Abstract
Water competition between the food and energy sector is a critical component of the food-energy-water nexus. However, few studies have systematically characterized the geospatial and, ...especially, the sub-annual variations in such competition and the associated environmental impacts and targeted mitigation opportunities. This study characterizes competing water uses for crop-specific irrigated agriculture and fuel-specific power generation across global major river basins to reveal their resulting impacts on local water scarcity for global population under both current and a warming climate. Under annual (and most seasonal) accounting, almost all basins currently suffering from extremely high water scarcity are dominated by agricultural water consumption (e.g. accommodating 26%–49% of basin-total population across seasons), which are often simultaneously exposed to potentially decreasing seasonal water availability under a 4 °C warming scenario. Only 13%–20% of population are located in basins dominated by seasonal power sector water uses, which are predominantly with low water scarcity. Agriculture sector provides the most basin-specific water mitigation opportunities across mid-latitude basins in all four seasons. Nevertheless, power sector becomes more important in affecting seasonal water scarcity and provides unique seasonal water mitigation opportunities, particularly in basins among higher northern latitudes in winter. This analysis highlights irrigated agriculture is currently and will likely remain the key in global water management for basins facing the severest water scarcity, yet increasing attention on the seasonal and spatial variations in cross-sector water use competition is needed to better identify region- and season- specific mitigation opportunities.
Recently, it was reported that anesthetizing infant rats for 6 h with a combination of anesthetic drugs (midazolam, nitrous oxide, isoflurane) caused widespread apoptotic neurodegeneration in the ...developing brain, followed by lifelong cognitive deficits. It has also been reported that ketamine triggers neuroapoptosis in the infant rat brain if administered repeatedly over a period of 9 h. The question arises whether less extreme exposure to anesthetic drugs can also trigger neuroapoptosis in the developing brain.
To address this question we administered ketamine, midazolam or ketamine plus midazolam subcutaneously at various doses to infant mice and evaluated the rate of neuroapoptosis in various brain regions following either saline or these various drug treatments. Each drug was administered as a single one‐time injection in a dose range that would be considered subanesthetic, and the brains were evaluated by unbiased stereology methods 5 h following drug treatment.
Neuroapoptosis was detected by immunohistochemical staining for activated caspase‐3. It was found that either ketamine or midazolam caused a dose‐dependent, statistically significant increase in the rate of neuroapoptosis, and the two drugs combined caused a greater increase than either drug alone. The apoptotic nature of the neurodegenerative reaction was confirmed by electron microscopy.
We conclude that relatively mild exposure to ketamine, midazolam or a combination of these drugs can trigger apoptotic neurodegeneration in the developing mouse brain.

A Goppa code over <inline-formula> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">\Bbb F_{q^{m}} </tex-math></inline-formula> is a well-known subclass of algebraic error-correcting code. If <inline-formula> <tex-math ...notation="LaTeX">m=1 </tex-math></inline-formula>, then it is a generalized Reed-Solomon(GRS) code and its dual code is called a GRS code via a Goppa code. In this paper, we give a necessary and sufficient condition that the dual codes of GRS codes via (expurgated) Goppa codes are also GRS codes via Goppa codes. Under the above condition, we show that the hulls of GRS codes via Goppa codes are still GRS codes via Goppa codes. As an application, we characterize LCD GRS codes and self-dual GRS codes under the above condition. Some numerical examples are also presented to illustrate our main results. Moreover, we also apply our result to entanglement-assisted quantum error correcting codes (EAQECCs) and obtain two new families of MDS EAQECCs with arbitrary parameters.
Noncoding RNAs (ncRNAs) represent a large segment of the human transcriptome and have been shown to play important roles in cellular physiology and disease pathogenesis. Increasing evidence on the ...functional roles of ncRNAs in cancer progression emphasizes the potential of ncRNAs for cancer treatment. Here, we summarize the roles of ncRNAs in disease relapse and resistance to current standard chemotherapy and radiotherapy; the current research progress on ncRNAs for clinical and/or potential translational applications, including the identification of ncRNAs as therapeutic targets; therapeutic approaches for ncRNA targeting; and ncRNA delivery strategies in potential clinical translation. Several ongoing clinical trials of novel RNA-based therapeutics were also emphasized. Finally, we discussed the perspectives and obstacles to different target combinations, delivery strategies, and system designs for ncRNA application. The next approved nucleic acid drug to treat cancer patients may realistically be on the horizon.
Spherical mesoporous Fe-N-C single-atom nanozyme with excellent peroxidase-like activity and photothermal property is developed via a soft-template method. Light irradiation can not only improve the ...catalytic activity of nanozyme via the increasement of reaction temperature, but also be used to kill bacteria via photothermal treatment. The synergistic effect can effectively accelerate the wound healing in vivo.

Nanozyme has been regarded as an efficient antibiotic to kill bacteria using the reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated by Fenton-like reaction. However, its activity is still unsatisfied and requires large amount of hydrogen peroxide with side effects toward normal tissues. Herein, spherical mesoporous Fe-N-C single-atom nanozyme (SAzyme) is designed for antibacterial therapy via photothermal treatment enhanced Fenton-like catalysis process. Due to the large pore size (4.0 nm), high specific surface area (413.9 m2 g−1) and uniform diameter (100 nm), the catalytic performance of Fe-N-C SAzyme is greatly improved. The Michaelis-Menten constant (Km) is 4.84 mmol L−1, which is similar with that of horseradish peroxidase (3.7 mmol L−1). Moreover, mesoporous Fe-N-C SAzyme shows high photothermal conversion efficiency (23.3 %) owing to the carbon framework. The catalytic activity can be enhanced under light irradiation due to the elevated reaction temperature. The bacteria can also be killed via physical heat effect. Due to the synergistic effect of nanozyme catalysis and photothermal treatment, the antibacterial performance is much higher than that using single antibacterial method. This work provides an alternative for combined antibacterial treatment via photothermal treatment assisted catalytic process using spherical mesoporous single-atom nanozyme as an antibiotic.
Noncoding RNAs (ncRNAs) are a large segment of the transcriptome that do not have apparent protein-coding roles, but they have been verified to play important roles in diverse biological processes, ...including disease pathogenesis. With the development of innovative technologies, an increasing number of novel ncRNAs have been uncovered; information about their prominent tissue-specific expression patterns, various interaction networks, and subcellular locations will undoubtedly enhance our understanding of their potential functions. Here, we summarized the principles and innovative methods for identifications of novel ncRNAs that have potential functional roles in cancer biology. Moreover, this review also provides alternative ncRNA databases based on high-throughput sequencing or experimental validation, and it briefly describes the current strategy for the clinical translation of cancer-associated ncRNAs to be used in diagnosis.
N6-methyladenosine (m6A) has emerged as an abundant modification throughout the transcriptome with widespread functions in protein-coding and noncoding RNAs. It affects the fates of modified RNAs, ...including their stability, splicing, and/or translation, and thus plays important roles in posttranscriptional regulation. To date, m6A methyltransferases have been reported to execute m6A deposition on distinct RNAs by their own or forming different complexes with additional partner proteins. In this review, we summarize the function of these m6A methyltransferases or complexes in regulating the key genes and pathways of cancer biology. We also highlight the progress in the use of m6A methyltransferases in mediating therapy resistance, including chemotherapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy and radiotherapy. Understanding ...the spatial and temporal variation of drought is essentially important in drought assessment. In most previous studies, drought event is usually identified in space and time separately, ignoring the nature of the dynamic processes. In order to better understand how drought changes have taken place in China during the past half-century, we carried out a comprehensive analysis of their spatio-temporal variation based on multiple drought indices from a climatic perspective. A 3-dimensional clustering method is developed to identify drought events in China from 1961 to 2012 based on the 0.25° gridded indices of SPI3 (3months Standardized Precipitation Index), RDI3 (3months Reconnaissance Drought Index) and SPEI3 (3months Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index). Drought events are further characterized by five parameters: duration, affected area, severity, intensity, and centroid. Remotely sensed soil moisture data were used to validate the rationality of identified drought events. The results show that the two most severe drought events in the past half century which occurred in the periods 1962–1963 and 2010–2011 swept more than half of the non-arid regions in China. Large magnitude droughts were usually centered in the region from North China Plain to the downstream of Yangtze River. The western part of North China Plain, Loess Plateau, Sichuan Basin and Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau had a significant drying trend, which is mainly caused by the significant decrease of precipitation. The three drought indices have almost the same performance in the humid regions, while SPI and RDI were found to be more appropriate than SPEI in the arid regions.
A series of solid supramolecules based on acrylamide–phenylpyridium copolymers with various substituent groups (P−R: R=−CN, −CO2Et, −Me, −CF3) and cucurbit7uril (CB7) are constructed to exhibit ...tunable second‐level (from 0.9 s to 2.2 s) room‐temperature phosphorescence (RTP) in the amorphous state. Compared with other solid supramolecules P−R/CB7 (R=−CN, −CO2Et, −Me), P−CF3/CB7 displays the longest lifetime (2.2 s), which is probably attributed to the fluorophilic interaction of cucurbiturils leading to a uncommon host–guest interaction between 4‐phenylpyridium with −CF3 and CB7. Furthermore, the RTP solid supramolecular assembly (donors) can further react with organic dyes Eosin Y or SR101 (acceptors) to form ternary supramolecular systems featuring ultralong phosphorescence energy transfer (PpET) and visible delayed fluorescence (yellow for EY at 568 nm and red for SR101 at 620 nm). Significantly, the ultralong multicolor PpET supramolecular assembly can be further applied in fields of anti‐counterfeiting and information encryption and painting.

Plant laccase (LAC) enzymes belong to the blue copper oxidase family and polymerize monolignols into lignin. Recent studies have established the involvement of microRNAs in this process; however, ...physiological functions and regulation of plant laccases remain poorly understood. Here, we show that a laccase gene, LAC4, regulated by a microRNA, miR397b, controls both lignin biosynthesis and seed yield in Arabidopsis. In transgenic plants, overexpression of miR397b (OXmiR397b) reduced lignin deposition. The secondary wall thickness of vessels and the fibres was reduced in the OXmiR397b line, and both syringyl and guaiacyl subunits are decreased, leading to weakening of vascular tissues. In contrast, overexpression of miR397b‐resistant laccase mRNA results in an opposite phenotype. Plants overexpressing miR397b develop more than two inflorescence shoots and have an increased silique number and silique length, resulting in higher seed numbers. In addition, enlarged seeds and more seeds are formed in these miR397b overexpression plants. The study suggests that miR397‐mediated development via regulating laccase genes might be a common mechanism in flowering plants and that the modulation of laccase by miR397 may be potential for engineering plant biomass production with less lignin.
