This conceptual article will provide an in-depth exploration of the relevant literature focused on college and career readiness interventions in elementary schools. Beginning with a theoretical ...framework, a rationale is provided for early intervention by elementary school counselors. While professional guidelines and standards exist supporting early college and career readiness interventions, research outlining evidencebased practices at the elementary level is scarce. Existing practices used by school counselors are outlined.

Through use of an interpretive phenomenological inquiry, this study examined the lived experiences of first-generation college students persisting at a mid-sized, private, predominantly White ...institution. Themes that emerged across participants included a sense of “otherness” according to students’ race, ethnicity, and first-generation and socioeconomic statuses. Motivations and strengths that enabled students to persist in school, despite facing multiple obstacles, are described. Implications for students and helping professionals are included.
This study explored the experiences of counselor students of color in two multicultural courses in a master-level counseling program. Participants revealed their feelings surrounding a need to assume ...a 'teaching role' with their White counterparts, to challenge racist and stereotypical viewpoints. Positive and negative experiences associated with this role were expressed. Findings are drawn upon to suggest more inclusive counselor education tactics.
Through the use of interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA), this study examined the impacts of counseling first-generation, low-income college-bound students by way of a school counselor ...experiential learning program at one small, private university in the eastern United States. This study explored experiential learning, including from a transformative learning perspective, as well as its overall impact on school counseling student preparation. Themes that emerged indicated that school counseling graduate student interns, when placed in a culturally diverse experiential learning setting, have the potential to increase their counselor competencies including multicultural competencies, and to have a transformative learning experience. These impacts were discussed along with a social justice advocacy perspective. Implications of these findings, including encouragement for the development of similar university-community partnerships, were included.
This qualitative study examined the experiences of 11 students of color who participated in 2 multicultural counseling courses in a master’s‐level counseling program at a predominantly White ...institution. Findings illustrate students’ learning experiences based on instructors’ racial and ethnic identities, including a pivotal transition from distrust to trust toward the White instructor. Implications for teaching race‐based topics with students of color are presented.
Este estudio cualitativo examinó las experiencias de 11 estudiantes de color que participaron en dos cursos de consejería multicultural en un programa de consejería de nivel máster en una institución predominantemente blanca. Los hallazgos ilustran las experiencias de aprendizaje de los alumnos basadas en las identidades raciales y étnicas de los docentes, incluyendo una transición fundamental desde la desconfianza hasta la confianza hacia el docente blanco. Se presentan las implicaciones para la enseñanza de temas basados en la raza con alumnos de color.
This phenomenological study assessed master-level students' experiences of using photovoice, a creative learning activity, in a race-based multicultural counseling course. Students were asked to ...engage in weekly written reflections regarding a course-related photographic image, with the goal of more deeply processing cognitive and affective reactions to the course. Data analyzed included focus groups, student written responses, and photos. Findings indicated use of photovoice as a means for processing cognitions, which allowed students to deepen learning by extending a racialized lens outside of the classroom. Students also indicated use of the tool to process emotional reactions at various stages of the course, allowing learners to creatively and visually express feelings as they surfaced.
This study was an investigation of the predictive value of perceived career barriers and career decision self-efficacy on the certainty of initial career choice among Educational Opportunity Fund ...Program (EOF) pre-freshman college students, an under-studied college population with respect to career development (Winograd & Shick Tryon, 2009). The moderating effects of certain cultural characteristics (race, gender and college generational status) on the certainty of initial career choice were also examined. A nonexperimental correlational research design was utilized, along with a multiple linear regression analysis, to investigate the predictability of perceived career barriers and career decision self-efficacy, directly and as moderated by the cultural characteristics of gender, race and college generational status on the certainty of initial career choice among pre-freshmen EOF students. Spillover of a pathogen from a wildlife reservoir into a human or livestock host requires the pathogen to overcome a hierarchical series of barriers. Interventions aimed at one or more of these ...barriers may be able to prevent the occurrence of spillover. Here, we demonstrate how interventions that target the ecological context in which spillover occurs (i.e. ecological interventions) can complement conventional approaches like vaccination, treatment, disinfection and chemical control. Accelerating spillover owing to environmental change requires effective, affordable, durable and scalable solutions that fully harness the complex processes involved in cross-species pathogen spillover. OBJECTIVE:To use plasma neuron-derived exosomes (NDEs) to detect proteins that diagnose HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND). To compare NDE cargo from HAND with Alzheimerʼs disease.
...DESIGN:Eighty plasma samples were assayed including men (n = 29) and women (n = 51) with and without HAND.
METHODS:Plasma NDEs were isolated by immunoadsorption with neuron specific L1 cell adhesion molecule antibody. NDE proteins were quantified by ELISA and proximity extension assays for 184 targets.
RESULTS:Neuronal enrichment of NDE was confirmed with elevated synaptophysin and normalized to the exosomal marker, apoptosis-linked gene-2-interacting protein X (ALIX). NDE from men and women had significant divergent results. High mobility group box 1 and neurofilament light were significantly increased in NDE from cognitively impaired men and were unchanged in women. NDE from HIV+ men had decreased p-T181-tau, a marker increased in Alzheimerʼs disease, compared with no difference in women. NDE amyloid beta was not increased in cognitive impairment. Proximity extension assays analysis showed 25 proteins were differentially expressed in HIV infection alone. Seven proteins identified asymptomatic and mild cognitive impairment in HIV+ women. NDE from women had significantly decreased cathepsin S, total tau, neuronal cell adhesion molecule and contactin 5 in mild impairment. Twelve proteins were increased in NDE from cognitively impaired men, including carboxypeptidase M, cadherin 3, colony stimulating factor 2 receptor alpha subunit and mesencephalic astrocyte-derived neurotropic factor.
CONCLUSION:NDE proteins differ in HIV infection alone and cognitive impairment between men and women suggesting mechanistic sex differences associated with HAND. Several NDE targets are different from that reported for Alzheimerʼs disease.
Adult skeletal muscle adapts to functional needs, maintaining consistent numbers of myonuclei and stem cells. Although resident muscle stem cells or satellite cells are required for muscle growth and ...repair, in uninjured muscle, these cells appear quiescent and metabolically inactive. To investigate the satellite cell contribution to myofibers in adult uninjured skeletal muscle, we labeled satellite cells by inducing a recombination of LSL-tdTomato in Pax7(CreER) mice and scoring tdTomato+ myofibers as an indicator of satellite cell fusion.
Satellite cell fusion into myofibers plateaus postnatally between 8 and 12 weeks of age, reaching a steady state in hindlimb muscles, but in extra ocular or diaphragm muscles, satellite cell fusion is maintained at postnatal levels irrespective of the age assayed. Upon recombination and following a 2-week chase in 6-month-old mice, tdTomato-labeled satellite cells fused into myofibers as 20, 50, and 80 % of hindlimb, extra ocular, and diaphragm myofibers, respectively, were tdTomato+. Satellite cells contribute to uninjured myofibers either following a cell division or directly without an intervening cell division.
The frequency of satellite cell fusion into the skeletal muscle fibers is greater than previously estimated, suggesting an important functional role for satellite cell fusion into adult myofibers and a requirement for active maintenance of satellite cell numbers in uninjured skeletal muscle.
