The main purpose of this study is to provide the needed additional quantitative evidence regarding the introduction of environmental technologies, and to increase the possibility for generalization ...and thus policy application of conclusions. To achieve that purpose, a conceptual model is developed, and then tested on a large database of firms from various industries with the use of structural equation modeling. The results show that policy measures, past environmental investments, the importance of environmental technologies for customers and the firm performance have a positive effect on environmental investments. Furthermore, the results show that policy measures are a second-order three-factor construct.
The main purpose of this study is to provide stronger quantitative evidence in the field of organizational absorptive capacity research by using a more direct measure of absorptive capacity and a ...wide range of variables in a cross-nationally tested structural model. The results show that there exist two kinds of absorptive capacity: demand-pull and science-push. Their most important determinants proved to be internal R&D, training of personnel, innovation co-operation and attitude toward change. Both kinds of absorptive capacity are positively related to product and process innovation output. Therefore, absorptive capacity is to be given more attention in the future research and innovation policy considerations.
Policy makers are increasingly recognizing the catalytic role of academics’ spin-off companies in a national economy, which derives from their innovativeness that result in new value generation, and ...job creation. Although research on academics’ spin-off companies has been increasing, knowledge gaps exist as to the specific determinants and processes that characterize the emergence of academics’ entrepreneurial intentions that lead them to spin off companies. This research aims to fill this gap. Drawing from psychological and entrepreneurship research on intentionality, the authors propose a conceptual model of academics’ entrepreneurial intentions. They empirically test the model using structural equation modeling and a robust data set collected in two European academic settings to guide future research on this important topic.
Corporate entrepreneurship can be considered important for organisational performance. While being recognised as being important for the development of innovations and technologies of small- and ...medium-sized firms and for the innovation/technology strategies of large firms, inter-organisational relationships in terms of networks and alliances have received inadequate research attention in the context of corporate entrepreneurship in general and in corporate technological entrepreneurship in particular. This study developed and tested a model of alliance-driven corporate technological entrepreneurship activities that impact on organisational performance. The model was tested on 226 usable responses from mail survey data from a sample of manufacturing firms from Slovenia. The model indicates the value of engagement in strategic alliances for the development of corporate technological entrepreneurship activities and consequential performance improvements.
This paper investigates how entrepreneur's characteristics determine debt financing of small manufacturing firms. In particular, we investigate the influence of entrepreneurial self-efficacy, strong ...and weak social ties, gender, age, and entrepreneur's educational level on small firm debt financing. Research results show that small firm debt financing is determined by weak and strong social ties, entrepreneurial self-efficacy, and entrepreneur's educational.
This paper explores the phenomenon of collective learning in the context of clusters, and investigates how collective learning contributes to the innovation performance of cluster firms. Collective ...learning is an interactive process of accumulating knowledge from different local resources. The process is made possible through several channels. Analysing data collected from 290 cluster firms, we identified three collective learning channels: interaction with local firms, interaction with local institutions, and interaction with the local labour market. Additionally, we tested how these channels contribute to innovation performance of cluster firms. The results reveal that local labour is positively related to innovation performance, while indicating that interaction with local firms is negatively related to innovation performance. The conclusions discuss the policy implications of these findings.

This paper presents the results of a research project financed by the Chamber of commerce and industry of Slovenia. The main purpose of the project was to propose a model for useful suggestions ...management, including concrete suggestions for businesses. This is based on (a) an in-depth literature review, (b) case studies of three innovative, export orientated Slovenian companies and (c) the results of the implementation of this model in two Slovenian companies (as a pilot project). Concrete suggestions for businesses regarding the useful suggestions management process, the implementation itself, the rewarding and monitoring of useful suggestions activity and potential adaptations of the model to changes within the company are presented. Since the paper focuses on the implementation of useful suggestions management, offering a rich insight into the concrete processes involved in both developing such policies and carrying them out, companies may achieve great business value by implementing this proposed model.
The innovativeness of an organization has an important impact on its profitability as well as on the competitiveness of a country's economy as a whole. Since the innovativeness of Slovenian ...organizations is low, it is important that managers and industrial policy makers know which factors influence an organizations' innovation. One of these factors is supposed to be the organizational absorptive capacity. Absorptive capacity is one of the most important concepts that have emerged in the field of organizational research in the past years. Absorptive capacity is defined as the set of organizational routines and processes through which an organization identifies and values new external information, and then acquires it, assimilates it and applies it to commercial ends. The results of this research confirm the strong and positive impact of Slovenian organizations' absorptive capacity on process innovation and the even bigger positive influence on the organizations' product innovation.
Investment in R&D encourages innovation, which in turn, spurs economic growth. This paper presents a model to test whether that the number of patent applications is dependent on R&D expenditure, ...especially R&D expenditure in the business sector. This paper shows: 1) that a strong positive correlation exists between R&D expenditure and patent applications, 2) that R&D investment creates patent applications with a time-lag, which is different from country to country, 3) that the number of patent applications in developed countries depends more on R&D expenditure in the business sector than on R&D gross domestic expenditure.
