Aims. Measurements of the Sunyaev-Zel’dovich (hereafter SZ) effect distortion of the cosmic microwave background provide methods to derive the gas pressure and temperature of galaxy clusters. Here we ...study the ability of SZ effect observations to derive the electron distribution function (DF) in massive galaxy clusters. Methods. Our calculations of the SZ effect include relativistic corrections considered within the framework of the Wright formalism and use a decomposition technique of electron DFs into Fourier series. Using multi-frequency measurements of the SZ effect, we find the solution of a linear system of equations that is used to derive the Fourier coefficients; we further analyze different frequency samples to decrease uncertainties in Fourier coefficient estimations. Results. We propose a method to derive DFs of electrons using SZ multi-frequency observations of massive galaxy clusters. We found that the best frequency sample to derive an electron DF includes high frequencies ν = 375, 600, 700, 857 GHz. We show that it is possible to distinguish a Juttner DF from a Maxwell-Bolzman DF as well as from a Juttner DF with the second electron population by means of SZ observations for the best frequency sample if the precision of SZ intensity measurements is less than 0.1%. We demonstrate by means of 3D hydrodynamic numerical simulations of a hot merging galaxy cluster that the morphologies of SZ intensity maps are different for frequencies ν = 375, 600, 700, 857 GHz. We stress that measurements of SZ intensities at these frequencies are a promising tool for studying electron distribution functions in galaxy clusters.
Magnetic properties of inhomogeneous nanoisland FeNi films were studied by SQUID magnetometry. The FeNi films with nominal thickness ranging from 0.6 to 2.0 nm were deposited by rf sputtering on ...Sitall glass substrates and covered by a protecting Al2O3 layer on the top. The SQUID data indicate pronounced irreversibility behavior for the out-of-plane temperature-dependent magnetization response (measured at H ≃ 100 Oe) using zero-field cooling (ZFC) and field-cooled warming (FCW) after the applied dc magnetizing field H m ≃ 2 T for the FeNi samples with nominal thickness 1.1 nm ≲ d ≲ 1.8 nm, below the percolation threshold. The positive difference between the FCW and ZFC data identifies two irreversibility temperature scales, T B ≈ 50 K and T ⁎ ≈ 200 K, which can be associated with the superparamagnetic and superferromagnetic behavior in inhomogeneous nanoisland FeNi films, respectively. However, above the film percolation threshold, we observed a crossover from the out-of-plane to in-plane magnetization orientation. Here, the in-plane FCW-ZFC difference implies negative remanent magnetization response in the temperature range T B ≲ T ≲ T ⁎ . The observed magnetization properties can be associated with the presence of the superferromagnetic phase in self-assembled clusters of quasi-2D metallic magnetic FeNi nanoislands.

Oncorhynchus masou
, in the northern part of the species range (via the masu populations in Sakhalin Oblast), based on data of ...its population structure. It is shown that masu populations that inhabit different rivers genetically differ from each other in allele frequencies at microsatellite markers. In the Naiba River basin, at least two genetically distinct masu populations exist: in the upper reaches and in a tributary, the Bolshoy Takoy River. The masu populations on Iturup Island significantly differ from those on Sakhalin Island; within Sakhalin, the masu salmon from the Chernaya River in the southwestern part of the island is genetically distinct from the southeastern Sakhalin and Aniva Bay populations. The genetic diversity of Iturup populations is substantially lower than that on Sakhalin, probably due to their small sizes. The measures for the conservation and recovery of masu salmon populations should be based primarily on their own genetic resources, or, in the case of a lack of spawners, on the base populations of their ecological/geographical region. In the latter case, masu populations of large rivers can be considered as base ones: for southeastern Sakhalin, this is masu salmon of the Naiba River; for Aniva Bay, this is masu salmon of the Lyutoga River. Transplantation of fish, fertilized eggs, or any other genetic material from a population that is different genetically and inhabits the waters with different ecological gradients should be strongly restricted. The formosan masu salmon from Taiwan Island is studied as an example of a strict genetic isolate.

O-antigens of Gram-negative bacteria modulate the interactions of bacterial cells with diverse external factors, including the components of the immune system and bacteriophages. Some phages need to ...acquire specific adhesins to overcome the O-antigen layer. For other phages, O-antigen is required for phage infection. In this case, interaction of phage receptor binding proteins coupled with enzymatic degradation or modification of the O-antigen is followed by phage infection. Identification of the strategies used by newly isolated phages may be of importance in their consideration for various applications. Here we describe an approach based on screening for host LPS alterations caused by selection by bacteriophages. We describe an optimized LPS profiling procedure that is simple, rapid and suitable for mass screening of mutants. We demonstrate that the phage infection strategies identified using a set of engineered E. coli 4 s mutants with impaired or altered LPS synthesis are in good agreement with the results of simpler tests based on LPS profiling of phage-resistant spontaneous mutants.
We present new observations of Fornax A taken at ∼1 GHz with the MeerKAT telescope and at ∼6 GHz with the Sardinia Radio Telescope (SRT). The sensitive (noise ∼16
μ
Jy beam
−1
), high-resolution ...(≲10″) MeerKAT images show that the lobes of Fornax A have a double-shell morphology, where dense filaments are embedded in a diffuse and extended cocoon. We study the spectral properties of these components by combining the MeerKAT and SRT observations with archival data between 84 MHz and 217 GHz. For the first time, we show that multiple episodes of nuclear activity must have formed the extended radio lobes. The modelling of the radio spectrum suggests that the last episode of injection of relativistic particles into the lobes started ∼24 Myr ago and stopped 12 Myr ago. More recently (∼3 Myr ago), a less powerful and short (≲1 Myr) phase of nuclear activity generated the central jets. Currently, the core may be in a new active phase. It appears that Fornax A is rapidly flickering. The dense environment around Fornax A has lead to a complex recent merger history for this galaxy, including mergers spanning a range of gas contents and mass ratios, as shown by the analysis of the galaxy’s stellar- and cold-gas phases. This complex recent history may be the cause of the rapid, recurrent nuclear activity of Fornax A.
The T5-like siphoviruses DT57C and DT571/2, isolated from horse feces, are very closely related to each other, and most of their structural proteins are also nearly identical to T5 phage. Their LTFs ...(L-shaped tail fibers), however, are composed of two proteins, LtfA and LtfB, instead of the single Ltf of bacteriophage T5. In silico and mutant analysis suggests a possible branched structure of DT57C and DT571/2 LTFs, where the LtfB protein is connected to the phage tail via the LtfA protein and with both proteins carrying receptor recognition domains. Such adhesin arrangement has not been previously recognized in siphoviruses. The LtfA proteins of our phages are found to recognize different host O-antigen types: E. coli O22-like for DT57C phage and E. coli O87 for DT571/2. LtfB proteins are identical in both phages and recognize another host receptor, most probably lipopolysaccharide (LPS) of E. coli O81 type. In these two bacteriophages, LTF function is essential to penetrate the shield of the host's O-antigens. We also demonstrate that LTF-mediated adsorption becomes superfluous when the non-specific cell protection by O-antigen is missing, allowing the phages to bind directly to their common secondary receptor, the outer membrane protein BtuB. The LTF independent adsorption was also demonstrated on an O22-like host mutant missing O-antigen O-acetylation, thus showing the biological value of this O-antigen modification for cell protection against phages.
