The paper is a script of a lecture given at the ISAPP-Baikal summer school in 2018. The lecture gives an overview of the Tunka Advanced Instrument for cosmic rays and Gamma Astronomy (TAIGA) facility ...including historical introduction, description of existing and future setups, and outreach and open data activities.
Primary human glial fibrillary acidic protein-positive (GFAP+) brain cells (enriched population) have successfully been infected with human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) in vitro, when ...cocultivated with HIV-1-producing H9 cells. Direct incubation of brain cells with HIV-1 resulted only in a limited infection. The percentage of HIV+ cells increased from 5% in passage 1 to 40% in passage 8. Simultaneously with the increase of infected cells, the reverse transcriptase activity in the culture medium increased and reached maximal values in passage 8. The infected cells also produced intact viral particles. In the early phase of cultivation the HIV-infected cells displayed a significantly higher proliferation rate than the uninfected controls. At passage number 8 the HIV-infected GFAP+ cells had almost totally lost the ability to grow, while the controls proliferated at a rate almost unimpaired from the beginning of the cultivation. Up to 10 to 15% of the HIV-infected GFAP+ cells contained at passage number 5 more than 3 nuclei. Memantine (1-amino-3,5-dimethyladamantane), a blocker of the N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor channels, was found to display a significant anti-HIV effect (at a concentration of 1 microgram/ml) on enriched cultures of GFAP+ cells in vitro.
18 patients with hepatolenticular degeneration (Wilson's disease, WD) aged 15-38 years were subjected to an overall clinical and neurophysiologic examinations. As a result, the data obtained enable ...to evaluate functional reserves of CNS of the WD patients in correlation with the illness duration and severity of neurologic symptoms. Correlation between an increase of interpeak I-V and the degree of neurological deficit and, also, level of ceruloplasmin was established (r = -0.45; p < 0.05). Correlation between an increase of latency P300 and the degree of manifestation of neurologic symptoms was identified as well (r = 0.63; p < 0.05). Positive dynamics of evoked potentials was followed in 4 WD patients during copper-eliminative drugs treatment.
We report theoretical and experimental results of on-going feasibility studies to detect cosmic neutrinos acoustically in Lake Baikal. In order to examine ambient noise conditions and to develop ...respective pulse detection techniques a prototype device was created. The device is operating at a depth of 150 m at the site of the Baikal Neutrino Telescope and is capable to detect and classify acoustic signals with different shapes, as well as signals from neutrino-induced showers.
Decompression regimens for excursion dives from a depth of 20, 50, 100 or 200 m were developed and tested in a dry altitude chamber. Each dive continued for about 2 weeks, during which test subjects ...performed 10 excursion dives to a lower depth. No cases of decompression sickness were observed during 246 man/excursions whereas two cases of decompression sickness occurred in a field study.
