Three Odontaspis ferox (confirmed by mtDNA barcoding) were found in the English Channel and Celtic Sea in 2023 at Lepe, UK (50.7846, −1.3508), Kilmore Quay, Ireland (52.1714, −6.5937), and Lyme Bay, ...UK (50.6448, −2.9302). These are the first records of O. ferox in either country, and extend the species' range by over three degrees of latitude, to >52° N. They were ~275 (female), 433 (female), and 293 cm (male) total length, respectively. These continue a series of new records, possibly indicative of a climate change−induced shift in the species' range.

Excess copper is highly toxic and forms part of the host innate immune system's antibacterial arsenal, accumulating at sites of infection and acting within macrophages to kill engulfed ...pathogens. We show for the first time that a novel, horizontally gene transferred copper resistance locus (copXL), uniquely associated with the SCCmec elements of the highly virulent, epidemic, community acquired methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA‐MRSA) USA300, confers copper hyper‐resistance. These genes are additional to existing core genome copper resistance mechanisms, and are not found in typical S. aureus lineages, but are increasingly identified in emerging pathogenic isolates. Our data show that CopX, a putative P1B‐3‐ATPase efflux transporter, and CopL, a novel lipoprotein, confer copper hyper‐resistance compared to typical S. aureus strains. The copXL genes form an operon that is tightly repressed in low copper environments by the copper regulator CsoR. Significantly, CopX and CopL are important for S. aureus USA300 intracellular survival within macrophages. Therefore, the emergence of new S. aureus clones with the copXL locus has significant implications for public health because these genes confer increased resistance to antibacterial copper toxicity, enhancing bacterial fitness by altering S. aureus interaction with innate immunity.
Nebel et al discusses the implementation of a roadmap to conserve aerial insectivores in North America. Aerial insectivores are subject to myriad anthropogenic stressors across their annual cycles ...but there is little evidence that a single factor explains the fluctuations observed among populations and species. The expansion of intensive agricultural and urban land use especially over the last 30 years has introduced a range of threats impacting both habitat quantity and quality. Direct impacts include habitat loss and degradation, particularly of wetlands, grasslands, and forests, and indirect impacts of stressors that reduce the quality of breeding, foraging, and roosting sites. The response by Canadians to the COVID-19 pandemic amply demonstrates that rapid changes are possible when we work together to surmount challenges.
Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) represents an important but limited treatment for patients with severe COVID-19. We assessed the effects of an educational intervention on a person's ECMO ...care preference and examined whether patients and providers had similar ECMO preferences. In the Video+Survey group, patients watched an educational video about ECMO's purpose, benefits, and risks followed by an assessment of ECMO knowledge and care preferences in seven scenarios varying by hypothetical patient age, function, and comorbidities. Patients in the Survey Only group and providers didn't watch the video. Logistic regression was used to estimate the probability of agreement for each ECMO scenario between the two patient groups and then between all patients and providers. Video+Survey patients were more likely (64% vs. 17%; p = 0.02) to correctly answer all ECMO knowledge questions than Survey Only patients. Patients in both groups agreed that ECMO should be considered across all hypothetical scenarios, with predicted agreement above 65%. In adjusted analyses, patients and providers had similar predicted agreement for ECMO consideration across six of the seven scenarios, but patients showed greater preference (84% vs. 41%, p = 0.003) for the scenario of a functionally dependent 65-year-old with comorbidities than providers. An educational video increased a person's ECMO knowledge but did not change their ECMO preferences. Clinicians were less likely than patients to recommend ECMO for older adults, so advanced care planning discussion between patients and providers about treatment options in critically ill patients with COVID-19 is critical.

White-tailed deer and mule deer of North America are the ...only deer species in which SARS-CoV-2 has been documented, raising the question of whether other reservoir species exist. We report cases of SARS-CoV-2 seropositivity in a fallow deer population located in Dublin, Ireland. Sampled deer were seronegative in 2020 when the Alpha variant was circulating in humans, 1 deer was seropositive for the Delta variant in 2021, and 12/21 (57%) sampled deer were seropositive for the Omicron variant in 2022, suggesting host tropism expansion as new variants emerged in humans. Omicron BA.1 was capable of infecting fallow deer lung type-2 pneumocytes and type-1-like pneumocytes or endothelial cells ex vivo. Neurogenic bladder is a common source of morbidity in patients with spina bifida and can cause renal damage. Medical management may include imaging, urodynamic studies (UDS), laboratory testing, ...clean intermittent catheterization (CIC), and medication. There is ongoing debate regarding the optimal management regimen. Approaches are described by two paradigms: proactive and expectant management. In a proactive approach, invasive interventions like CIC and UDS are initiated before the onset of renal abnormalities. In expectant management, UDS, CIC, and medications are started after abnormalities are identified. In this scoping review, we aim to comprehensively review existing literature on outcomes of proactive and expectant management of neurogenic bladder in patients with spina bifida.
We searched multiple databases and screened articles for inclusion using PRISMA-ScR guidelines. Included studies reported clinical outcomes of any aspect of proactive or expectant neurogenic bladder management in patients with spina bifida.
Ultimately, 74 articles were included for review including 67 cohort studies, 4 cross-sectional studies, 2 sequential cohort studies, and 1 randomized control trial. Eleven studies directly compared management strategies. There was substantial heterogeneity in study designs, management protocols, and reported outcomes. Most studies addressed multiple simultaneous aspects of management without specifically analyzing individual aspects. However, some commented on individual aspects of management including UDS (13), CIC (32), imaging (7), and medication (5). Although there was no consensus about optimal management, all direct comparisons of paradigms supported a proactive approach.
Our review identified a broad body of literature about optimal management of neurogenic bladder. Existing studies vary greatly in terms of treatment protocols, measured outcomes, and management recommendations. Overall, studies that directly compare management are scarce but favor proactive management. Given the implications on clinical outcomes, it is crucial to focus future work on directly comparing management strategies and isolating the effects of different individual management elements.
Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) has been an important tool for population surveillance during the COVID-19 pandemic and continues to play a key role in monitoring SARS-CoV-2 infection levels ...following reductions in national clinical testing schemes. Studies measuring decay profiles of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater have underscored the value of WBE, however investigations have been hampered by high biosafety requirements for SARS-CoV-2 infection studies. Therefore, surrogate viruses with lower biosafety standards have been used for SARS-CoV-2 decay studies, such as murine hepatitis virus (MHV), but few studies have directly compared decay rates of both viruses. We compared the persistence of SARS-CoV-2 and MHV in wastewater, using 50 % tissue culture infectious dose (TCID50) and reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) assays to assess infectious virus titre and viral gene markers, respectively. Infectious SARS-CoV-2 and MHV indicate similar endpoints, however observed early decay characteristics differed, with infectious SARS-CoV-2 decaying more rapidly than MHV. We find that MHV is an appropriate infectious virus surrogate for viable SARS-CoV-2, however inconsistencies exist in viral RNA decay parameters, indicating MHV may not be a suitable nucleic acid surrogate across certain temperature regimes. This study highlights the importance of sample preparation and the potential for decay rate overestimation in wastewater surveillance for SARS-CoV-2 and other pathogens.

Preliminary data mostly from animal models suggest the sST2/IL-33 pathway may have causal relevance for vascular disease and diabetes and thus point to a potential novel inflammatory link to ...cardiometabolic disease. However, the characterisation of sST2 levels in terms of metabolic or vascular risk in man is completely lacking. We sought to address this gap via a comprehensive analysis of risk factor and vascular correlates of sST2 in a cross-sectional study (pSoBid). We measured sST2 in plasma in 639 subjects and comprehensively related it to cardiovascular and diabetes risk factors and imaged atherosclerosis measures. Circulating sST2 levels increased with age, were lower in women and in highest earners. After adjusting for age and gender, sST2 levels associated strongly with markers of diabetes, including triglycerides effect estimate (EE) per 1 standard deviation increase in sST2:1.05 95%CI 1.01,1.10), liver function (alanine aminotransaminase ALT and γ-glutamyl transferase GGT: EE 1.05 1.01,1.09 and 1.13 1.07,1.19 respectively), glucose (1.02 1.00,1.03) and sICAM-1 (1.05 1.02,1.07). However, sST2 levels were not related to smoking, cholesterol, blood pressure, or atheroma (carotid intima media thickness, plaque presence). These results suggest that sST2 levels, in individuals largely without vascular disease, are related principally to markers associated with diabetes and ectopic fat and add support for a role of sST2 in diabetes. Further mechanistic studies determining how sST2 is linked to diabetes pathways may offer new insights into the inflammatory paradigm for type 2 diabetes.
