Observations of magnetars and some of the high magnetic field pulsars have shown that their thermal luminosity is systematically higher than that of classical radio-pulsars, thus confirming the idea ...that magnetic fields are involved in their X-ray emission. Here we present the results of 2D simulations of the fully coupled evolution of temperature and magnetic field in neutron stars, including the state-of-the-art kinetic coefficients and, for the first time, the important effect of the Hall term. After gathering and thoroughly re-analysing in a consistent way all the best available data on isolated, thermally emitting neutron stars, we compare our theoretical models to a data sample of 40 sources. We find that our evolutionary models can explain the phenomenological diversity of magnetars, high-B radio-pulsars, and isolated nearby neutron stars by only varying their initial magnetic field, mass and envelope composition. Nearly all sources appear to follow the expectations of the standard theoretical models. Finally, we discuss the expected outburst rates and the evolutionary links between different classes. Our results constitute a major step towards the grand unification of the isolated neutron star zoo.
Abstract
Central compact objects (CCOs) are X-ray sources lying close to the centre of supernova remnants, with inferred values of the surface magnetic fields significantly lower (≲1011 G) than those ...of standard pulsars. In this paper, we revise the hidden magnetic field scenario, presenting the first 2D simulations of the submergence and re-emergence of the magnetic field in the crust of a neutron star. A post-supernova accretion stage of about 10−4-10−3 M⊙ over a vast region of the surface is required to bury the magnetic field into the inner crust. When accretion stops, the field re-emerges on a typical time-scale of 1-100 kyr, depending on the submergence conditions. After this stage, the surface magnetic field is restored close to its birth values. A possible observable consequence of the hidden magnetic field is the anisotropy of the surface temperature distribution, in agreement with observations of several of these sources. We conclude that the hidden magnetic field model is viable as an alternative to the antimagnetar scenario, and it could provide the missing link between CCOs and the other classes of isolated neutron stars.

Abstract
We study the long-term quasi-steady evolution of the force-free magnetosphere of a magnetar coupled to its internal magnetic field. We find that magnetospheric currents can be maintained on ...long time-scales of the order of thousands of years. Meanwhile, the energy, helicity and twist stored in the magnetosphere all gradually increase over the course of this evolution, until a critical point is reached, beyond which a force-free magnetosphere cannot be constructed. At this point, some large-scale magnetospheric rearrangement, possibly resulting in an outburst or a flare, must occur, releasing a large fraction of the stored energy, helicity and twist. After that, the quasi-steady evolution should continue in a similar manner from the new initial conditions. The time-scale for reaching this critical point depends on the overall magnetic field strength and on the relative fraction of the toroidal field. The energy stored in the force-free magnetosphere is found to be up to ∼30 per cent larger than the corresponding vacuum energy. This implies that for a 1014 G field at the pole, the energy budget available for fast magnetospheric events is of the order of a few 1044 erg. The spin-down rate is estimated to increase by up to ∼60 per cent, since the dipole content in the magnetosphere is enhanced by the currents present there. A rough estimate of the braking index n reveals that it is systematically n < 3 for the most part of the evolution, consistent with actual measurements for pulsars and early estimates for several magnetars.
We find general relativistic solutions of equilibrium magnetic field configurations in magnetars, extending previous results of Colaiuda et al. Our method is based on the solution of the relativistic ...Grad–Shafranov equation, to which Maxwell's equations can be reduced. We obtain equilibrium solutions with the toroidal magnetic field component confined into a finite region inside the star, and the poloidal component extending to the exterior. These so-called twisted torus configurations have been found to be the final outcome of dynamical simulations in the framework of Newtonian gravity, and appear to be more stable than other configurations. The solutions include higher-order multipoles, which are coupled to the dominant dipolar field. We use arguments of minimal energy to constrain the ratio of the toroidal to the poloidal field.
We present a detailed analysis of the properties of twisted, force-free magnetospheres of non-rotating neutron stars, which are of interest in the modelling of magnetar properties and evolution. In ...our models the magnetic field smoothly matches to a current-free (vacuum) solution at some large external radius, and they are specifically built to avoid pathological surface currents at any of the interfaces. By exploring a large range of parameters, we find a few remarkable general trends. We find that the total dipolar moment can be increased by up to 40 per cent with respect to a vacuum model with the same surface magnetic field, due to the contribution of magnetospheric currents to the global magnetic field. Thus, estimates of the surface magnetic field based on the large-scale dipolar braking torque are slightly overestimating the surface value by the same amount. Consistently, there is a moderate increase in the total energy of the model with respect to the vacuum solution of up to 25 per cent, which would be the available energy budget in the event of a fast, global magnetospheric reorganization commonly associated with magnetar flares. We have also found the interesting result of the existence of a critical twist (φmax ≲ 1.5 rad), beyond which we cannot find any more numerical solutions. Combining the models considered in this paper with the evolution of the interior of neutron stars will allow us to study the influence of the magnetosphere on the long-term magnetic, thermal, and rotational evolution.
Abstract
We extend our previous study of equilibrium solutions of non-rotating force-free magnetospheres of neutron stars. We show that multiple solutions exist for the same sets of parameters, ...implying that the solutions are degenerate. We are able to obtain configurations with disconnected field lines, however, in nearly all cases these correspond to degenerate higher energy solutions. We carry out a wide parametric search in order to understand the properties of the solutions. We confirm our previous results that the lower energy solutions have up to ∼ 25 per cent more energy than the vacuum case, helicity of the order of ∼5 (in some defined units), maximum twist of ∼1.5 rad and a dipole strength that is up to ∼ 40 per cent larger than the vacuum dipole. Including the degenerate higher energy solutions allows for larger theoretical limits of up to ∼ 80 per cent more energy with respect to the vacuum case, helicity of the order of ∼8 and a dipole strength that can now be up to four times that of the vacuum dipole, while the twist can be significantly larger and even diverge for configurations with disconnected domains. The higher energy solutions are probably unstable, therefore, it is unlikely that such magnetospheres exist under normal conditions in magnetars and high magnetic field pulsars.
We perform population synthesis studies of different types of neutron stars (NSs) (thermally emitting isolated NSs, normal radio pulsars, magnetars) taking into account the magnetic field decay and ...using results from the most recent advances in NS cooling theory. For the first time, we confront our results with observations using simultaneously the log N–log S distribution for nearby isolated NSs, the log N–log L distribution for magnetars, and the distribution of radio pulsars in the diagram. For this purpose, we fix a baseline NS model (all microphysics input), and other relevant parameters to standard values (velocity distribution, mass spectrum, birth rates, etc.), allowing us to vary the initial magnetic field strength. We find that our theoretical model is consistent with all sets of data if the initial magnetic field distribution function follows a lognormal law with 〈log (B0/G)〉∼ 13.25 and . The typical scenario includes about 10 per cent of NSs born as magnetars, significant magnetic field decay during the first million years of a NS life (only about a factor of 2 for low-field NSs but more than an order of magnitude for magnetars), and a mass distribution function dominated by low-mass objects. This model explains satisfactorily all known populations. Evolutionary links between different subclasses may exist, although robust conclusions are not yet possible.
ABSTRACT A large fraction of Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) displays an X-ray plateau phase within <105 s from the prompt emission, proposed to be powered by the spin-down energy of a rapidly spinning newly ...born magnetar. In this work we use the properties of the Galactic neutron star population to constrain the GRB-magnetar scenario. We re-analyze the X-ray plateaus of all Swift GRBs with known redshift, between 2005 January and 2014 August. From the derived initial magnetic field distribution for the possible magnetars left behind by the GRBs, we study the evolution and properties of a simulated GRB-magnetar population using numerical simulations of magnetic field evolution, coupled with Monte Carlo simulations of Pulsar Population Synthesis in our Galaxy. We find that if the GRB X-ray plateaus are powered by the rotational energy of a newly formed magnetar, the current observational properties of the Galactic magnetar population are not compatible with being formed within the GRB scenario (regardless of the GRB type or rate at z = 0). Direct consequences would be that we should allow the existence of magnetars and "super-magnetars" having different progenitors, and that Type Ib/c SNe related to Long GRBs form systematically neutron stars with higher initial magnetic fields. We put an upper limit of ≤16 "super-magnetars" formed by a GRB in our Galaxy in the past Myr (at 99% c.l.). This limit is somewhat smaller than what is roughly expected from Long GRB rates, although the very large uncertainties do not allow us to draw strong conclusion in this respect.
