Antibiotics are an essential tool of modern medicine, contributing to significantly decreasing mortality and morbidity rates from infectious diseases. However, persistent misuse of these drugs has ...accelerated the evolution of antibiotic resistance, negatively impacting clinical practice. The environment contributes to both the evolution and transmission of resistance. From all anthropically polluted aquatic environments, wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are probably the main reservoirs of resistant pathogens. They should be regarded as critical control points for preventing or reducing the release of antibiotics, antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB), and antibiotic-resistance genes (ARGs) into the natural environment. This review focuses on the fate of the pathogens

(ESCAPE) in WWTPs. All ESCAPE pathogen species, including high-risk clones and resistance determinants to last-resort antibiotics such as carbapenems, colistin, and multi-drug resistance platforms, were detected in wastewater. The whole genome sequencing studies demonstrate the clonal relationships and dissemination of Gram-negative ESCAPE species into the wastewater via hospital effluents and the enrichment of virulence and resistance determinants of
and enterococci in WWTPs. Therefore, the efficiency of different wastewater treatment processes regarding the removal of clinically relevant ARB species and ARGs, as well as the influence of water quality factors on their performance, should be explored and monitored, along with the development of more effective treatments and appropriate indicators (ESCAPE bacteria and/or ARGs). This knowledge will allow the development of quality standards for point sources and effluents to consolidate the WWTP barrier role against the environmental and public health AR threats.
Metallurgy is a domain of the secondary sector, which represented for years in Romania, as in other former Communist countries, a very important activity for gross domestic product and employment. ...Today, many enterprises which were representative in Romania for the metallurgical industry long ago are targets of the sellers of scrap metal, the scrap metal trade representing a segment that has gained momentum in recent years. Croatia, as a member country of the EU has a special contribution in the trade with metallurgical products and we have proposed in this paper to identify which is the level of international trade with metallurgical products of Romania and Croatia, which included a comparison between these countries. For this aim we’ll use the data provided by Eurostat and World Trade Organization (WTO).

Thus, we assessed whether all-cause in-hospital mortality differs for severe COVID-19-related and classical severe ARDS and which inflammatory biomarkers can predict mortality among these patients. This single-center, retrospective, observational cohort study included pulmonary septic shock patients (n = 114) with COVID-19-related and classical severe ARDS admitted in the Intensive Care Unit.Material and MethodsThis single-center, retrospective, observational cohort study included pulmonary septic shock patients (n = 114) with COVID-19-related and classical severe ARDS admitted in the Intensive Care Unit.Patients with a mean age of 73 (IQR 62-82), predominantly male (63%), were divided into two groups based on outcomes: survivors (n = 50) and non-survivors (n = 64). COVID-19-related severe ARDS (n = 48) accounts for 75% of deaths. Present comorbidities like heart disease (p = 0.043), neurologic disorders (p = 0.018), and liver disease (p = 0.038) were associated with in-hospital mortality, as well. Regarding inflammatory biomarkers, the AUC/c-statistic was 0.656 (95% CI: 0.53-0.759) for leukocytes, 0.613 (95% CI: 0.509-0.717) C-reactive protein (CRP) and 0.651 (95% CI: 0.548-0.753) for procalcitonin in predicting all-cause in-hospital mortality among patients with pulmonary septic shock and severe ARDS.ResultsPatients with a mean age of 73 (IQR 62-82), predominantly male (63%), were divided into two groups based on outcomes: survivors (n = 50) and non-survivors (n = 64). The high value of leukocytes, C-reactive protein, and procalcitonin were predictive for all-cause in-hospital mortality in patients with pulmonary septic shock and ARDS. Infection with COVID-19 was an independent predictor of in-hospital mortality in the presence of ARDS.ConclusionPatients with pulmonary septic shock and with COVID-19-related severe ARDS had a higher incidence of in-hospital mortality than those with classical severe ARDS. We present evidence for a complex, multigenerational bed form pattern and a new type of wind streak (the ripple streak) in the landing site ellipse of the 2016 ExoMars Entry descent and landing ...Demonstrator Module (EDM) in Meridiani Planum (Mars). We identified three main groups of bright‐toned bed forms. Population 3, represented by NE‐SW trending bed forms located inside craters, was emplaced by winds coming from the NW or the SE. Population 2, emplaced by strong easterlies, formed by intracrater transverse aeolian ridges (TARs) and N‐S trending megaripples (plains ripples). Population 1 consists of a relict bed form pattern emplaced by winds coming from the north or south. Alternatively, population 1 can represent a sand ribbon pattern that formed together with the plain ripples. We also report the presence of a new type of wind streak, the ripple streak, which is formed by the population 2 bed forms clustered in the wake zone of impact craters. Based on the results of this work, we now know the EDM module is set to land in a complex aeolian environment. Data from the Dust Characterization, Risk Assessment, and Environment Analyser on the Martian Surface onboard the EDM can help to better decipher the wind regime in Meridiani Planum.

In the era of precision measurements of the neutrino oscillation parameters, upcoming neutrino experiments will also be sensitive to physics beyond the Standard Model. KM3NeT/ORCA is a ...neutrino detector optimised for measuring atmospheric neutrinos from a few GeV to around 100 GeV. In this paper, the sensitivity of the KM3NeT/ORCA detector to neutrino decay has been explored. A three-flavour neutrino oscillation scenario, where the third neutrino mass state

decays into an invisible state, e.g. a sterile neutrino, is considered. We find that KM3NeT/ORCA would be sensitive to invisible neutrino decays with 1

The measurement of the flux of muons produced in cosmic ray air showers is essential for the study of primary cosmic rays. Such measurements are important in extensive air shower detectors to assess ...the energy spectrum and the chemical composition of the cosmic ray flux, complementary to the information provided by fluorescence detectors. Detailed simulations of the cosmic ray air showers are carried out, using codes such as CORSIKA, to estimate the muon flux at sea level. These simulations are based on the choice of hadronic interaction models, for which improvements have been implemented in the post-LHC era. In this work, a deficit in simulations that use state-of-the-art QCD models with respect to the measurement deep underwater with the KM3NeT neutrino detectors is reported. The KM3NeT/ARCA and KM3NeT/ORCA neutrino telescopes are sensitive to TeV muons originating mostly from primary cosmic rays with energies around 10 TeV. The predictions of state-of-the-art QCD models show that the deficit with respect to the data is constant in zenith angle; no dependency on the water overburden is observed. The observed deficit at a depth of several kilometres is compatible with the deficit seen in the comparison of the simulations and measurements at sea level.

Bromine-containing methacrylate, 2-(2-bromopropionyloxy) ethyl methacrylate (BPEM), had been used in the formulation of acrylic radiopaque cements. The effect of this monomer incorporated into the ...liquid phase of acrylic bone cement, on the curing parameters, thermal properties, water absorption, density, compression tests and radiopacity was studied. A decrease of maximum temperature and an increase of the setting time were observed with the addition of the bromine-containing monomer in the radiolucent cement composition. Adding BPEM in radiolucent acrylic bone cements composition results in the decrease of glass transition temperature and increase of its thermal stability. Acrylic bone cements modified with bromine-containing comonomer are characterized by polymerization shrinkage lower than the radiolucent cement. Addition of bromine-containing comonomer in radiolucent acrylic bone cement composition determines the increase of compressive strength. Acrylic bone cements modified with bromine-containing comonomer proved to be radiopaque.
The multifactorial etiology of depression obliges needs an individual assessment, the psychopharmacological approach involving a biopsychosocial analysis for each individual case. The rebalancing of ...the depressive patient, seen as a return to a normal level of psychosocial functioning and reduced risk of relapse is achieved with a prompt and constant support of specialized teams. Treatment should include psychopharmacological and psychosocial approaches, the results being interrelated and contributing to the prognosis of the disorder. Progress in clinical and pharmacological research, vivid dynamics of socio-economic environment, the complexity of diagnostic evaluation and the need for an interdisciplinary approach may cause difficulties in addressing the depressive patient and the ethical controversies. The aim of this paper is to present a brief analysis of challenges encountered in the present psychiatric practice, starting from the heterogeneity of depressive manifestations and finishing with the prioritization of interventional forms.
