For the explosion mechanism of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia), different scenarios have been suggested. In these, the propagation of the burning front through the exploding white dwarf (WD) star ...proceeds in different modes, and consequently imprints of the explosion model on the nucleosynthetic yields can be expected. The nucleosynthetic characteristics of various explosion mechanisms are explored based on three two-dimensional explosion simulations representing extreme cases: a pure turbulent deflagration, a delayed detonation following an approximately spherical ignition of the initial deflagration, and a delayed detonation arising from a highly asymmetric deflagration ignition. Apart from this initial condition, the deflagration stage is treated in a parameter-free approach. The detonation is initiated when the turbulent burning enters the distributed burning regime. This occurs at densities around 10{sup 7} g cm{sup -3}-relatively low as compared to existing nucleosynthesis studies for one-dimensional spherically symmetric models. The burning in these multidimensional models is different from that in one-dimensional simulations as the detonation wave propagates both into unburned material in the high-density region near the center of a WD and into the low-density region near the surface. Thus, the resulting yield is a mixture of different explosive burning products, from carbon-burning products at low densities to complete silicon-burning products at the highest densities, as well as electron-capture products synthesized at the deflagration stage. Detailed calculations of the nucleosynthesis in all three models are presented. In contrast to the deflagration model, the delayed detonations produce a characteristic layered structure and the yields largely satisfy constraints from Galactic chemical evolution. In the asymmetric delayed detonation model, the region filled with electron capture species (e.g., {sup 58}Ni, {sup 54}Fe) is within a shell, showing a large off-set, above the bulk of {sup 56}Ni distribution, while species produced by the detonation are distributed more spherically.
Type Ia supernovae result when carbon-oxygen white dwarfs in binary systems accrete mass from companion stars, reach a critical mass and explode. The near uniformity of their light curves makes these ...supernovae good ‘standard candles’ for measuring cosmic expansion, but a correction must be applied to account for the fact that the brighter ones have broader light curves. One-dimensional modelling, with a certain choice of parameters, can reproduce this general trend in the width–luminosity relation; but the processes of ignition and detonation have recently been shown to be intrinsically asymmetric, so parameterization must have its limits. Here we report multi-dimensional modelling of the explosion physics and radiative transfer, which reveals that the breaking of spherical symmetry is a critical factor in determining both the width–luminosity relation and the observed scatter about it. The deviation from spherical symmetry can also explain the finite polarization detected in the light from some supernovae. The slope and normalization of the width–luminosity relation has a weak dependence on certain properties of the white dwarf progenitor, in particular the trace abundances of elements other than carbon and oxygen. Failing to correct for this effect could lead to systematic overestimates of up to 2 per cent in the distance to remote supernovae.

Ch) by accretion and give rise to a thermonuclear explosion. Here, we investigate an off-centre deflagration in a near-M
Ch hybrid WD under the assumption that nuclear burning only occurs in carbon-rich material. Performing hydrodynamics simulations of the explosion and detailed nucleosynthesis post-processing calculations, we find that only 0.014 M⊙ of material is ejected while the remainder of the mass stays bound. The ejecta consist predominantly of iron-group elements, O, C, Si and S. We also calculate synthetic observables for our model and find reasonable agreement with the faint Type Iax SN 2008ha. This shows for the first time that deflagrations in near-M
Ch WDs can in principle explain the observed diversity of Type Iax supernovae. Leaving behind a near-M
Ch bound remnant opens the possibility for recurrent explosions or a subsequent accretion-induced collapse in faint Type Iax SNe, if further accretion episodes occur. From binary population synthesis calculations, we find the rate of hybrid WDs approaching M
Ch to be of the order of 1 per cent of the Galactic
SN Ia rate.
2002cx-like supernovae are a sub-class of sub-luminous Type Ia supernovae (SNe). Their light curves and spectra are characterized by distinct features that indicate strong mixing of the explosion ...ejecta. Pure turbulent deflagrations have been shown to produce such mixed ejecta. Here, we present hydrodynamics, nucleosynthesis and radiative-transfer calculations for a 3D full-star deflagration of a Chandrasekhar-mass white dwarf. Our model is able to reproduce the characteristic observational features of SN 2005hk (a prototypical 2002cx-like supernova), not only in the optical, but also in the near-infrared. For that purpose we present, for the first time, five near-infrared spectra of SN 2005hk from −0.2 to 26.6 d with respect to B-band maximum. Since our model burns only small parts of the initial white dwarf, it fails to completely unbind the white dwarf and leaves behind a bound remnant of ∼1.03 M - consisting mainly of unburned carbon and oxygen, but also enriched by some amount of intermediate-mass and iron-group elements from the explosion products that fall back on the remnant. We discuss possibilities for detecting this bound remnant and how it might influence the late-time observables of 2002cx-like SNe.
Calculations of synthetic spectropolarimetry are one means to test multidimensional explosion models for Type Ia supernovae. In a recent paper, we demonstrated that the violent merger of a 1.1 and ...0.9 M⊙ white dwarf binary system is too asymmetric to explain the low polarization levels commonly observed in normal Type Ia supernovae. Here, we present polarization simulations for two alternative scenarios: the sub-Chandrasekhar mass double-detonation and the Chandrasekhar mass delayed-detonation model. Specifically, we study a 2D double-detonation model and a 3D delayed-detonation model, and calculate polarization spectra for multiple observer orientations in both cases. We find modest polarization levels (<1 per cent) for both explosion models. Polarization in the continuum peaks at ∼0.1–0.3 per cent and decreases after maximum light, in excellent agreement with spectropolarimetric data of normal Type Ia supernovae. Higher degrees of polarization are found across individual spectral lines. In particular, the synthetic Si ii λ6355 profiles are polarized at levels that match remarkably well the values observed in normal Type Ia supernovae, while the low degrees of polarization predicted across the O i λ7774 region are consistent with the non-detection of this feature in current data. We conclude that our models can reproduce many of the characteristics of both flux and polarization spectra for well-studied Type Ia supernovae, such as SN 2001el and SN 2012fr. However, the two models considered here cannot account for the unusually high level of polarization observed in extreme cases such as SN 2004dt.
Common envelope (CE) phases in binary systems where the primary star reaches the tip of the red giant branch are discussed as a formation scenario for hot subluminous B-type (sdB) stars. For some of ...these objects, observations point to very low-mass companions. In hydrodynamical CE simulations with the moving-mesh code
AREPO
, we test whether low-mass objects can successfully unbind the envelope. The success of envelope removal in our simulations critically depends on whether or not the ionization energy released by recombination processes in the expanding material is taken into account. If this energy is thermalized locally, envelope ejection eventually leading to the formation of an sdB star is possible with companion masses down to the brown dwarf range. For even lower companion masses approaching the regime of giant planets, however, envelope removal becomes increasingly difficult or impossible to achieve. Our results are consistent with current observational constraints on companion masses of sdB stars. Based on a semi-analytic model, we suggest a new criterion for the lowest companion mass that is capable of triggering a dynamical response of the primary star thus potentially facilitating the ejection of a CE. This gives an estimate consistent with the findings of our hydrodynamical simulations.
SN 2014J in M82 is the closest detected Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) in at least 28 yr and perhaps in 410 yr. Despite its small distance of 3.3 Mpc, SN 2014J is surprisingly faint, peaking at ...V = 10.6 mag, and assuming a typical SN Ia luminosity, we infer an observed visual extinction of A
V
= 2.0 ± 0.1 mag. But this picture, with R
V
= 1.6 ± 0.2, is too simple to account for all observations. We combine 10 epochs (spanning a month) of HST/Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) ultraviolet through near-infrared spectroscopy with HST/Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3), Katzman Automatic Imaging Telescope, and FanCam photometry from the optical to the infrared and nine epochs of high-resolution TRES (Tillinghast Reflection Echelle Spectrograph) spectroscopy to investigate the sources of extinction and reddening for SN 2014J. We argue that the wide range of observed properties for SN 2014J is caused by a combination of dust reddening, likely originating in the interstellar medium of M82, and scattering off circumstellar material. For this model, roughly half of the extinction is caused by reddening from typical dust (E(B − V) = 0.45 mag and R
V
= 2.6) and roughly half by scattering off Large Magellanic Cloud-like dust in the circumstellar environment of SN 2014J.
We analyze the nucleosynthesis yields of various Type Ia supernova explosion simulations including pure detonations in sub-Chandrasekhar mass white dwarfs; double detonations and pure helium ...detonations of sub-Chandrasekhar mass white dwarfs with an accreted helium envelope; a violent merger model of two white dwarfs; and deflagrations and delayed detonations in Chandrasekhar mass white dwarfs. We focus on the iron peak elements Mn, Zn, and Cu. To this end, we also briefly review the different burning regimes and production sites of these elements, as well as the results of abundance measurements and several galactic chemical evolution studies. We find that super-solar values of Mn/Fe are not restricted to Chandrasekhar mass explosion models. Scenarios including a helium detonation can significantly contribute to the production of Mn, in particular the models proposed for calcium-rich transients. Although Type Ia supernovae are often not accounted for as production sites of Zn and Cu, our models involving helium shell detonations can produce these elements in super-solar ratios relative to Fe. Our results suggest a re-consideration of Type Ia supernova yields in galactic chemical evolution models. A detailed comparison with observations can provide new insight into the progenitor and explosion channels of these events.
Context.
Due to the ever increasing number of observations during the past decades, Type Ia supernovae are nowadays regarded as a heterogeneous class of optical transients consisting of several ...subtypes. One of the largest of these subclasses is the class of Type Iax supernovae. They have been suggested to originate from pure deflagrations in carbon-oxygen Chandrasekhar mass white dwarfs because the outcome of this explosion scenario is in general agreement with their subluminous nature.
Aims.
Although a few deflagration studies have already been carried out, the full diversity of the class has not been captured yet. This, in particular, holds for the faint end of the subclass. We therefore present a parameter study of single-spot ignited deflagrations in Chandrasekhar mass white dwarfs varying the location of the ignition spark, the central density, the metallicity, and the composition of the white dwarf. We also explore a rigidly rotating progenitor to investigate whether the effect of rotation can spawn additional trends.
Methods.
We carried out three-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations employing the
LEAFS
code. Subsequently, detailed nucleosynthesis results were obtained with the nuclear network code
YANN
. In order to compare our results to observations, we calculated synthetic spectra and light curves with the
ARTIS
code.
Results.
The new set of models extends the range in brightness covered by previous studies to the lower end. Our single-spot ignited explosions produce
56
Ni masses from 5.8 × 10
−3
to 9.2 × 10
−2
M
⊙
. In spite of the wide exploration of the parameter space, the main characteristics of the models are primarily driven by the mass of
56
Ni and form a one-dimensional sequence. Secondary parameters seem to have too little impact to explain the observed trend in the faint part of the Type Iax supernova class. We report kick velocities of the gravitationally bound explosion remnants from 6.9 to 369.8 km s
−1
. The magnitude as well as the direction of the natal kick is found to depend on the strength of the deflagration.
Conclusions.
This work corroborates the results of previous studies of deflagrations in Chandrasekhar mass white dwarfs. The wide exploration of the parameter space in initial conditions and viewing angle effects in the radiative transfer lead to a significant spread in the synthetic observables. The trends in observational properties toward the faint end of the class are, however, not reproduced. This motivates a quantification of the systematic uncertainties in the modeling procedure and the influence of the
56
Ni-rich bound remnant to get to the bottom of these discrepancies. Moreover, while the pure deflagration scenario remains a favorable explanation for bright and intermediate luminosity Type Iax supernovae, our results suggest that other mechanisms also contribute to this class of events.
In a companion paper, Seitenzahl et al. have presented a set of three-dimensional delayed detonation models for thermonuclear explosions of near-Chandrasekhar-mass white dwarfs (WDs). Here, we ...present multidimensional radiative transfer simulations that provide synthetic light curves and spectra for those models. The model sequence explores both changes in the strength of the deflagration phase (which is controlled by the ignition configuration in our models) and the WD central density. In agreement with previous studies, we find that the strength of the deflagration significantly affects the explosion and the observables. Variations in the central density also have an influence on both brightness and colour, but overall it is a secondary parameter in our set of models. In many respects, the models yield a good match to the observed properties of normal Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia): peak brightness, rise/decline time-scales and synthetic spectra are all in reasonable agreement. There are, however, several differences. In particular, the models are systematically too red around maximum light, manifest spectral line velocities that are a little too high and yield I-band light curves that do not match observations. Although some of these discrepancies may simply relate to approximations made in the modelling, some pose real challenges to the models. If viewed as a complete sequence, our models do not reproduce the observed light-curve width-luminosity relation (WLR) of SNe Ia: all our models show rather similar B-band decline rates, irrespective of peak brightness. This suggests that simple variations in the strength of the deflagration phase in Chandrasekhar-mass deflagration-to-detonation models do not readily explain the observed diversity of normal SNe Ia. This may imply that some other parameter within the Chandrasekhar-mass paradigm is key to the WLR, or that a substantial fraction of normal SNe Ia arise from an alternative explosion scenario.
