The study was designed to assess the effect of several Fe amounts and sources on haematological parameters, DNA, lipid and protein oxidative damage during the course of Fe-deficiency anaemia ...recovery. Peripheral DNA damage was assessed using an alkaline comet assay. The brain, liver, erythrocyte and duodenal mucosa lipid peroxidation and protein damage were assessed in control and anaemic rats after Fe repletion with three different sources (FeSO₄, haem Fe, and FeSO₄ + haem Fe) and amounts (45, 12, and 31 mg Fe/kg diet) of Fe: F diet, H diet or C diet, respectively. After supplying the diets, the haematological parameters studied were recovered; being remarkable is the haemoglobin increase. The DNA damage was lower in rats with the H diet, as revealed by the percentage of DNA in head, tail and Olive tail moment compared in rats with the F (P < 0.001) and C (P < 0.05) diets. Lipid peroxidation was similar in all the tissues, except in the duodenal mucosa which was lower with H and C diets (P < 0.001). The animals fed with C diet showed lower oxidative protein damage in the duodenal mucosa (P < 0.001) and was also lower in the liver and erythrocytes for H and C diets (P < 0.001). No differences were found in the brain under our experimental conditions. In conclusion, Fe supplementation with low doses of haem Fe or combined forms of non-haem and haem Fe (FeSO₄ + haem) are efficient in restoring the impaired haematological parameters and prevent the evoked oxidative stress associated with Fe supplements.
Aims: Bacteremia is a common finding in chelonian. The aim of this study is to identify this bacteremia
using blood smears stained with Gram.
Methods and Material: We did Squash blood smears from ...Trachemys patients over 100 grams and
without previous treatment. The blood smears were stained with the Gram technique and examined under
the immersion objective 100x.
Results: We gathered a total of 28 samples. Only 14% of the samples were positive to Gram + cocci. The
absence of clinical signs and hematologic alterations in the samples, classifies the presences of these
bacteria as sample contamination.
Conclusions: The blood smear is a useful technique for bacteremia identification. However, the specificity
and sensibility of the test its unknown, therefore it is necessary to perform new studies which can provide
insight of its efficacy.
Taking into account that it is necessary to reach the fulfillment off the objectivity principle of evaluation and to guarantee the fairness of the grading given, this work was developed with the ...objective to prepare the main methodological and theoretical criteria to work out of exams and their grading key. There were analyzed documents; a bibliography revision was also made. There were stated some experiences, valuations and reflections about the topic. The principles that guide the assessment of learning are defined in this work. There are also stated the ideas about grading criteria and the characteristics that should have the buy, concluding that assessment should have components of the teaching – learning process and that the steps and requirements of working out of exams are given in: the selection of the objective and the contents to be assessed, establishing the relationship between the objective and content when working out of the questions and the grading key. The working out of the grading key allows to define objectively the level of knowledge of the students in each assessment activity, and there must be clearly stated in these keys: the objective of the questions their possible answer, grading criteria (norm), the score given to each answer according to the learning quality level, and the instructions to work the whole exam. The methodological work is a key factor to better the working out of assessments and their grading key.
The 5G network solutions currently standardised and deployed do not yet enable the full potential of pervasive networking and computing envisioned in 5G initial visions: network services and slices ...with different QoS profiles do not span multiple operators; security, trust and automation is limited. The evolution of 5G towards a truly production-level stage needs to heavily rely on automated end-to-end network operations, use of distributed Artificial Intelligence (AI) for cognitive network orchestration and management and minimal manual interventions (zero-touch automation). All these elements are key to implement highly pervasive network infrastructures. Moreover, Distributed Ledger Technologies (DLT) can be adopted to implement distributed security and trust through Smart Contracts among multiple non-trusted parties. In this paper, we propose an initial concept of a zero-touch security and trust architecture for ubiquitous computing and connectivity in 5G networks. Our architecture aims at cross-domain security & trust orchestration mechanisms by coupling DLTs with AI-driven operations and service lifecycle automation in multi-tenant and multi-stakeholder environments. Three representative use cases are identified through which we will validate the work which will be validated in the test facilities at 5GBarcelona and 5TONIC/Madrid.
A 3-yr-old female bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps) was presented to the Exotic Pet and Wildlife Veterinary Teaching Hospital at the National Autonomous University of Mexico with a 3-day history of ...right hindlimb swelling. Radiographs revealed lysis of the right stifle and tarsal bone. Fine-needle aspiration from the stifle revealed large numbers of macrophages and giant cells, and Ziehl-Neelsen stain revealed intracytoplasmic acid-fast bacilli-like bacteria. Standard aerobic culture was performed, with negative results. Pain management was provided with meloxicam (0.2 mg/kg PO q24h) and tramadol (11 mg/kg PO q12h); the owner declined antimicrobial therapy. Three weeks later, radiographs revealed the progression of the lytic lesions to the distal femur, proximal tibia, and tarsal bones. One month later, the patient presented for left hindlimb swelling. Follow-up radiographs revealed a total loss of the right stifle and the tibiotarsal and tarsometatarsal joints, as well as new lytic lesions at the left stifle and tibiotarsal joints. Based on the grave prognosis, the lizard was euthanized. At necropsy, granuloma-like lesions were found at the stifles and the coxofemoral, tibiotarsal, and tarsometatarsal joints. Imprints made from these lesions revealed acid-fast bacilli. No other gross lesions were identified. Microscopic review of the tissues revealed severe granulomatous osteomyelitis and myositis, as well as a severe histiocytic and heterophilic hepatitis with acid-fast intrahistiocytic bacilli. Polymerase chain reaction results confirmed these bacteria as nontuberculous mycobacteria. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first postmortem report of septic arthritis associated with Mycobacterium spp. in a bearded dragon; only two other cases have been reported, both without postmortem findings.

Scarce information is available about the recovery of anemia with different iron (Fe) sources on enzymatic antioxidant defence; therefore the current study was designed to assess its effect on ...utilization of Fe, Cu and Zn and antioxidant defence in liver, erythrocytes, duodenal mucosa and plasma. Weanling female rat were divided in two groups: a control group (n = 10) receiving a normal Fe diet with FeSO4 (45.73 mg per kg) and an anemic group (n = 20) receiving a low-Fe diet (6.92 mg per kg) for 45 days. For the next thirty days, the anemic rats were fed with a normal Fe diet or with a mixture of heme/non-heme Fe (1 mg of Fe of hydrolysed bovine blood, honey and propolis, and 20 mg FeSO4 for 27.92 mg per kg of Fe diet). The anemic group supplemented with the mixture of heme/non-heme Fe showed a positive hematological recovery and the same utilization of the minerals as the group supplemented with FeSO4 only. This group also featured a better balance of antioxidant enzymes. The recovery of anemia with the mixture of heme/non-heme could be considered an alternative therapy to palliate the Fe-deficiency and to reduce the side effects of the classical supplements.
