Although galaxies are found to follow a tight relation between their star formation rate and stellar mass, they are expected to exhibit complex star formation histories (SFH) with short-term ...fluctuations. The goal of this pilot study is to present a method that identifies galaxies that undergo strong variation in star formation activity in the last ten to some hundred million years. In other words, the proposed method determines whether a variation in the last few hundred million years of the SFH is needed to properly model the spectral energy distribution (SED) rather than a smooth normal SFH. > 8.5 using high signal-to-noise ratio broadband photometry. We applied approximate Bayesian computation, a custom statistical method for performing model choice, which is associated with machine-learning algorithms to provide the probability that a flexible SFH is preferred based on the observed flux density ratios of galaxies. We present the method and test it on a sample of simulated SEDs. The input information fed to the algorithm is a set of broadband UV to NIR (rest-frame) flux ratios for each galaxy. The choice of using colors is made to remove any difficulty linked to normalization when classification algorithms are used. The method has an error rate of 21% in recovering the correct SFH and is sensitive to SFR variations larger than 1 dex. A more traditional SED-fitting method using CIGALE is tested to achieve the same goal, based on fit comparisons through the Bayesian information criterion, but the best error rate we obtained is higher, 28%. Sequential importance sampling algorithms have been defined to estimate likelihoods in models of ancestral population processes. However, these algorithms are based on features of the models with ...constant population size, and become inefficient when the population size varies in time, making likelihood-based inferences difficult in many demographic situations. In this work, we modify a previous sequential importance sampling algorithm to improve the efficiency of the likelihood estimation. Our procedure is still based on features of the model with constant size, but uses a resampling technique with a new resampling probability distribution depending on the pairwise composite likelihood. We tested our algorithm, called sequential importance sampling with resampling (SISR) on simulated data sets under different demographic cases. In most cases, we divided the computational cost by two for the same accuracy of inference, in some cases even by one hundred. This study provides the first assessment of the impact of such resampling techniques on parameter inference using sequential importance sampling, and extends the range of situations where likelihood inferences can be easily performed.
The purpose of this article is to compare Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and a much less used method, i.e. MCA (Multiple Correspondence Analysis) with data being first changed into membership ...values to fuzzy space windows. For such a comparison, data from an experimental study about turning the steering wheel is used. In a didactic perspective, this article only considers one multidimensional signal with 5 components: 3 linked to the steering wheel angle and hand positions and 2 to hand effort variables. A discussion weighs out the pros and the cons of both methods with criteria such as the possibility to show complex relational phenomena, the analysis/computing time or the information loss inherent to the averaging stage (in the perspective to analyze several hundreds of large multidimensional signals).
La chute est un problème majeur de santé publique. Les recherches visant à prévenir les risques liés aux chutes chez les personnes âgées sont cruciales pour assurer le maintien de leur autonomie, de ...leur participation à la société et de leur qualité de vie. Créé en 2017 en réponse à l’appel à projets du Groupement Interrégional de Recherche Clinique - GIRCI Nord-Ouest, le réseau d’investigation clinique PREMOB a pour vocation d’accroître l’activité de recherche clinique sur la thématique : « Prévenir la perte de mobilité et les chutes chez les personnes âgées ». Le réseau est composé des services gériatriques et non-gériatriques des quatre CHUs (Lille, Amiens, Caen et Rouen), des CHs (Valenciennes, Saint-Quentin, Beauvais), du GHICL, ainsi que des unités/laboratoires de recherche de l’interrégion (unité COMETE - Inserm, université de Caen ; LAMIH - Université Polytechnique des Hauts-de-France ; EVALAB - Living-lab, INSERM CIC-IT 1403 ; ScaLab UMR-CNRS, Lille).
Dédiées à la recherche, les principales missions du réseau PREMOB sont :
– développer l’activité de recherche clinique sur la thématique de la prévention de la perte de mobilité et des chutes à travers des projets de recherche collaboratifs ;
– développer les travaux interdisciplinaires à travers des échanges renforcés, structurés et réguliers entre les différents acteurs du réseau en particulier entre cliniciens et chercheurs ;
– accroître la capacité de ces acteurs à mettre en place et mener des essais cliniques, (accompagnement, mise à disposition d’outils, aide au recrutement des témoins et des volontaires sains…) ;
– accroître la capacité de ces acteurs à coordonner des projets (expertise scientifique, conseil méthodologique, aide au montage des projets, réponses aux appels d’offres, partenariats) ;
– favoriser la mise en place d’études au plus près des patients en développant un maillage territorial ;
– développer et promouvoir des formations théoriques et pratiques des professionnels de santé sur la thématique du réseau et sur la recherche clinique ;
– diffuser des connaissances et promouvoir l’amélioration des pratiques professionnelles en facilitant l’accès aux informations partagées.
Le fonctionnement du réseau est assuré par ses instances : le Comité de Pilotage, ayant pour principale mission de définir la politique générale du réseau ainsi que de garantir et d’appliquer ses orientations scientifiques. Le Conseil scientifique assure l’expertise scientifique des projets portés par le réseau. La coordination opérationnelle est assurée par le coordonnateur médical et scientifique et l’ARC coordonnateur. Son rôle est de centraliser et de diffuser l’information, d’accompagner/orienter les membres dans la réponse aux différents appels à projets, dans la mise en place, la conduite et la coordination des projets de recherche collaboratifs.
Le réseau a atteint avec succès ses objectifs fixés pour la première année : structuration institutionnelle et opérationnelle avec la définition et l’officialisation de ces instances ; élaboration des protocoles de recherche impliquant plusieurs partenaires : plusieurs projets collaboratifs sont actuellement en cours de conception ; réponse aux appels à projets : 5 lettres d’intention ont été déposées aux différents appels à projets (PHRC-N, PHRC-I, PREPS, émergence) ; maillage territorial : initialement porté par 10 membres fondateurs, le réseau s’est élargi au cours de cette première année avec l’adhésion de 8 nouveaux membres. De nombreuses collaborations avec des structures académiques et privées ont été créées. Le réseau poursuit son développement et doit assurer son avenir par l’accomplissement de ses missions et la recherche de nouvelles sources de financement.
Le réseau PREMOB facilite la mutualisation des compétences des acteurs de l’interrégion Nord-Ouest en apportant plus d’efficacité et de transversalité aux projets collaboratifs sur la prévention de la perte de mobilité et les chutes chez les personnes âgées.
This paper introduces an instrumented steering wheel, built from a steering wheel divided in three sections. It has three dynamometers that measure the force wrench applied on each third. We describe ...the calibration process, which compensates for the effects of weight and inertia, with the introduction of a new parameter that contains the Euler force. A driving simulation platform was built as a demonstration setup: one driver was asked to perform two tests as a proof of concept of the instrumented steering wheel. Our analysis of the force wrench of the individual hands during these tests showed that the driver did not apply a symmetrical effort when steering the wheel. In addition, the driver showed little mechanical efficiency in the task as it appeared that non-negligible energy was expended for non-turning axes. In conclusion, the instrumented steering wheel is ready to be fully used as a measurement device for the quantization of the driving task.

The pattern of hand positioning varies considerably as drivers attempt to steer through sharp turns at low speed. The technique chosen by the driver should be the best compromise between car control and driver safety (i.e. airbag deployment). The purpose of this study was to assess different steering techniques in order to characterize the drivers steering profile, defined by tracking hand position. Authors propose a graphical method and a lateral indicator to define driver steering profiles. Tracking of hand steering position in twenty three volunteers with no upper arm disabilities was undertaken with a motion capture system. The steering exercise occurred in a simulator. Results from the hand tracking of steering indicate three distinct driver profiles of: hand-crossing (52%), non-hand-crossing (30%) and asymmetric-hand-crossing (17%). Most subjects steer with one hand and crossed hands often. This present a safety issue for the airbag deploying.
