Coatings based on plant by-products can contribute to the enhancement of raw material by preparing value-added products. In addition, the extension of shelf-life of eggs contributes to the reduction ...of food losses and decreases the use of refrigeration, energy demand, production costs, and consequently avoid the increase in the price of the final product. The rice protein concentrate (RPC) and plus Brazilian green propolis (GP), were used in the manufacture of coatings used to extend the shelf-life of eggs during storage for 6 wk at 20 °C. In this regard, some quality parameters of eggs were analyzed in this research. The coatings based on RPC and GP delayed the loss of internal egg quality, since avoided moisture loss through the pores of the eggshell. The weight loss increased (P < 0.001) during storage and uncoated eggs had the worst weight loss (5.41%) after 6 wk of storage and coatings of RPC (4.25%) or GP (4.08%), and RPC + GP (4.14%) solutions effectively reduced the weight lost (P < 0.001). In addition, uncoated eggs had the worst value of HU (58.54), albumen pH (9.51), and yolk index (YI 0.33) after storage (P < 0.001). Correlations were observed between the quality parameters evaluated. The improvement of the quality attributes showed the potential of using coatings, such as the RPC and GP coatings analyzed in this research.

Objectives
Specialized early intervention for psychosis can reduce the duration of untreated psychosis and improve clinical and functional outcomes. However, poor adherence to treatment is frequent. ...The literature on community treatment orders (CTOs) use in first-episode psychosis (FEP) as a means to improve treatment adherence is limited. In the context of early intervention for psychosis services (EIS), this study aims to describe (1) the frequency of CTOs utilisation, (2) the trend of CTOs use over time, (3) the timing and reasons for requesting CTOs and (4) the baseline characteristics of FEP patients on CTOs compared to those who were not.
Method
A 5-year prospective longitudinal study describing the use of CTOs among persons with FEP admitted to two urban EIS in Montreal, Quebec, from 2005 to 2013. At admission, and then annually for 5 years, CTOs data were collected through chart review. Baseline characteristics, assessed by patient interviews, standardized questionnaires and chart review, included socio-demographic data, illness severity, functioning and alcohol and substance use. Descriptive analyses were performed, and FEP patients on CTOs during follow-up and those who were not were compared using analyses of variance, chi-square test and multivariate logistic regression.
Results
Among 567 FEP patients, 19.2% were placed on CTOs. The main reasons for requesting CTOs were to prevent further deterioration in mental state, social functioning, harmful behaviours to self and others and homelessness. FEP patients on CTOs had poorer premorbid and baseline functioning, more severe symptoms and social dysfunction at admission, including legal problems and homelessness.
Conclusions
CTOs can be a tool to improve adherence to treatment, which is crucial for relapse prevention in FEP. However, since it is a coercive method that limits a person's fundamental rights, further research is warranted to assess its impact on patients’ lives, clinical and functional outcomes, as well as patients’ and carers’ perception.
The aim of this was to evaluate the function of vascular biomarkers to predict the need for hemodialysis in critically ill patients with COVID-19.
This is a prospective study with 58 critically ill ...patients due to COVID-19 infection. Laboratory tests in general and vascular biomarkers, such as VCAM-1, syndecan-1, angiopoietin-1, and angiopoietin-2, were quantified on intensive care unit (ICU) admission.
There was a 40% death rate. VCAM and Ang-2/Ang-1 ratio on ICU admission were associated with the need for hemodialysis. Vascular biomarkers (VCAM-1, syndecan-1, angiopoietin-2/angiopoietin-1 ratio) were predictors of death and their cutoff values were useful to stratify patients with a worse prognosis. In the multivariate cox regression analysis with adjusted models, VCAM-1 (OR 1.13 CI 95%: 1.01-1.27; p = 0.034) and Ang-2/Ang-1 ratio (OR 4.87 CI 95%: 1.732-13.719; p = 0.003) were associated with the need for dialysis.
Vascular biomarkers, mostly VCAM-1 and Ang-2/Ang-1 ratio, showed better efficiency to predict the need for hemodialysis in critically ill COVID-19 patients.
In the Amazonian rain forest, major parts of trees and
shrubs are covered by epiphytic cryptogams of great taxonomic variety, but
their relevance in biosphere–atmosphere exchange, climate processes, ...and
nutrient cycling is largely unknown. As cryptogams are poikilohydric
organisms, they are physiologically active only under moist conditions.
Thus, information on their water content (WC) as well as temperature and light
conditions experienced by them are essential to analyze their impact on
local, regional, and even global biogeochemical processes. In this study, we
present data on the microclimatic conditions, including water content,
temperature, and light conditions experienced by epiphytic bryophytes along
a vertical gradient, and combine these with above-canopy climate data
collected at the Amazon Tall Tower Observatory (ATTO) in the Amazonian rain forest between October 2014 and
December 2016. While the monthly average of above-canopy light intensities
revealed only minor fluctuations over the course of the year, the light
intensities experienced by the bryophytes varied depending on the location
within the canopy, probably caused by individual shading by vegetation. In
the understory (1.5 m), monthly average light intensities were similar
throughout the year, and individual values were extremely low, remaining
below 3 µmol m−2 s−1 photosynthetic photon flux density
more than 84 % of the time. Temperatures showed only minor
variations throughout the year, with higher values and larger
height-dependent differences during the dry season. The indirectly assessed
water content of bryophytes varied depending on precipitation, air
humidity, dew condensation, and bryophyte type. Whereas bryophytes in the
canopy were affected by diel fluctuations of the relative humidity and
condensation, those close to the forest floor mainly responded to rainfall
patterns. In general, bryophytes growing close to the forest floor were
limited by light availability, while those growing in the canopy had to
withstand larger variations in microclimatic conditions, especially during
the dry season. For further research in this field, these data may be
combined with CO2 gas exchange measurements to investigate the role of
bryophytes in various biosphere–atmosphere exchange processes, and could be
a tool to understand the functioning of the epiphytic community in greater
detail.
Effects of plasticizer types and whey protein concentrate (WPC) as coatings were evaluated on internal quality and shelf life of eggs stored for 42 days. Eggs were coated with WPC at 8 % solution ...combined with the plasticizers glycerol (GLY), sorbitol (SOR), and propylene glycol (PRO). The eggs were stored at 20 °C. Weight loss, Haugh Unit (HU), albumen and yolk pH, and yolk index (YI) were evaluated weekly from day 0 to 42 days. After, electron microscopy of the eggshell structure was performed. The data was submitted to the analysis of variance and the effects of treatment, storage time, and the interaction between these factors were evaluated. There was significant interaction between factors (treatment and periods) for weight loss (p < 0.0001), HU (p < 0.0001), albumen (p < 0.0001), and yolk pH (p < 0.0001), and YI (p < 0.0001). After 42 days, uncoated eggs showed greater weight loss (5.4 %), compared to WPC+GLY, (3.8 %), WPC+SOR (3.3 %) and WPC+PRO (3.9 %). Similar results were verified for HU at 42 days of storage. Uncoated eggs showed HU of 58.46 (B), while coated eggs showed higher values: WPC+GLY – 66.58 (A), WPC+SOR – 68.79 (A), and WPC + PRO – 71.53 (A). The plasticizers GLY, SOR and PRO, associated with WPC, demonstrated effectiveness in maintaining the quality of eggs throughout the 42 days of storage. However, WPC+SOR showed superiority in preserving quality integrity of eggs. This result can be related to the chemical structure of SOR, making the combination more efficient for storage.
Aims
To describe oral manifestations in children born with microcephaly attributed to congenital Zika virus syndrome (CZS).
Methods
Data was collected in semiannual intervals from 2017 to 2019, by ...oral exams of the children and interview with caregivers at a Public Dental Center in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. A single calibrated examiner performed clinical examinations.
Results
Of 38 eligible children, 34 were followed‐up from 12 to 30 months of age, 20 boys and 14 girls. The mean age of emergence of their first primary tooth was 12.4 months (SD = 2.9). By 30 months of age only 14.7% (n = 5) had complete primary dentition. Alteration in the sequence of tooth emergence was observed in 41.1% (n = 14). Radiographic examination demonstrated dental agenesis (14.7% n = 5). Dental developmental alterations (38.2%, n = 13), enamel defects (14.7%, n = 5), eruption cysts/hematoma (23.5%, n = 8), gingival bleeding (55.8%, n = 19), narrow palate, and bruxism (64.7%, n = 22) were also observed. No child had dental caries.
Conclusion
Children with microcephaly attributed to CZS presented oral manifestations early in life.
We assessed the association between body mass index (BMI) and sensory processing in 445 Spanish children aged 3-7 from the InProS project. Child sensory processing was measured using the short ...sensory profile (SSP); an atypical sensory performance was defined as an SSP total score <155 and scores of tactile sensitivity <30; taste/smell sensitivity <15; movement sensitivity <13; under-responsive/seeks sensation <27; auditory filtering <23; low energy/weak <26; and visual/auditory sensitivity <19. The BMI was calculated according to the cutoffs by the World Health Organization for children aged 0-5 and 5-19 years. We used multiple Poisson regression models with robust variance to obtain prevalence ratios (PR). No associations between children's overweight and obesity and the prevalence of atypical sensory outcomes were observed. A one-point increase in BMI was significantly associated with a higher prevalence of atypical tactile sensitivity (PR = 1.07, 95% CI: 1.02; 1.12). A statistically marginal association was also observed for atypical total SSP (PR = 1.03, 95% CI: 1.00; 1.07) and atypical movement sensitivity (PR = 1.05, 95% CI: 1.00; 1.10). To our knowledge, this is the first time the association between children's BMI and sensory processing has been reported. Our findings suggest that sensory processing issues may play a part in the complex context of childhood obesity. Further research is required to confirm these findings.
In this work, a simple and sensitive voltammetric method for simultaneous determination of antihypertensive drugs amlodipine besylate (AML) and ramipril (RMP) is described. A cathodically pretreated ...boron-doped diamond electrode (CP-BDDE) was employed wherein AML and RMP were irreversibly oxidized at 0.68 and 1.70 V (
vs.
Ag/AgCl (3.0 mol L
−1
KCl)), respectively, in Britton-Robinson buffer solution (pH 6.0). Under optimized instrumental parameters of differential pulse voltammetry, the oxidation current of AML and RMP linearly increased in the concentration range of of 0.99-14 and 0.29-1.9 μmol L
−1
, obtaining limits of detection of 0.26 and 0.08 μmol L
−1
, respectively. The feasibility of the proposed method was successfully assessed by simultaneous quantification of these drugs in commercially available pharmaceutical formulations and rat blood serum samples. The results obtained further verify the fact that the CP-BDDE coupled with the differential pulse voltammetric technique may constitute an electroanalytical platform for fast simultaneous determination of these analytes in pharmaceutical formulations and biological samples.
In this work, a simple and sensitive voltammetric method using boron-doped diamond electrode for simultaneous determination of antihypertensive drugs amlodipine besylate and ramipril in pharmaceuticals and biological samples is described.
The aim of study was evaluate the effect of using rice protein coating with different plasticizers types on the quality of eggs storaged at 20 °C for 6 weeks. Three hundred eggs were coated with rice ...protein at 8% solution combined with glycerol, propylene glycol or sorbitol. Uncoated eggs showed the highest weight loss (5.31%), while rice protein with glycerol (4.29%) propylene glycol (4.13%) and sorbitol (4.07%) solutions were effective in preventing weight lost. Uncoated eggs had the worst HU (58.40), albumen (9.52) and yolk (7.06) pH, and YI (0.33) after 6 weeks of storage. The eggs coated of rice protein with glycerol, propylene glycol and sorbitol presented results with similar intern quality between them during all the storage period. However, the use of sorbitol as a plasticizer in the coating is more efficient in maintaining control of the increase in albumen pH. Scanning electron microscopy demonstrated a lower surface porosity in coated eggshell, indicating that the use of the coating may provide a protective barrier against the transfer of gases and moisture. In conclusion, the best egg protection results in terms of egg quality are obtained in eggs coated with rice protein and sorbitol.
