The International Symposium on Fungal Stress (ISFUS), always held in ...Brazil, is now in its fourth edition, as an event of recognized quality in the international community of mycological research. The event held in São José dos Campos, SP, Brazil, in September 2022, featured 33 renowned speakers from 12 countries, including: Austria, Brazil, France, Germany, Ghana, Hungary, México, Pakistan, Spain, Slovenia, USA, and UK. In addition to the scientific contribution of the event in bringing together national and international researchers and their work in a strategic area, it helps maintain and strengthen international cooperation for scientific development in Brazil.

Polymicrobial infections are one of the most common reasons for inflammation of surrounding tissues and failure of implanted biomaterials. Because microorganism adhesion is the first step for biofilm ...formation, physical–chemical modifications of biomaterials have been proposed to reduce the initial microbial attachment. Thus, the use of superhydrophobic coatings has emerged because of their anti-biofilm properties. However, these coatings on the titanium (Ti) surface have been developed mainly by dual-step surface modification techniques and have not been tested using polymicrobial biofilms. Therefore, we developed a one-step superhydrophobic coating on the Ti surface by using a low-pressure plasma technology to create a biocompatible coating that reduces polymicrobial biofilm adhesion and formation. The superhydrophobic coating on Ti was created by the glow discharge plasma using Ar, O2, and hexamethyldisiloxane gases, and after full physical, chemical, and biological characterizations, we evaluated its properties regarding oral biofilm inhibition. The newly developed coating presented an increased surface roughness and, consequently, superhydrophobicity (contact angle over 150°) and enhanced corrosion resistance (p < 0.05) of the Ti surface. Furthermore, proteomic analysis showed a unique pattern of protein adsorption on the superhydrophobic coating without drastically changing the biologic processes mediated by proteins. Additionally, superhydrophobic treatment did not present a cytotoxic effect on fibroblasts or reduction of proliferation; however, it significantly reduced (≈8-fold change) polymicrobial adhesion (bacterial and fungal) and biofilm formation in vitro. Interestingly, superhydrophobic coating shifted the microbiological profile of biofilms formed in situ in the oral cavity, reducing by up to ≈7 fold pathogens associated with the peri-implant disease. Thus, this new superhydrophobic coating developed by a one-step glow discharge plasma technique is a promising biocompatible strategy to drastically reduce microbial adhesion and biofilm formation on Ti-based biomedical implants.
Aldosterone modulates the activity of both epithelial (specifically renal) and non-epithelial cells. Binding to the mineralocorticoid receptor (MR), activates two pathways: the classical genomic and ...the rapidly activated non-genomic that is substantially modulated by the level of striatin. We hypothesized that disruption of MR’s non-genomic pathway would alter aldosterone-induced cardiovascular/renal damage. To test this hypothesis, wild type (WT) and striatin heterozygous knockout (Strn+/−) littermate male mice were fed a liberal sodium (1.6% Na+) diet and randomized to either protocol one: 3 weeks of treatment with either vehicle or aldosterone plus/minus MR antagonists, eplerenone or esaxerenone or protocol two: 2 weeks of treatment with either vehicle or L-NAME/AngII plus/minus MR antagonists, spironolactone or esaxerenone. Compared to the WT mice, basally, the Strn+/− mice had greater (~26%) estimated renal glomeruli volume and reduced non-genomic second messenger signaling (pAkt/Akt ratio) in kidney tissue. In response to active treatment, the striatin-associated-cardiovascular/renal damage was limited to volume effects induced by aldosterone infusion: significantly increased blood pressure (BP) and albuminuria. In contrast, with aldosterone or L-NAME/AngII treatment, striatin deficiency did not modify aldosterone-mediated damage: in the heart and kidney, macrophage infiltration, and increases in aldosterone-induced biomarkers of injury. All changes were near-normalized following MR blockade with spironolactone or esaxerenone, except increased BP in the L-NAME/AngII model. In conclusion, the loss of striatin amplified aldosterone-induced damage suggesting that aldosterone’s non-genomic pathway is protective but only related to effects likely mediated via epithelial, but not non-epithelial cells.

Eupenifeldin (1) is a fungal secondary metabolite possessing bis-tropolone moieties that demonstrates nanomolar cytotoxic activity against a number of cancer cell types. As a potential anticancer lead, this meroterpenoid was used to access 29 semisynthetic analogues via functionalization of the reactive hydroxy groups of the bis-tropolones. A series of ester (2–6), carbonate (7–8), sulfonate (9–16), carbamate (17–20), and ether (21–30) analogues of 1 were generated via 22 reactions. Most of these compounds were disubstituted, produced via functionalization of both of the tropolonic hydroxy moieties, although three mono-functionalized analogues (6, 8, and 24) and one tri-functionalized analogue (3) were also obtained. The cytotoxic activities of 1–30 were evaluated against human melanoma and ovarian cancer cell lines (i.e., MDA-MB-435 and OVCAR3, respectively). Ester and carbonate analogues of 1 (i.e., 2–8) maintained cytotoxicity at the nanomolar level, and the greatest improvement in aqueous solubility came from the monosuccinate analogue (6), which was acylated on the secondary hydroxy at the 11 position.
The nutritional composition of milk from donkeys of the Nordestina breed was characterised during lactation from animals raised in the Brazilian semiarid region, in a semi-confinement and fed with ...native Caatinga vegetation. The contents of lactose, total solids, melatonin, minerals, fatty acids varied during lactation, while, the concentrations of protein and lipids remained stable. Medium chain and long chain fatty acids made up more than 80% of total fatty acids in this dairy matrix. Lysozyme, β-lactoglobulin and α-lactalbumin were present, and essential amino acid content was reported. The high concentration of lactose, along with protein, amino acid and mineral profile constitutes the Nordestina donkey milk an expressive nutritional value, presenting health benefits, as well as an important ingredient in the formulation of food products.
Background
The use of ultrasound‐guided ablation procedures to treat both benign and malignant thyroid conditions is gaining increasing interest. This document has been developed as an international ...interdisciplinary evidence‐based statement with a primary focus on radiofrequency ablation and is intended to serve as a manual for best practice application of ablation technologies.
Methods
A comprehensive literature review was conducted to guide statement development and generation of best practice recommendations. Modified Delphi method was applied to assess whether statements met consensus among the entire author panel.
Results
A review of the current state of ultrasound‐guided ablation procedures for the treatment of benign and malignant thyroid conditions is presented. Eighteen best practice recommendations in topic areas of preprocedural evaluation, technique, postprocedural management, efficacy, potential complications, and implementation are provided.
Conclusions
As ultrasound‐guided ablation procedures are increasingly utilized in benign and malignant thyroid disease, evidence‐based and thoughtful application of best practices is warranted.

In this study, titanium (Ti) was modified with biofunctional and novel surface by micro-arc oxidation (MAO) and glow discharge plasma (GDP) and we tested the development of a three-species periodontopatogenic biofilm onto the treated commercially-pure titanium (cpTi) surfaces. Machined and sandblasted surfaces were used as control group. Several techniques for surface characterizations and monoculture on bone tissue cells were performed. A multispecies biofilm composed of Streptococcus sanguinis, Actinomyces naeslundii and Fusobacterium nucleatum was developed onto cpTi discs for 16.5h (early biofilm) and 64.5h (mature biofilm). The number of viable microorganisms and the composition of the extracellular matrix (proteins and carbohydrates) were determined. The biofilm organization was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). In addition, MC3T3-E1 cells were cultured on the Ti surfaces and cell proliferation (MTT) and morphology (SEM) were assessed. MAO treatment produced oxide films rich in calcium and phosphorus with a volcano appearance while GDP treatment produced silicon-based smooth thin-film. Plasma treatments were able to increase the wettability of cpTi (p<0.05). An increase of surface roughness (p<0.05) and formation of anatase and rutile structures was noted after MAO treatment. GDP had the greatest surface free energy (p<0.05) while maintaining the surface roughness compared to the machined control (p>0.05). Plasma treatment did not affect the viable microorganisms counts, but the counts of F. nucleatum was lower for MAO treatment at early biofilm phase. Biofilm extracellular matrix was similar among the groups, excepted for GDP that presented the lowest protein content. Moreover, cell proliferation was not significantly affected by the experimental, except for MAO at 6days that resulted in an increased cell proliferative. Together, these findings indicate that plasma treatments are a viable and promising technology to treat bone-integrated dental implants as the new surfaces displayed improved mechanical and biological properties with no increase in biofilm proliferation.

The incidence of stoma complications ranges from 20-70%. Pseudoverrucous Epitheliomatous Hyperplasia (PEH) is a rare complication of the peristomal skin of unknown incidence, without protocol ...treatment, and with a significant impact on the patient's quality of life. There are numerous ways to treat peristomal lesions, mostly outpatient care. We report a case of peristomal PEH in which surgical intervention was performed using the shaving technique with very satisfactory aesthetic and functional results.
IMPORTANCE: Generalized pustular psoriasis (GPP) is a chronic, orphan disease with limited epidemiological data. OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical characteristics, treatments, longitudinal disease ...course, and disease-specific health care utilization among patients with GPP across the United States. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A retrospective longitudinal case series involving 95 adults who met the European Rare and Severe Psoriasis Expert Network consensus definition for GPP and were treated at 20 US academic dermatology practices between January 1, 2007, and December 31, 2018. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES: The primary outcome is to describe the patient characteristics, associated medical comorbidities, treatment patterns complications, and GPP–specific health care utilization. RESULTS: Sixty-seven of 95 patients (70.5%) were women (mean age, 50.3 years SD, 16.1 years). In the initial encounter, 35 patients (36.8%) were hospitalized and 64 (67.4%) were treated with systemic therapies. In total, more than 20 different systemic therapies were tried. During the follow-up period, 19 patients (35.8%) reported hospitalizations at a median rate of 0.5 hospitalizations per year (IQR, 0.4-1.6). Women had a decreased risk of an emergency department or hospital encounter (odds ratio, 0.19; 95% CI, 0.04-0.83). CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: Generalized pustular psoriasis is a rare, chronic disease without standard treatment and is associated with continued health care utilization over time.
