Titanium dioxide is a commonly used ingredient in cosmetics acting as a thickening agent and inorganic UV filter. However, TiO2 is difficult to disperse, which causes problems in spreading the ...formulations. The solution to this problem is to modify the titanium dioxide surface to change its properties by creation of the new type of hybrid inorganic–organic UV filter. Therefore, this study aimed to functionalize titanium dioxide with organosilicon compounds and determine how this modification will affect the dispersibility of TiO2 in the colloidal system and the stability of emulsions. First, the functionalized octaspherosilicates were obtained and characterized. Next, the synthesized compounds were applied as modifiers for titanium dioxide and were analyzed by FT-IR, UV-Vis, and laser diffraction. Furthermore, the hydrophilic–hydrophobic character was assessed by measuring the contact angle. The new materials were introduced into emulsions and the formulations were analyzed in terms of particle size distribution and stability by multiple light scattering. It was found that the modification of titanium dioxide with spherosilicates significantly improved both the stability of emulsion and the dispersibility of novel materials in the colloidal system compared to nonmodified TiO2. The covalent binding of the modifier with the titanium dioxide had an impact on the stability of the emulsion.
In this study, the influence of TiO2 pigment filler modified with spherosilicate derivatives on the processes and thermomechanical properties of composites based on PLA was investigated. Rheological ...tests (MFR) were carried out, on the basis of which it was found that the addition of organosilicon compounds has a plasticizing effect on the polymer-filler systems. TGA and DSC analysis were performed. The analysis of the contact angle showed that 1.5% of the additives had an influence on the superhydrophobic properties of TiO2 (above 135°), and a slight improvement of this parameter was also observed for composites containing the modified pigment. Microscopic analysis and mechanical tests (tensile strength, impact strength and flexural strength tests) were carried out as well. It has been observed that the addition of certain derivatives adversely affects the dispersion of the filler, thus a slight improvement in mechanical properties is observed. For modifiers that do not affect filler agglomeration, a plasticizing effect on the composite is observed.
In this paper, a new type of borasilsesquioxanes was synthesized through a condensation process, and its reactivity in catalytic hydrosilylation reactions with silanes, siloxanes, and silsesquioxanes ...was investigated. The obtained compounds were mostly obtained in >90% yield. They were fully characterized using spectroscopic (1H, 13C, 29Si NMR) and spectrometric (MALDI-TOF-MS) methods. The next stage of the research involved studying the thermogravimetric properties of the borasilsesquioxanes. By analyzing the different stages of decomposition using spectroscopic techniques (NMR, ATR-FTIR, Raman) and microscopic imaging, it was found that the structure of the borasilsesquioxanes changed during the pyrolysis process and polymer compounds were formed.
The combination of two dissimilar materials has always been a serious problem in dentistry. In order to meet this challenge, it is necessary to combine both chemical methods (treatment with silanes, ...(meth)acrylic functional monomers) and the development of the surface of the joined material in a physical way, e.g., by sandblasting with alumina, alumina with silica, acid etching, the use of lasers and other means. The purpose of this literature review is to present all methods of joining dental composites with other materials such as ceramics, metal, another composite material. This review covers articles published within the period 2012–2022 in journals indexed in the PubMed database, written in English and describing joining different dental materials to each other. All the critical steps of new joint preparation have been addressed, including proper cleaning of the joint surface, the application of appropriate primers capable of forming a chemical bond between ceramics, zirconium oxide or metals and alloys, and finally, the application of new composite materials.
Abstract
In this work, the possibility of managing the rheological and mechanical parameters of composites based on PLA with the use of cubic structures of organofunctional spherosilicates was ...verified. To accurately observe the effect of various organosilicon modifier substitutions on changes in composites’ properties, we synthesized and used monofunctional octasubstituted derivatives as reference systems. The OSS/PLA systems were tested with concentrations of 0.1–2.5% (w/w) using extrusion to obtain a filament with a diameter of 1.75 mm. The printed samples underwent comprehensive tests including microscopic (SEM–EDS, optical microscope), rheological, thermal (TG, DSC, HDT), mechanical (impact and strength) as well as water contact angle tests. The work is interdisciplinary in nature and combines elements of organosilicon synthesis, materials engineering, and materials processing and characterization technology.
The rising demand for innovative and sophisticated personal care products is a driving factor for manufacturers to obtain new formulations that will fulfill the customers' preferences. In recent ...years, silsesquioxanes have attracted the attention of the cosmetics industry. These compounds have been proposed to be used in novel cosmetic formulations as emollient, dispersant, and viscosity modifiers. Therefore, this publication aims to review the main important aspects of polyhedral oligosilsesquioxanes as ingredients of personal care formulations, taking into consideration different types of products. The methods of obtaining these compounds were also presented. Additionally, the detailed analysis of patents dedicated to the application of silsesquioxanes in cosmetic formulations was also performed.
With the development of 3D printing technology, there is a need to produce printable materials with improved properties, e.g., sliding properties. In this paper, the authors present the possibilities ...of producing composites based on biodegradable PLA with the addition of graphite. The team created composites with the following graphite weight contents: 1%, 2.5%, 5%, 7.5%, and 10%. Neat material was also subjected to testing. Tribological, mechanical, and chemical properties of the mentioned materials were examined. Measurements were also made after keeping the samples in ageing and climatic ovens. Furthermore, SEM observations of samples before and after friction tests were carried out. It was demonstrated that increasing graphite content caused a significant decrease in wear (PLA + 10% graphite had a wear rate three times lower than for a neat material). The addition of graphite did not adversely affect most of the other properties, but it ought to be noted that mechanical properties changed significantly. After conditioning in a climatic oven PLA + 10% graphite has (in comparison with neat material) 11% lower fracture stress, 47% lower impact strength, and 21% higher Young’s modulus. It can be certainly stated that the addition of graphite to PLA is a step towards obtaining a material that is low-cost and suitable for printing sliding spare parts.
This article presents the development of an automated three-point bending testing system using a robot to increase the efficiency and precision of measurements for PLA/TPU polymer blends as ...implementation high-throughput measurement methods. The system operates continuously and characterizes the flexural properties of PLA/TPU blends with varying TPU concentrations. This study aimed to determine the effect of TPU concentration on the strength and flexural stiffness, surface properties (WCA), thermal properties (TGA, DSC), and microscopic characterization of the studied blends.
In this study, injection moulding was applied to produce biocomposites consisting of polylactide (PLA) and amorphous diatomaceous earth used as a filler at different concentrations. Natural wax and ...synthetic wax were added to improve processing properties, comparing the resulting biocomposites. The use of natural beeswax makes the composite environmentally friendly. The prepared composites contained 2.5, 5, 10 and 15% w/w filler. The test samples have been injection moulded. Rheological, mechanical, surface and other properties were assessed for the fabricated composites. The testing has shown that the use of wax additives has a significant influence on the mechanical properties (tensile strength, flexural strength, impact strength) and the hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity of composite surfaces. The addition of natural wax, especially at lower concentration, has a positive effect on the rheological properties of composites (melt flow rate, MFR), flexural modulus and impact strength. Different composite parameters are modified by different wax types so both natural and synthetic waxes, can be used interchangeably, depending on the required final material characteristics.

•Co-doped magnesium fluoride as a support for platinum catalysts.•Relationship between Lewis acidity and hydrogenation activity.•Hydrogenation of nitroarenes over Pt catalysts in ...batch, flow and APR conditions.•100% selectivity in ortho-chloronitrobenzene hydrogenation in APR conditions.
The binary Mg-Co fluorides have been employed for the first time as platinum catalyst supports and tested for o-chloronitrobenzene hydrogenation in batch, flow and aqueous-phase reforming conditions. Isomorphous substitution of Co2+ cations for Mg2+ ones in the tetragonal structure of MgF2 was verified by XRD analysis. The DFT calculations showed a decrease in the strength of surface Lewis acid centers with increasing cobalt content in the binary fluorides and were confirmed by NH3-TPD and Py-FTIR studies. The activity of Pt/MgCoF catalysts for o-chloronitrobenzene hydrogenation correlates with Lewis acidity and the amount of chemisorbed nitrobenzene. The latter forms on the catalyst surface adsorbed species not described in the literature yet. The mode of chloronitrobenzene adsorption on platinum-support boundary centers via electron-deficient Mg2+ and electron-rich platinum centers has been proposed. It has been found that the application of in-situ generated hydrogen from APR of methanol makes it possible to obtain o-chloroaniline with 100% selectivity.
