Among the many finds discovered in the harbour of Sisak during the dredging
undertaken in the early 20th century, several pronged spears, evidently fisherman
implements, were also found. One of those ...finds, however, shows some
notable differences. The lack of barbs on the prongs and its general appearance,
strongly reminiscent of tridents’ depictions used by retiarii, could imply that
this artefact was never meant to be used to catch fishes. It would rather appear
that it was a gladiatorial weapon according to analogies depicted on Roman
mosaics, reliefs, graffiti, pottery and glass vessels.
Dealing with various aspects of archaeological research typically results in diverse and often very large datasets and, over the last few decades, primarily in a born-digital format. These data may ...be produced in many ways, but when we refer to archaeological data, we typically mean the primary data collected during various forms of archaeological fieldwork. Such data represent the primary information about fieldwork procedures and original archaeological contexts, while in the case of archaeological excavation, it serves as the sole remaining evidence of the contextual significance of archaeological features and finds. Therefore, it holds immense importance for archaeological heritage, and undoubtedly, the procedures for data archiving become the most vital prerequisite for its long-term preservation. In Croatia, the legal framework for managing cultural heritage is defined by the Act on the Protection and Preservation of Cultural Objects. Simultaneously, archaeological activities are governed by the Ordinance on Archaeological Research, which, together with the Act on Museums, also regulates the archiving of field documentation. These regulations stipulate that, in addition to archaeological finds, fieldwork documentation must be submitted to a competent public museum institution. Consequently, museums bear legal responsibility for the archaeological documentation and its archiving. While Croatian museums have established long-standing and standardising procedures for collecting data on museum objects, no standards or guidelines have ever been established for archiving datasets created during archaeological fieldwork. Given the absence of a national digital data archiving system for archaeology, this article focuses on considering the factors necessary to establish an appropriate infrastructure for digital data archiving in Croatia.
This book has come about as a result of the project 'Roman Funerary Monuments of South-Western Pannonia in their Material, Social, and Religious Context', unfolding between 2015 and 2018 in the ...Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts under the auspices of the Croatian Science Foundation, with B. Migotti as the project leader and M. Šašel Kos and I. Radman-Livaja as collaborators. 'Roman Funerary Monuments of South-Western Pannonia in their Material, Social, and Religious Context' examines around two hundred funerary monuments and fragments (stelai, sarcophagi, ash-chests, tituli, altars, medallions and buildings) from three Roman cities in the south-west part of the Roman province of Pannonia in the territory of north-west Croatia: colonia Siscia (Sisak) and municipia Andautonia (Ščitarjevo) and Aquae Balissae (Daruvar). A juxtaposition of the evidence from three administrative units of different dimensions and municipal profiles, and of unequal importance in the wider area, offered a good opportunity for a meaningful comparison of the main components for a reconstruction of material, social and cultural components of the three Romano-provincial communities. The components studied were: 1 – territorial scope of the individual cities; 2 – quantification of the monuments in terms of kinds and chronology; 3 – structural typology and iconography; 4 – social aspects of the monument use; 5 – ritual and religious aspects (incineration vs. inhumation, classical religion vs. Christianity); 6 – geo-archaeological aspect. The most valuable contributions have been achieved in the geo-archaeological field, as such research had never been carried out in the studied area before.
The results are presented of the existing archaeological investigations at the protohistorichillfort of Sveta Trojica (Holy Trinity), not far from Starigrad, and in its wider zone that also includes ...a Byzantine castrum. Although the results of sounding investigations and surveying, anda set of finds point to a long continuity of inhabitation, only further investigation will tell us more about the characteristics of the hillfort type settlement and the existence of a presumed necropolis plus the significance and role of the Byzantine castrum at the foot of the hillfort. Also highlighted is a section about the presentation and communication of the local heritage with an integral approach,initiated by the Archaeological Museum in Zagreb, with the achieved and planned effects. Laser recording from the air and the making of a digital model of the karst relief is recognised as an adequate method for future investigations, with an interdisciplinary potential.

The study of the Roman army in Dalmatia is not a neglected field of research. Besides many publications dealing with military camps or military units, there are also several synthetic texts covering ...this topic in more detail but the seminal work about the Roman army garrisoned in Dalmatia is still the chapter written by J. J. Wilkes in his book Dalmatia. Roman army studies in Dalmatia have advanced significantly in the last 50 years – quite a few excavations took place since 1969, epigraphic discoveries occurred as well and dozens of relevant papers and books have been published – but most of Wilkes’s conclusions are still pertinent. This overview is thus primarily intended as an update of chapter 7 of Wilkes’s Dalmatia, with a focus on information concerning the Roman imperial army in Dalmatia acquired through research in the last five decades.
Silver spurs from an unknown site Radman-Livaja, Ivan

In the 1970s or the early 1980s an anonymous donator has gifted
a pair of spurs to Zdenko Vinski, who had been in charge of the
Mediaeval Department for decades. Unfortunately, the whereabouts
of the ...discovery and the find spot are unknown and we
may only speculate that these spurs were found somewhere
in former Yugoslavia. They are nonetheless easily identifiable
from a typological point of view, being late Roman spurs belonging
to the so-called Leuna type. This set may be dated to the 4th
century AD. One may presume that this set was found in a grave,
since Leuna-type spurs are more often than not either grave
finds or finds discovered within Roman military sites and settlements,
the latter finds usually not being full sets but single
spurs or fragments. The find context is shrouded in mystery because
the discovery did not occur under archaeological supervision
and within the legal frame of professional field research.
One may only conjecture what else could have been found in
that grave but in any case, the discoverer, or one of the discoverers,
contacted Zdenko Vinski, probably in order to get more
information about his (or their) find. The late curator must have
somehow convinced the anonymous finder to leave the spurs
in the Museum but he probably never managed to obtain more
information about the find spot and the archaeological context.
Archaeological excavations at the hillfort site of Gradina Svete Trojice, situated on the slopes of Velebit mountain, revealed abundant finds from the second half of the last millenium BC. Imported ...tableware, amphorae and various utilitarian shapes of coarse pottery are the basic categories of ceramic finds that testify, alongside metal objects such as coins or fibulae, to the trade and cultural connections with other parts of the Adriatic. Within the ceramic production, less frequently appear special shapes that do not belong to the mentioned categories of vessels for the preparation and consumption of food and beverages. On this occasion clay tools for textile production will be examined – i.e. the loom weights, spools and spindle whorls found during the trial excavations.
