In recent decades, numerous studies have examined the innovative capacity of the company, its macroeconomic consequences and the relationship of innovation with certain macro and micro factors. In this sense, some studies have analysed the influence of certain factors on the innovative capacity of enterprises, paying special attention to large business and sometimes neglecting the analysis in the area of smaller companies. Precisely this work tries to improve the knowledge about business innovation in organizational entities of more limited size, which are those that have more weight in most emerging and developed economies. This work aims to study and analyse the evolution of the concept "innovation" in order to redefine and adapt this concept to the intrinsic characteristics of the Spanish microenterprise. This study try to improve the understanding of innovation and its forms in the Spanish context, and lay the conceptual foundation for future research in the field of small businesses.
•We study the cooperation types chosen by family firms.•The paper delves into vertical, horizontal and institutional cooperation.•The choice of each partner has influence over each type of growth ...strategy.•It has found significant differences between family and non-family firms.
This study examines the relationship between existing partnerships and geographical expansion and diversification strategies in family firms in the Spanish manufacturing sector. It specifically analyses whether the family nature of a business and its cooperative relations (vertical cooperation with clients and suppliers, horizontal cooperation with competitors, and institutional cooperation with technology centers and universities) influence its geographical expansion and diversification strategies, and whether there are significant differences between family and non-family firms. This paper includes a review of the literature and an empirical study with a sample of 1848 companies of which 824 are family firms. Significant differences were generally found between family and non-family firms, depending on the type of partner selected for cooperation and the relationship between the types of cooperation and the growth strategies developed by them. Research results and policy implications are discussed, and management practices are proposed.

Spain, as other countries like Greece, Portugal and Italy, is today one of the European countries with less economic growth forecasts and more unemployment of the European Union. Its companies, ...unlike the Nordic and Central European countries, are characterized by the prominence of small size companies with an average of 1-3 employees. These companies are currently characterized by the continued closure of their business and job losses. For this reason, this work aims to study how the economic crisis has affected micro-enterprises and what factors were decisive in their management. In particular we have studied the Spanish case, extrapolated to other Mediterranean countries, analyzing the variables: training, experience, age firm and innovation through an empirical study. PUBLICATION ABSTRACT
This study examines the relationship between cooperative business relations in small businesses (fewer than 50 employees) and environmental protection, one of the most important policies of social ...responsibility in manufacturing. We reviewed the literature and carried out an empirical study of 930 small manufacturing firms in Spain. Results indicate that small businesses that maintain and improve their cooperative relations through business networking with universities, competitors, suppliers and customers spend more on environmental protection. The managerial, practical, research and policy implications of the obtained research findings are discussed.
This research aims to study two determinant factors of the ICT adoption and use in the Spanish micro-enterprise’s framework. Furthermore, this article analyses the combined influence of the age and ...the training experience of the entrepreneur according to the use of ICT in the company. Previous research has considered that the age of the entrepreneur has a negative effect while the level of education of the entrepreneur always have a positive effect in the use of ICT. However, any previous research has found the analysis of the combined effects of both variables together: the age and training, since the combined effects may be different from the effects of each variable separately. On this basis it has analysed a sample of 148 Spanish firms with fewer than 10 employees. The survey results seem to conclude that the specific training of entrepreneurs on issues related to ICT, (rather than the overall level of their training), moderates the negative effect caused by the increasing age the employer in the use of ICT.
// ABSTRACT IN ENGLISH: Spain, as other countries like Greece, Portugal and Italy, is today one of the European countries with less economic growth forecasts and the most unemployment of the European Union.
