simultaneamente a um diagnóstico cada vez mais precoce e à existência de abordagens terapêuticas mais eficazes. O resultante aumento da prevalência de mulheres com cancro da mama tem repercussões clínicas e sociais específicas que exigem uma atenção permanente aos cuidados de saúde prestados com impacto na qualidade de vida (QdV) das doentes (3,4).Sendo a QdV uma medida de resultados em oncologia, a avaliação dos cuidados de saúde terá ir além das variáveis biológicas englobando dados objetivos e subjetivos, tendo subjacente a avaliação da eficácia e da eficiência dos cuidados tal como é percebida pelas doentes (5,6).Os tratamentos atualmente disponíveis englobam múltiplas modalidades (cirurgia, radioterapia, quimioterapia, hormonoterapia, terapêuticas alvo), podendo originar complicações precoces ou tardias, a nível físico, psíquico e social, que têm inevitavelmente impacto negativo na QdV dos doentes e daqueles que os rodeiam (7– 11).No cancro da mama, a medicina evoluiu no sentido da preservação do órgão através de cirurgias mais conservadoras e de uma abordagem menos invasiva da axila, tendo por objetivo diminuir a morbilidade associada. Embora se registe uma melhoria assinalável com estas técnicas cirúrgicas, são diversas as complicações pós-cirúrgicas possíveis, a curto ou longo prazo: edema da mama, edema da parede torácica, linfedema do membro superior, trombose linfática superficial, infecção, dor, alteração postural, diminuição das amplitudes articulares (12–14).A radioterapia implica frequentemente uma deterioração da QdV sob a forma de cansaço generalizado que pode prolongar-se além da duração do tratamento sendo ainda comuns alterações cutâneas, transitórias ou duradouras, nas zonas submetidas a irradiação (15).Os efeitos secundários da quimioterapia dependem dos fármacos e doses utilizadas. Pelo fato de afectar, predominantemente, células que se dividem rapidamente, pode levar ao desenvolvimento de vários sinais e sintomas: ao atingirem as linhagens celulares sanguíneas levam à diminuição do seu número total em circulação, aumentando a probabilidade de infecções, de surgimento de hematomas e resultando numa sensação de cansaço geral; ao nível das faneras o efeito é geralmente marcado mas reversível; a atuação ao nível do sistema digestivo provoca falta de apetite, náuseas e vómitos, diarreia e mucosite, efeitos que podem ser controlados farmacologicamente; a nível hormonal poderão surgir sinais e sintomas como afrontamentos e secura vaginal podendo ocorrer irregularidade ou suspensão dos ciclos menstruais. Os efeitos secundários a longo prazo são genericamente raros salientadose contudo a possibilidade de surgirem neoplasias secundárias bem como alterações da sexualidade e fertilidade, complicações cardiovasculares e disfunção cognitiva associada ao tratamento com quimioterapia.
Panic buying and hoarding express common human behavior in times of crisis. Early in COVID-19, as the pandemic crisis intensified, toilet paper was one of the emblematic cases of panic buying. Using ...a Geographic Information System (GIS) to cross official per capita income data and real toilet paper transactions obtained from groceries spread around the city of São Paulo (Brazil), this study compares sales levels during the period in which panic purchases took place to the sales levels off that period. As expected, that data disclose noticeable panic buying. Regression analysis reveals that there is a significant positive correlation between average income per capita and panic buying. The results also indicate that panic buying happens in every income class, including low-income ones and contribute to enhancing the understanding of demand behavior during periods of crisis.
E-cadherin and P-cadherin are major contributors to cell–cell adhesion in epithelial tissues, playing pivotal roles in important morphogenetic and differentiation processes during development, and in ...maintaining integrity and homeostasis in adult tissues. It is now generally accepted that alterations in these two molecules are observed during tumour progression of most carcinomas. Genetic or epigenetic alterations in E- and P-cadherin-encoding genes (CDH1 and CDH3, respectively), or alterations in their proteins expression, often result in tissue disorder, cellular de-differentiation, increased invasiveness of tumour cells and ultimately in metastasis. In this review, we will discuss the major properties of E- and P-cadherin molecules, its regulation in normal tissue, and their alterations and role in cancer, with a specific focus on gastric and breast cancer models.
The development and identification of sugarcane clones with higher amount of lignocellulosic biomass are essential to increase the potential for generation of electrical energy or biofuel. ...Considering the potential for increased portfolio of products to be explored from the cane energy, the objective of this study was to compare the average results of biometrics, productivity and technological quality of 23 hybrids of cane energy with the commercial variety RB92579 (as a standard). Finally, we will identify energy cane clones of types 1 and/or 2 to become commercial cultivars. The experimental design was randomized blocks with three replications of 24 plots, where each plot consisted of 6 furrows of 10 linear meters with double spacing cycled from 0.9 x 1.5 meters. The evaluated variables were the number of stems per linear meter, stem diameter, dry and fresh matter and industrial quality. The results were submitted to statistical analysis using the Scott-Knott test for comparison of means. The diameter of stem in energy cane was lower (1.172 to 1.772 cm) than the average of sugarcane (2.302 cm). On the other hand, a greater number of stems per linear meter were found for 15 clones evaluated (average 24.19) compared to traditional sugarcane (12.5). All clones had low juice sugars concentration but nine clones reached fiber contents higher than 23.6%, representing a 42% increase compared to the fiber content of cultivar RB92579. The hybrids 1, 9, 11, 13, 16, 18 and 23 showed a better development potential with high tillering and high fiber content.
No presente trabalho, desenvolveu-se equação para predição do coeficiente de dispersão longitudinal (D L) em rios de médio porte, com vazões entre 16,20 e 98 m³ s-1, a partir de ensaios experimentais ...utilizando traçadores fluorescentes. A equação foi deduzida utilizando-se análise dimensional e ajustada aos dados de campo pela técnica de regressão linear múltipla. Em seguida, realizou-se a validação da equação testando-a em outra base de dados, diferente daquela para a qual foi desenvolvida, com vazões entre 19,57 a 48,54 m³s-1. Adicionalmente, foram comparados os desempenhos de outras quatro equações empíricas de predição do D L, utilizando-se três métodos comparativos. A equação desenvolvida apresentou ajuste estatístico adequado e bom resultado, com melhor desempenho geral quando comparada a outras equações propostas na literatura.
